NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy, and all slander;1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk so that through it you may grow into salvation,2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
for you have tasted that the Lord is good.3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God,4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
For it says in scripture: "Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame."6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: "The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,"7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
and "A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall." They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny.8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
But you are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises" of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Once you were "no people" but now you are God's people; you "had not received mercy" but now you have received mercy.10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and sojourners to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against the soul.11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that if they speak of you as evildoers, they may observe your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation.12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether it be to the king as supreme13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the approval of those who do good.14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
For it is the will of God that by doing good you may silence the ignorance of foolish people.15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
Be free, yet without using freedom as a pretext for evil, but as slaves of God.16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
Give honor to all, love the community, fear God, honor the king.17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse.18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
For whenever anyone bears the pain of unjust suffering because of consciousness of God, that is a grace.19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
But what credit is there if you are patient when beaten for doing wrong? But if you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God.20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly.23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
