Sirach 11

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The poor man's wisdom lifts his head high and sets him among princes.	1 Le pauvre, s'il est sage, tient la tête haute et s'assied parmi les grands.
2 Praise not a man for his looks; despise not a man for his appearance.	2 Ne félicite pas un homme pour sa prestance et ne prend personne en grippe d'après sonapparence.
3 Least is the bee among winged things, but she reaps the choicest of all harvests.	3 L'abeille est petite parmi les êtres ailés, mais ce qu'elle produit est d'une douceur exquise.
4 Mock not the worn cloak and jibe at no man's bitter day: For strange are the works of the LORD, hidden from men his deeds.	4 Ne t'enorgueillis pas lorsqu'on t'honore: car les oeuvres du Seigneur sont admirables, maiselles sont cachées aux hommes.
5 The oppressed often rise to a throne, and some that none would consider wear a crown.	5 Souvent des souverains ont été assis sur le pavé et un inconnu a reçu le diadème.
6 The exalted often fall into utter disgrace; the honored are given into enemy hands.	6 Souvent des puissants ont été durement humiliés et des hommes illustres sont tombés aupouvoir d'autrui.
7 Before investigating, find no fault; examine first, then criticize.	7 Ne blâme pas avant d'avoir examiné, réfléchis d'abord, puis exprime tes reproches.
8 Before hearing, answer not, and interrupt no one in the middle of his speech.	8 Ne réponds pas avant d'avoir écouté, n'interviens pas au milieu du discours.
9 Dispute not about what is not your concern; in the strife of the arrogant take no part.	9 Ne t'échauffe pas pour une affaire qui ne te regarde pas et ne te mêle pas des querelles despécheurs.
10 My son, why increase your cares, since he who is avid for wealth will not be blameless? Even if you run after it, you will never overtake it; however you seek it, you will not find it.	10 Mon fils n'entreprends pas beaucoup d'affaires; si tu les multiplies, tu ne t'en tireras pasindemne; même en courant, tu n'arriveras pas et tu ne pourras échapper par la fuite.
11 One may toil and struggle and drive, and fall short all the more.	11 Il en est qui peinent, se fatiguent et se hâtent pour n'en être que mieux distancés.
12 Another goes his way a weakling and a failure, with little strength and great misery-- Yet the eyes of the LORD look favorably upon him; he raises him free of the vile dust,	12 Il y a des faibles qui réclament de l'aide, pauvres de biens et riches de dénuement; leSeigneur les regarde avec faveur, il les relève de leur misère.
13 Lifts up his head and exalts him to the amazement of the many.	13 Il leur fait relever la tête et beaucoup s'en étonnent.
14 Good and evil, life and death, poverty and riches, are from the LORD.	14 Bien et mal, vie et mort, pauvreté et richesse, tout vient du Seigneur.
15 Wisdom and understanding and knowledge of affairs, love and virtuous paths are from the LORD.
16 Error and darkness were formed with sinners from their birth, and evil grows old with evildoers.
17 The LORD'S gift remains with the just; his favor brings continued success.	17 Le don du Seigneur reste fidèle aux hommes pieux et sa bienveillance les conduira àjamais.
18 A man may become rich through a miser's life, and this is his allotted reward:	18 Il y a des gens qui s'enrichissent à force d'avarice, voici quelle sera leur récompense:
19 When he says: "I have found rest, now I will feast on my possessions," He does not know how long it will be till he dies and leaves them to others.	19 Le jour où ils se disent: "J'ai trouvé le repos, maintenant je peux vivre sur mes biens", ilsne savent pas combien de temps cela durera: il leur faudra laisser cela à d'autres et mourir.
20 My son, hold fast to your duty, busy yourself with it, grow old while doing your task.	20 Sois attaché à ta besogne, occupe-t'en bien et vieillis dans ton travail.
21 Admire not how sinners live, but trust in the LORD and wait for his light; For it is easy with the LORD suddenly, in an instant, to make a poor man rich.	21 N'admire pas les oeuvres du pécheur, confie-toi dans le Seigneur et tiens-toi à ta besogne.Car c'est chose facile aux yeux du Seigneur, rapidement, en un instant, d'enrichir un pauvre.
22 God's blessing is the lot of the just man, and in due time his hopes bear fruit.	22 La bénédiction du Seigneur est la récompense de l'homme pieux, en un instant Dieu faitfleurir sa bénédiction.
23 Say not: "What do I need? What further pleasure can be mine?"	23 Ne dis pas: "De quoi ai-je besoin? Désormais quel sera mon avoir?"
24 Say not: "I am independent. What harm can come to me now?"	24 Ne dis pas: "J'ai suffisamment, quelle malchance pourrait m'atteindre?"
25 The day of prosperity makes one forget adversity; the day of adversity makes one forget prosperity.	25 Au jour du bonheur on ne se souvient pas des maux et au jour du malheur on oublie lebonheur.
26 For it is easy with the LORD on the day of death to repay man according to his deeds.	26 C'est qu'il est aisé au Seigneur, au jour de la mort, de rendre à chacun selon ses actes.
27 A moment's affliction brings forgetfulness of past delights; when a man dies, his life is revealed.	27 Une heure d'épreuve fait oublier le bien-être et c'est à sa dernière heure que les oeuvresd'un homme sont dévoilées.
28 Call no man happy before his death, for by how he ends, a man is known.	28 Ne vante le bonheur de personne avant la fin, car c'est dans sa fin qu'on se fait connaître.
29 Bring not every man into your house, for many are the snares of the crafty one;	29 N'introduis pas chez toi n'importe qui, car nombreuses sont les ruses de l'intrigant.
30 Though he seem like a bird confined in a cage, yet like a spy he will pick out the weak spots.	30 Comme une perdrix captive dans sa cage, ainsi le coeur de l'orgueilleux, comme l'espion ilattend ta ruine.
31 The talebearer turns good into evil; with a spark he sets many coals afire.	31 Changeant le bien en mal, il est à l'affût, aux meilleures qualités il trouve des tares.
32 The evil man lies in wait for blood, and plots against your choicest possessions.	32 Une étincelle allume un grand brasier, le pécheur est à l'affût pour faire couler le sang.
33 Avoid a wicked man, for he breeds only evil, lest you incur a lasting stain.	33 Prends garde au méchant car il complote le mal, crains qu'il ne t'inflige une flétrissureéternelle.
34 Lodge a stranger with you, and he will subvert your course, and make a stranger of you to your own household.	34 Introduis l'étranger, il mettra le trouble chez toi et il t'aliénera ta maisonnée.
