1 they who said among themselves, thinking not aright: "Brief and troublous is our lifetime; neither is there any remedy for man's dying, nor is anyone known to have come back from the nether world.	1 Dizem, com efeito, nos seus falsos raciocínios: Curta é a nossa vida, e cheia de tristezas; para a morte não há remédio algum; não há notícia de ninguém que tenha voltado da região dos mortos.
2 For haphazard were we born, and hereafter we shall be as though we had not been; Because the breath in our nostrils is a smoke and reason is a spark at the beating of our hearts,	2 Um belo dia nascemos e, depois disso, seremos como se jamais tivéssemos sido! É fumaça a respiração de nossos narizes, e nosso pensamento, uma centelha que salta do bater de nosso coração!
3 And when this is quenched, our body will be ashes and our spirit will be poured abroad like unresisting air.	3 Extinta ela, nosso corpo se tornará pó, e o nosso espírito se dissipará como um vapor inconsistente!
4 Even our name will be forgotten in time, and no one will recall our deeds. So our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and will be dispersed like a mist pursued by the sun's rays and overpowered by its heat.	4 Com o tempo nosso nome cairá no esquecimento, e ninguém se lembrará de nossas obras. Nossa vida passará como os traços de uma nuvem, desvanecer-se-á como uma névoa que os raios do sol expulsam, e que seu calor dissipa.
5 For our lifetime is the passing of a shadow; and our dying cannot be deferred because it is fixed with a seal; and no one returns.	5 A passagem de uma sombra: eis a nossa vida, e nenhum reinício é possível uma vez chegado o fim, porque o selo lhe é aposto e ninguém volta.
6 Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that are real, and use the freshness of creation avidly.	6 Vinde, portanto! Aproveitemo-nos das boas coisas que existem! Vivamente gozemos das criaturas durante nossa juventude!
7 Let us have our fill of costly wine and perfumes, and let no springtime blossom pass us by;	7 Inebriemo-nos de vinhos preciosos e de perfumes, e não deixemos passar a flor da primavera!
8 let us crown ourselves with rosebuds ere they wither.	8 Coroemo-nos de botões de rosas antes que eles murchem!
9 Let no meadow be free from our wantonness; everywhere let us leave tokens of our rejoicing, for this our portion is, and this our lot.	9 Ninguém de nós falte à nossa orgia; em toda parte deixemos sinais de nossa alegria, porque esta é a nossa parte, esta a nossa sorte!
10 Let us oppress the needy just man; let us neither spare the widow nor revere the old man for his hair grown white with time.	10 Tiranizemos o justo na sua pobreza, não poupemos a viúva, e não tenhamos consideração com os cabelos brancos do ancião!
11 But let our strength be our norm of justice; for weakness proves itself useless.	11 Que a nossa força seja o critério do direito, porque o fraco, em verdade, não serve para nada.
12 Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training.	12 Cerquemos o justo, porque ele nos incomoda; é contrário às nossas ações; ele nos censura por violar a lei e nos acusa de contrariar a nossa educação.
13 He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD.	13 Ele se gaba de conhecer a Deus, e se chama a si mesmo filho do Senhor!
14 To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us,	14 Sua existência é uma censura às nossas idéias; basta sua vista para nos importunar.
15 Because his life is not like other men's, and different are his ways.	15 Sua vida, com efeito, não se parece com as outras, e os seus caminhos são muito diferentes.
16 He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father.	16 Ele nos tem por uma moeda de mau quilate, e afasta-se de nosso caminhos como de manchas. Julga feliz a morte do justo, e gloria-se de ter Deus por pai.
17 Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him.	17 Vejamos, pois, se suas palavras são verdadeiras, e experimentemos o que acontecerá quando da sua morte, 18. porque, se o justo é filho de Deus, Deus o defenderá, e o tirará das mãos dos seus adversários.
18 For if the just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes.
19 With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience.	19 Provemo-lo por ultrajes e torturas, a fim de conhecer a sua doçura e estarmos cientes de sua paciência.
20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him."	20 Condenemo-lo a uma morte infame. Porque, conforme ele, Deus deve intervir.
21 These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them,	21 Eis o o que pensam, mas enganam-se, sua malícia os cega:
22 And they knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls' reward.	22 eles desconhecem os segredos de Deus, não esperam que a santidade seja recompensada, e não acreditam na glorificação das almas puras.
23 For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him.	23 Ora, Deus criou o homem para a imortalidade, e o fez à imagem de sua própria natureza.
24 But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it.	24 É por inveja do demônio que a morte entrou no mundo, e os que pertencem ao demônio prová-la-ão.
