NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
After they had subdued the land, the whole community of the Israelites assembled at Shiloh, where they set up the meeting tent.1 Congregatique sunt omnes filii Israël in Silo, ibique fixerunt tabernaculum testimonii, et fuit eis terra subjecta.
Seven tribes among the Israelites had not yet received their heritage.2 Remanserant autem filiorum Israël septem tribus, quæ necdum acceperant possessiones suas.
Joshua therefore said to the Israelites, "How much longer will you put off taking steps to possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?3 Ad quos Josue ait : Usquequo marcetis ignavia, et non intratis ad possidendam terram, quam Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum dedit vobis ?
Choose three men from each of your tribes; I will commission them to begin a survey of the land, which they shall describe for purposes of inheritance. When they return to me4 Eligite de singulis tribubus ternos viros, ut mittam eos, et pergant atque circumeant terram, et describant eam juxta numerum uniuscujusque multitudinis : referantque ad me quod descripserint.
you shall divide it into seven parts. Judah is to retain its territory in the south, and the house of Joseph its territory in the north.5 Dividite vobis terram in septem partes : Judas sit in terminis suis ab australi plaga, et domus Joseph ab aquilone.
You shall bring here to me the description of the land in seven sections. I will then cast lots for you here before the LORD, our God.6 Mediam inter hos terram in septem partes describite : et huc venietis ad me, ut coram Domino Deo vestro mittam vobis hic sortem :
For the Levites have no share among you, because the priesthood of the LORD is their heritage; while Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received the heritage east of the Jordan which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave them."7 quia non est inter vos pars Levitarum, sed sacerdotium Domini est eorum hæreditas. Gad autem et Ruben, et dimidia tribus Manasse, jam acceperant possessiones suas trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam, quas dedit eis Moyses famulus Domini.
When those who were to map out the land were ready for the journey, Joshua instructed them to survey the land, prepare a description of it, and return to him; then he would cast lots for them there before the LORD in Shiloh.8 Cumque surrexissent viri, ut pergerent ad describendam terram, præcepit eis Josue, dicens : Circuite terram, et describite eam, ac revertimini ad me : ut hic coram Domino, in Silo, mittam vobis sortem.
So they went through the land, listed its cities in writing in seven sections, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh.9 Itaque perrexerunt : et lustrantes eam, in septem partes diviserunt, scribentes in volumine. Reversique sunt ad Josue in castra Silo.
Joshua then divided up the land for the Israelites into their separate shares, casting lots for them before the LORD in Shiloh.10 Qui misit sortes coram Domino in Silo, divisitque terram filiis Israël in septem partes.
One lot fell to the clans of the tribe of Benjaminites. The territory allotted them lay between the descendants of Judah and those of Joseph.11 Et ascendit sors prima filiorum Benjamin per familias suas, ut possiderent terram inter filios Juda et filios Joseph.
Their northern boundary began at the Jordan and went over the northern flank of Jericho, up westward into the mountains, till it reached the desert of Beth-aven.12 Fuitque terminus eorum contra aquilonem a Jordane : pergens juxta latus Jericho septentrionalis plagæ, et inde contra occidentem ad montana conscendens et perveniens ad solitudinem Bethaven,
From there it crossed over to the southern flank of Luz (that is, Bethel). Then it ran down to Ataroth-addar, on the mountaintop south of Lower Beth-horon.13 atque pertransiens juxta Luzam ad meridiem, ipsa est Bethel : descenditque in Ataroth Addar, in montem qui est ad meridiem Beth-horon inferioris :
For the western border, the boundary line swung south from the mountaintop opposite Bethhoron till it reached Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), which city belonged to the Judahites. This was the western boundary.14 et inclinatur circuiens contra mare ad meridiem montis qui respicit Beth-horon contra Africum : suntque exitus ejus in Cariath-baal, quæ vocatur et Cariathiarim, urbem filiorum Juda. Hæc est plaga contra mare, ad occidentem.
The southern boundary began at the limits of Kiriath-jearim and projected to the spring at Nephtoah.15 A meridie autem ex parte Cariathiarim egreditur terminus contra mare, et pervenit usque ad fontem aquarum Nephtoa.
It went down to the edge of the mountain on the north of the Valley of Rephaim, where it faces the Valley of Ben-hinnom; and continuing down the Valley of Hinnom along the southern flank of the Jebusites, reached En-rogel.16 Descenditque in partem montis, qui respicit vallem filiorum Ennom : et est contra septentrionalem plagam in extrema parte vallis Raphaim. Descenditque in Geennom (id est, vallem Ennom) juxta latus Jebusæi ad austrum : et pervenit ad fontem Rogel,
Inclining to the north, it extended to En-shemesh, and thence to Geliloth, opposite the pass of Adummim. Then it dropped to Eben-Bohan-ben-Reuben,17 transiens ad aquilonem, et egrediens ad Ensemes, id est, fontem solis :
across the northern flank of the Arabah overlook, down into the Aarabah.18 et pertransit usque ad tumulos, qui sunt e regione ascensus Adommim : descenditque ad Abenboën, id est, lapidem Boën filii Ruben : et pertransit ex latere aquilonis ad campestria : descenditque in planitiem,
From there the boundary continued across the northern flank of Beth-hoglah and extended to the northern tip of the Salt Sea, at the southern end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.19 et prætergreditur contra aquilonem Beth Hagla : suntque exitus ejus contra linguam maris salsissimi ab aquilone in fine Jordanis ad australem plagam :
The Jordan bounded it on the east. This was how the heritage of the clans of the Benjaminites was bounded on all sides.20 qui est terminus illius ab oriente. Hæc est possessio filiorum Benjamin per terminos suos in circuitu, et familias suas.
Now the cities belonging to the clans of the tribe of the Benjaminites were: Jericho, Beth-hoglah, Emek-keziz,21 Fueruntque civitates ejus, Jericho et Beth Hagla et vallis Casis,
Beth-arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel,22 Beth Araba et Samaraim et Bethel
Avvim, Parah, Ophrah,23 et Avim et Aphara et Ophera,
Chephar-ammoni, Ophni and Geba; twelve cities and their villages.24 villa Emona et Ophni et Gabee : civitates duodecim, et villæ earum.
Also Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth,25 Gabaon et Rama et Beroth,
Mizpeh, Chephirah, Mozah,26 et Mesphe et Caphara, et Amosa
Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah,27 et Recem, Jarephel et Tharela,
Zela, Haeleph, the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah and Kiriath; fourteen cities and their villages. This was the heritage of the clans of Benjaminites.28 et Sela, Eleph, et Jebus, quæ est Jerusalem, Gabaath et Cariath : civitates quatuordecim, et villæ earum. Hæc est possessio filiorum Benjamin juxta familias suas.
