1 The leaders of the people took up residence in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one man in ten to reside in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine would remain in the other cities.1 Habitaverunt autem principes populi in Jerusalem : reliqua vero plebs misit sortem, ut tollerent unam partem de decem qui habitaturi essent in Jerusalem civitate sancta, novem vero partes in civitatibus.
2 The people applauded all those men who willingly agreed to take up residence in Jerusalem.2 Benedixit autem populus omnibus viris qui se sponte obtulerant ut habitarent in Jerusalem.
3 These are the heads of the province who took up residence in Jerusalem. (In the cities of Judah dwelt lay Israelites, priests, Levites, temple slaves, and the descendants of the slaves of Solomon, each man on the property he owned in his own city.)3 Hi sunt itaque principes provinciæ qui habitaverunt in Jerusalem, et in civitatibus Juda. Habitavit autem unusquisque in possessione sua, in urbibus suis, Israël, sacerdotes, Levitæ, Nathinæi, et filii servorum Salomonis.
4 In Jerusalem dwelt both Judahites and Benjaminites. Of the Judahites: Athaiah, son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mehallalel, of the sons of Perez;4 Et in Jerusalem habitaverunt de filiis Juda, et de filiis Benjamin : de filiis Juda, Athaias filius Aziam, filii Zachariæ, filii Amariæ, filii Saphatiæ, filii Melaleel : de filiis Phares,
5 Maaseiah, son of Baruch, son of Colhozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, a son of the Shelanites.5 Maasia filius Baruch, filius Cholhoza, filius Hazia, filius Adaia, filius Jojarib, filius Zachariæ, filius Silonitis :
6 The total of the sons of Perez who dwelt in Jerusalem was four hundred and sixty-eight valiant men.6 omnes hi filii Phares, qui habitaverunt in Jerusalem, quadringenti sexaginta octo viri fortes.
7 These were the Benjaminites: Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah,7 Hi sunt autem filii Benjamin : Sellum filius Mosollam, filius Joëd, filius Phadaia, filius Colaia, filius Masia, filius Etheel, filius Isaia,
8 and his brethren, warriors, nine hundred and twenty-eight in number.8 et post eum Gebbai, Sellai, nongenti viginti octo,
9 Joel, son of Zichri, was their commander, and Judah, son of Hassenuah, was second in charge of the city.9 et Joël filius Zechri præpositus eorum, et Judas filius Senua super civitatem secundus.
10 Among the priests were: Jedaiah; Joiarib; Jachin;10 Et de sacerdotibus, Idaia filius Joarib, Jachin,
11 Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God,11 Saraia filius Helciæ, filius Mosollam, filius Sadoc, filius Meraioth, filius Achitob princeps domus Dei,
12 and their brethren who carried out the temple service, eight hundred and twenty-two; Adaiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah,12 et fratres eorum facientes opera templi : octingenti viginti duo. Et Adaia filius Jeroham, filius Phelelia, filius Amsi, filius Zachariæ, filius Pheshur, filius Melchiæ,
13 and his brethren, family heads, two hundred and forty-two; and Amasai, son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer,13 et fratres ejus principes patrum : ducenti quadraginta duo. Et Amassai filius Azreel, filius Ahazi, filius Mosollamoth, filius Emmer,
14 and his brethren, warriors, one hundred and twenty-eight. Their commander was Zabdiel, son of Haggadol.14 et fratres eorum potentes nimis : centum viginti octo, et præpositus eorum Zabdiel filius potentium.
15 Among the Levites were Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni;15 Et de Levitis, Semeia filius Hasub, filius Azaricam, filius Hasabia, filius Boni,
16 Shabbethai and Jozabad, levitical chiefs who were placed over the external affairs of the house of God;16 et Sabathai et Jozabed, super omnia opera quæ erant forinsecus in domo Dei, a principibus Levitarum.
17 Mattaniah, son of Micah, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, director of the psalms, who led the thanksgiving at prayer; Bakbukiah, second in rank among his brethren; and Abda, son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.17 Et Mathania filius Micha, filius Zebedei, filius Asaph, princeps ad laudandum et ad confitendum in oratione, et Becbecia secundus de fratribus ejus, et Abda filius Samua, filius Galal, filius Idithun :
18 The total of the Levites in the holy city was two hundred and eighty-four.18 omnes Levitæ in civitate sancta ducenti octoginta quatuor.
19 The gatekeepers were Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren, who kept watch over the gates; one hundred and seventy-two in number.19 Et janitores, Accub, Telmon, et fratres eorum, qui custodiebant ostia : centum septuaginta duo.
20 The rest of Israel, including priests and Levites, were in all the other cities of Judah, each man in his inheritance.20 Et reliqui ex Israël sacerdotes et Levitæ in universis civitatibus Juda, unusquisque in possessione sua.
21 The temple slaves lived on Ophel. Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple slaves.21 Et Nathinæi, qui habitabant in Ophel, et Siaha, et Gaspha de Nathinæis.
22 The prefect of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi, son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micah; he was one of the sons of Asaph, the singers appointed to the service of the house of God--22 Et episcopus Levitarum in Jerusalem, Azzi filius Bani, filius Hasabiæ, filius Mathaniæ, filius Michæ. De filiis Asaph, cantores in ministerio domus Dei.
23 for they had been appointed by royal decree, and there was a fixed schedule for the singers assigning them their daily duties.23 Præceptum quippe regis super eos erat, et ordo in cantoribus per dies singulos,
24 Pethahiah, son of Meshezabel, a descendant of Zerah, son of Judah, was royal deputy in all affairs that concerned the people.24 et Phathahia filius Mesezebel, de filiis Zara filii Juda in manu regis, juxta omne verbum populi,
25 As concerns their villages in the country: Judahites lived in Kiriath-arba and its dependencies, in Dibon and its dependencies, in Jekabzeel and its villages,25 et in domibus per omnes regiones eorum. De filiis Juda habitaverunt in Cariatharbe et in filiabus ejus : et in Dibon, et in filiabus ejus : et in Cabseel, et in viculis ejus :
26 in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth-pelet,26 et in Jesue, et in Molada, et in Bethphaleth,
27 in Hazarshual, in Beer-sheba and its dependencies,27 et in Hasersual, et in Bersabee, et in filiabus ejus,
28 in Ziklag, in Meconah and its dependencies,28 et in Siceleg, et in Mochona, et in filiabus ejus,
29 in En-rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth,29 et in Remmon, et in Saraa, et in Jerimuth,
30 Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its countryside, Azekah and its dependencies. They were settled from Beer-sheba to Ge-hinnom.30 Zanoa, Odollam, et in villis earum, Lachis et regionibus ejus, et Azeca, et filiabus ejus. Et manserunt in Bersabee usque ad vallem Ennom.
31 Benjaminites were in Geba, Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its dependencies,31 Filii autem Benjamin, a Geba, Mechmas, et Hai, et Bethel, et filiabus ejus
32 Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,32 Anathoth, Nob, Anania,
33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim,33 Asor, Rama, Gethaim,
34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,34 Hadid, Seboim, et Neballat, Lod,
35 Lod, Ono, and the Valley of the Artisans.35 et Ono valle artificum.
36 Some sections of the Levites from Judah settled in Benjamin.36 Et de Levitis portiones Judæ et Benjamin.
