1 Afterward Nahash, king of the Ammonites, died and his son succeeded him as king.	1 In seguito Nakhash, re dei figli di Ammon, morì e suo figlio divenne re al suo posto.
2 David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun, the son of Nahash, for his father treated me with kindness." Therefore he sent envoys to him to comfort him over the death of his father. But when David's servants had entered the land of the Ammonites to comfort Hanun,	2 David pensò: «Voglio usare benevolenza verso Khanun, figlio di Nakhash; suo padre infatti usò benevolenza con me». Gli inviò pertanto messaggeri per consolarlo per suo padre. I servitori di David giunsero nella terra dei figli di Ammon da Khanun per consolarlo.
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun, "Do you think David is doing this--sending you these consolers--to honor your father? Have not his servants rather come to you to explore the land, spying it out for its overthrow?"	3 Ma i capi dei figli di Ammon gli dissero: «Forse David vuol onorare tuo padre ai tuoi occhi per il fatto che ti ha mandato consolatori? I suoi servitori non sono piuttosto venuti da te per esplorare, spiare e perlustrare il paese?»
4 Thereupon Hanun seized David's servants and had them shaved and their garments cut off half-way at the hips. Then he sent them away.	4 Khanun, allora, prese i servitori di David, li fece rasare e fece tagliare loro gli abiti a metà fino al pube; quindi li rimandò.
5 When David was informed of what had happened to his men, he sent messengers to meet them, for the men had been greatly disgraced. "Remain at Jericho," the king told them, "until your beards have grown again; and then you may come back here."	5 E così quelli se ne andarono. David fu informato della cosa e mandò a incontrarli, perché erano molto umiliati. Il re fece loro dire: «Rimanete a Gerico finché non vi cresca di nuovo la barba; poi ritornerete».
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had put themselves in bad odor with David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram Naharaim, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah.	6 I figli di Ammon si accorsero del disonore di cui si erano coperti presso David; perciò Khanun e i figli di Ammon spedirono diecimila talenti d’argento per assoldarsi carri e cavalieri da Aram Naharaim, da Aram-Maacha e da Zoba.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots along with the king of Maacah and his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. The Ammonites also assembled from their cities and came out for war.	7 Si assoldarono trentaduemila carri e il re di Maacha con l’esercito. Questi vennero e si accamparono innanzi a Madaba, mentre anche i figli di Ammon si raccolsero dalle rispettive città e si mossero per la battaglia.
8 When David heard of this, he sent Joab and his whole army of warriors against them.	8 David, a conoscenza del fatto, inviò Joab con tutta la schiera dei prodi.
9 The Ammonites marched out and lined up for a battle at the gate of the city, while the kings who had come to their help remained apart in the open field.	9 Allora i figli di Ammon uscirono e si disposero in battaglia all’ingresso della città; gli altri re, invece, stavano da soli, in aperta campagna.
10 When Joab saw that there was a battle line both in front of and behind him, he chose some of the best fighters among the Israelites and set them in array against the Arameans;	10 Joab, vedendo che l’attacco lo minacciava di fronte e alle spalle, fece una selezione di tutti i migliori di Israele e li dispose in battaglia di fronte agli Aramei.
11 the rest of the army, which he placed under the command of his brother Abishai, then lined up to oppose the Ammonites.	11 Affidò il resto dell’esercito al fratello Abishai. Questi si schierarono di fronte ai figli di Ammon.
12 And he said: "If the Arameans prove too strong for me, you must come to my help; and if the Ammonites prove too strong for you, I will save you.	12 Joab aveva detto: «Se gli Aramei sono più forti di me, tu mi aiuterai; se invece i figli di Ammon sono più forti di te, ti aiuterò io.
13 Hold steadfast and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; then may the LORD do what seems best to him."	13 Sii forte; noi dobbiamo combattere da prodi per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro Dio. Jahvè poi farà ciò che sembrerà bene ai suoi occhi».
14 Joab therefore advanced with his men to engage the Arameans in battle; but they fled before him.	14 Quando Joab con l’esercito mosse verso gli Aramei per la battaglia, questi si diedero alla fuga innanzi a lui.
15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also took to flight before his brother Abishai, and reentered the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 Quando i figli di Ammon videro che gli Aramei erano fuggiti, fuggirono anche loro dinanzi ad Abishai suo fratello e rientrarono in città. Allora Joab tornò a Gerusalemme.
16 Seeing themselves vanquished by Israel, the Arameans sent messengers to bring out the Arameans from the other side of the River, with Shophach, the general of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Gli Aramei constatarono di essere stati sconfitti di fronte a Israele; inviarono messaggeri e fecero uscire dai loro confini gli Aramei che erano al di là del fiume. Shofach, capo dell’esercito di Hadad-Ezer, era innanzi a loro.
17 When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together, crossed the Jordan, and met them. With the army of David drawn up to fight the Arameans, they gave battle.	17 Quando David ebbe notizia del fatto, chiamò sotto le armi tutto Israele e, passato il Giordano, arrivò ad Alema, dove si schierò contro di loro. Dopo essersi disposto in battaglia di fronte agli ram, questi combatterono contro di lui,
18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David slew seven thousand of their chariot fighters and forty thousand of their foot soldiers; he also killed Shophach, the general of the army.	18 ma dovettero fuggire di fronte a Israele mentre David uccideva degli Aramei settemila cavalieri e quarantamila fanti. Tra i morti ci fu anche Shofach, capo dell’esercito.
19 When the vassals of Hadadezer saw themselves vanquished by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans refused to come to the aid of the Ammonites.	19 Allora i servitori di Hadad-Ezer videro che erano stati battuti di fronte a Israele: fecero pace con David e si sottomisero a lui. Così gli Aramei non osa rono più soccorrere i figli di Ammon.
