Proverbs 25

1 These also are proverbs of Solomon. The men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transmitted them.	1 Anche questi sono proverbi di Salomone, raccolti dagli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda.
2 God has glory in what he conceals, kings have glory in what they fathom.	2 È gloria di Dio nascondere le cose, è gloria dei re investigarle.
3 As the heavens in height, and the earth in depth, the heart of kings is unfathomable.	3 I cieli per la loro altezza, la terra per la sua profondità e il cuore dei re sono inesplorabili.
4 Remove the dross from silver, and it comes forth perfectly purified;	4 Togli le scorie dall’argento e l’orafo ne farà un bel vaso;
5 Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne is made firm through righteousness.	5 togli il malvagio dalla presenza del re e il suo trono si stabilirà sulla giustizia.
6 Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;	6 Non darti arie davanti al re e non metterti al posto dei grandi,
7 For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.	7 perché è meglio sentirsi dire: «Sali quassù», piuttosto che essere umiliato davanti a uno più importante. Ciò che i tuoi occhi hanno visto,
8 What your eyes have seen bring not forth hastily against an opponent; For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?	8 non esibirlo troppo in fretta in un processo; altrimenti che farai alla fine, quando il tuo prossimo ti svergognerà?
9 Discuss your case with your neighbor, but another man's secret do not disclose;	9 La tua causa discutila con il tuo vicino, ma non rivelare il segreto altrui,
10 Lest, hearing it, he reproach you, and your ill repute cease not.	10 perché chi ti ascolta non ti biasimi e il tuo discredito sarebbe irreparabile.
11 Like golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time.	11 Come mele d’oro su vassoio d’argento cesellato, è una parola detta a suo tempo.
12 Like a golden earring, or a necklace of fine gold, is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.	12 Come anello d’oro e collana preziosa è un saggio che ammonisce un orecchio attento.
13 Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest is a faithful messenger for the one who sends him. (He refreshes the soul of his master.)	13 Come il fresco di neve al tempo della mietitura è un messaggero fedele per chi lo manda: egli rinfranca l’animo del suo signore.
14 Like clouds and wind when no rain follows is the man who boastfully promises what he never gives.	14 Nuvole e vento, ma senza pioggia, tale è l’uomo che si vanta di regali che non fa.
15 By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.	15 Con la pazienza il giudice si lascia persuadere, una lingua dolce spezza le ossa.
16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.	16 Se hai trovato il miele, mangiane quanto ti basta, per non esserne nauseato e poi vomitarlo.
17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have more than enough of you, and hate you.	17 Metti di rado il piede in casa del tuo vicino, perché, stanco di te, non ti prenda in odio.
18 Like a club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow, is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.	18 Mazza, spada e freccia acuta è colui che depone il falso contro il suo prossimo.
19 Like an infected tooth or an unsteady foot is (dependence on) a faithless man in time of trouble.	19 Quale dente cariato e quale piede slogato, tale è l’appoggio del perfido nel giorno della sventura.
20 Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart.	20 Come chi toglie il mantello in un giorno di freddo e come chi versa aceto su una piaga viva, tale è colui che canta canzoni a un cuore afflitto.
21 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink;	21 Se il tuo nemico ha fame, dagli pane da mangiare, se ha sete, dagli acqua da bere,
22 For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.	22 perché così ammasserai carboni ardenti sul suo capo e il Signore ti ricompenserà.
23 The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.	23 La tramontana porta la pioggia, la lingua maldicente provoca lo sdegno sul volto.
24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than in a roomy house with a quarrelsome woman.	24 È meglio abitare su un angolo del tetto, che avere casa in comune con una moglie litigiosa.
25 Like cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country.	25 Come acqua fresca per una gola riarsa è una buona notizia da un paese lontano.
26 Like a troubled fountain or a polluted spring is a just man who gives way before the wicked.	26 Fontana torbida e sorgente inquinata, tale è il giusto che vacilla di fronte al malvagio.
27 To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.	27 Mangiare troppo miele non è bene, né cercare onori eccessivi.
28 Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.	28 Una città smantellata, senza mura, tale è chi non sa dominare se stesso.
