NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
"When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.1 Profectique inde venimus in solitudinem per viam maris Ru bri, sicut mihi dixerat Dominus; et circuivimus montem Seir longo tempore.
Finally the LORD said to me,2 Dixitque Dominus ad me:
'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.3 “Sufficit vobis circuire montem istum; ite contra aquilonem.
Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful4 Et populo praecipe dicens: Transibitis per terminos fratrum vestrorum filiorum Esau, qui habitant in Seir, et timebunt vos.
not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.5 Cavete ergo diligenter, ne moveamini contra eos; neque enim dabo vobis de terra eorum, quantum potest unius pedis calcare vestigium, quia in possessionem Esau dedi montem Seir.
You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.6 Cibos emetis ab eis pecunia et comedetis; etiam aquam emptam haurietis et bibetis.
The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'7 Dominus Deus tuus benedixit tibi in omni opere manuum tuarum; novit iter tuum, quomodo transieris solitudinem hanc magnam per quadraginta annos habitans tecum Dominus Deus tuus, et nihil tibi defuit”.
"Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.8 Cumque transissemus fratres nostros filios Esau, qui habitabant in Seir, per viam Arabae de Ailath et de Asiongaber, vertimus nos et venimus per iter, quod ducit in desertum Moab.
And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.9 Dixitque Dominus ad me: “Non pugnes contra Moabitas nec ineas adversus eos proelium; non enim dabo tibi quidquam de terra eorum, quia filiis Lot tradidi Ar in possessionem.
(Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;10 — Emim primi fuerunt habitatores eius, populus magnus et multus et tam excelsus ut Enacim;
like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.11 ipsi quoque Raphaim reputabantur sicut Enacim; denique Moabitae appellant eos Emim.
In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)12 In Seir autem prius habitaverunt Horim; quibus expulsis atque deletis, habitaverunt filii Esau pro eis, sicut fecit Israel in terra possessionis suae, quam dedit eis Dominus C.
Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.13 Surgite ergo et transite torrentem Zared”. Et transivimus torrentem Zared.
Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.14 Tempus autem, quo ambulavimus de Cadesbarne usque ad transitum torrentis Zared, triginta octo annorum fuit, donec consumeretur omnis generatio hominum bellatorum de castris, sicut iuraverat eis Dominus,
For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.15 cuius manus fuit adversum eos, ut interirent de castrorum medio.
"When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,16 Postquam autem universi ceciderunt pugnatores de medio populi,
the LORD said to me,17 locutus est Dominus ad me dicens:
'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.18 “Tu transibis hodie terminos Moab, urbem nomine Ar;
As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.19 et accedens in vicina filiorum Ammon, cave, ne pugnes contra eos nec movearis ad proelium; non enim dabo tibi de terra filiorum Ammon, quia filiis Lot dedi eam in possessionem.
(This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,20 — Terra Raphaim reputata est et ipsa olim habitaverunt Raphaim in ea, quos Ammonitae vocant Zomzommim,
a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.21 populus magnus et multus et procerae longitudinis sicut Enacim, quos delevit Dominus a facie eorum et fecit illos habitare pro eis,
He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.22 sicut fecerat filiis Esau, qui habitant in Seir, delens Horim et terram eorum illis tradens, quam possident usque in praesens.
So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)23 Hevaeos quoque, qui habitabant in villis usque Gazam, Caphtorim, qui egressi de Caphtor deleverunt eos et habitaverunt pro illis C.
"'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.24 Surgite! Proficiscimini et transite torrentem Arnon: ecce tradidi in manu tua Sehon regem Hesebon Amorraeum; et terram eius incipe possidere et committe adversus eum proelium.
This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'25 Hodie incipiam mittere terrorem atque formidinem tuam in populos, qui habitant sub omni caelo, ut, audito nomine tuo, paveant et contremiscant coram te”.
"So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:26 Misi ergo nuntios de solitudine Cademoth ad Sehon regem Hesebon verbis pacificis dicens:
'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.27 Transibo per terram tuam, publica gradiar via, non declinabo neque ad dexteram neque ad sinistram;
For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,28 alimenta pretio vende mihi, ut vescar, aquam pecunia tribue mihi, et sic bibam; tantum est ut mihi concedas transitum,
as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'29 sicut fecerunt mihi filii Esau, qui habitant in Seir, et Moabitae, qui morantur in Ar, donec veniam ad Iordanem et transeam in terram, quam Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis.
But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.30 Noluitque Sehon rex Hesebon dare nobis transitum, quia induraverat Dominus Deus tuus spiritum eius et obfirmaverat cor illius, ut traderetur in manus tuas, sicut est in praesenti die.
"Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'31 Dixitque Dominus ad me: “Ecce coepi tradere tibi Sehon et terram eius. Incipe possidere eam!”.
So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;32 Egressusque est Sehon obviam nobis cum omni populo suo ad proelium in Iasa,
but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.33 et tradidit eum Dominus Deus noster nobis; percussimusque eum cum filiis suis et omni populo suo.
At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.34 Cunctasque urbes eius in tempore illo cepimus et percussimus anathemate singulas civitates cum viris ac mulieribus et parvulis; neminem reliquimus in eis superstitem,
Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.35 absque iumentis, quae in partem venere praedantium, et spoliis urbium, quas cepimus.
From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.36 Ab Aroer, quae est super ripam torrentis Arnon, et oppido, quod in valle situm est, usque Galaad non fuit civitas, quae nostras effugeret manus: omnia tradidit Dominus Deus noster nobis,
However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.37 absque terra filiorum Ammon, ad quam non accessisti, cunctis, quae adiacent torrenti Iaboc, et urbibus montanis universisque locis, a quibus nos prohibuit Dominus Deus noster.
