Job 29

NEW JERUSALEM	Sacra Bibbia Garofalo
1 And Job continued his solemn discourse. He said:	1 Giobbe continuò a pronunciare il suo proverbio e disse:
2 Wil no one bring back to me the months that have gone, and the days when God was my guardian,	2 «Chi mi permetterà di tornare come nei mesi antichi, come ai giorni nei quali Dio mi proteggeva,
3 when his lamp shone over my head, and his light was my guide in the darkness?	3 quando faceva splendere la sua fiaccola sul mio capo e alla sua luce potevo camminare nelle tenebre;
4 Shal I ever see my days of harvest again when God protected my tent;	4 come ero negli anni del mio autunno, quando Dio proteggeva la mia tenda;
5 when Shaddai stil dwelt with me, and my children were around me;	5 quando Shaddai era ancora con me e mi stavano intorno i miei giovani;
6 when my feet were bathed in milk, and streams of oil poured from the rocks?	6 quando mi bagnavo i piedi nel latte e la pietra mi versava rivi d’olio?
7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square,	7 Quando mi recavo alla porta della città e sulla piazza installavo il mio seggio,
8 as soon as I appeared, the young men stepped aside, and the old men rose to their feet.	8 i giovani mi vedevano e si ritiravano; i signori si alzavano e restavano in piedi;
9 Men of note broke off their speeches, and put their hands over their mouths;	9 i capi trattenevano le parole, si mettevano la mano sulla bocca;
10 the voices of rulers were silenced, and their tongues stayed stil in their mouths.	10 la voce dei principi si velava e la loro lingua aderiva al palato.
11 On hearing me, people congratulated me, on seeing me, people deferred to me,	11 L’orecchio che mi ascoltava mi celebrava, l’occhio che mi vedeva mi rendeva testimonianza;
12 because I freed the poor in distress and the orphan who had no helper.	12 perché io ho salvato l’oppresso che supplicava, l’orfano e chi era senza aiuto.
13 The dying man's blessing rested on me and I gave the widow's heart cause to rejoice.	13 La benedizione del misero saliva verso di me E io facevo esultare il cuore della vedova.
14 Uprightness I wore as a garment, fair judgement was my cloak and my turban.	14 Mi vestii di giustizia ed essa mi vestì, la mia equità mi faceva da mantello e da tiara.
15 I was eyes for the blind, and feet for the lame.	15 Ero gli occhi per il cieco, ero i piedi per lo zoppo;
16 Who but me was father of the poor? The stranger's case had a hearing from me.	16 io ero un padre per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto.
17 I used to break the fangs of the wicked, and snatch their prey from their jaws.	17 Rompevo le mascelle al malvagio e dai denti gli strappavo la preda.
18 And I used to say, 'I shall die in honour, after days as numerous as the sand.	18 E mi dicevo: “Morirò vecchio, moltiplicherò i giorni come la sabbia;
19 My roots can reach the water, the dews of night settle on my leaves.	19 le mie radici si stendono lungo le acque, la rugiada si posa di notte sui miei rami.
20 My glory wil be for ever new and the bow in my hand for ever strong.'	20 La mia gloria sarà sempre nuova in me, il mio arco nella mia mano si rinnoverà».
21 They waited anxiously to hear me, and listened in silence to what I had to say.	21 Mi ascoltavano con grande attenzione e tutti aspettavano il mio parere.
22 When I had finished, no one contradicted, my words dropping on them, one by one.	22 Quando finivo di parlare, nessuno obiettava, su di loro i miei detti cadevano goccia a goccia;
23 They waited for me as though for rain, open-mouthed as though for a late shower.	23 mi attendevano come una pioggia e aprivano la bocca come alla pioggia tardiva.
24 If I smiled at them, it was too good to be true, they watched my face for the least sign of favour.	24 Se sorridevo loro, non osavano crederlo e non lasciavano cadere la luce della mia faccia.
25 As their chief, I told them which course to take, like a king living among his troops, and I led themwherever I chose.	25 Indicavo loro la strada e li guidavo, stavo come un re tra le sue bande o come un consolatore tra gli afflitti.
