1 בראשית היה הדבר והדבר היה את האלהים ואלהים היה הדבר	1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2 הוא היה בראשית אצל האלהים	2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 הכל נהיה על ידו ומבלעדיו לא נהיה כל אשר נהיה	3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
4 בו היו חיים והחיים היו אור בני האדם	4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
5 והאור בחשך זרח והחשך לא השיגו	5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
6 ויהי איש שלוח מאת האלהים ושמו יוחנן	6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
7 הוא בא לעדות להעיד על האור למען יאמינו כלם על ידו	7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
8 הוא לא היה האור כי אם להעיד על האור	8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
9 האור האמתי המאיר לכל אדם היה בא אל העולם	9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
10 בעולם היה ועל ידו נהיה העולם והעולם לא הכירו	10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
11 הוא בא אל אשר לו ואשר המה לו לא קבלהו	11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
12 והמקבלים אתו נתן עז למו להיות בנים לאלהים המאמינים בשמו	12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name
13 אשר לא מדם ולא מחפץ הבשר אף לא מחפץ גבר כי אם מאלהים נולדו	13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
14 והדבר נהיה בשר וישכן בתוכנו ונחזה תפארתו כתפארת בן יחיד לאביו רב חסד ואמת	14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.
15 ויוחנן מעיד עליו ויקרא לאמר הנה זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו הבא אחרי היה לפני כי קדם לי היה	15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
16 וממלואו לקחנו כלנו חסד על חסד	16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
17 כי התורה נתנה ביד משה והחסד והאמת באו על ידי ישוע המשיח	17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
18 את האלהים לא ראה איש מעולם הבן היחיד אשר בחיק האב הוא הודיע	18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.
19 וזאת היא עדות יוחנן בשלח היהודים מירושלים כהנים ולוים לשאל אתו מי אתה	19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'
20 ויודה ולא כחש ויודה לאמר אני אינני המשיח	20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
21 וישאלו אתו מי אפוא אתה האתה אליהו ויאמר אינני האתה הנביא ויען לא	21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
22 ויאמרו אליו מי זה אתה למען נשיב לשלחינו דבר מה תאמר עליך	22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'
23 ויאמר אני קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה כאשר דבר ישעיהו הנביא	23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'
24 והמשלחים היו מן הפרושים	24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
25 וישאלהו ויאמרו אליו מדוע אפוא מטביל אתה אם אינך המשיח או אליה או הנביא	25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'
26 ויען אתם יוחנן ויאמר אנכי מטביל במים ובתוככם עומד אשר לא ידעתם אתו	26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
27 הוא הבא אחרי אשר היה לפני ואני נקלתי מהתיר שרוך נעליו	27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
28 זאת היתה בבית עברה מעבר לירדן מקום אשר יוחנן מטביל שם	28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
29 ויהי ממחרת וירא יוחנן את ישוע בא אליו ויאמר הנה שה האלהים הנשא חטאת העולם	29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.
30 זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו אחרי יבא איש אשר היה לפני כי קדם לי היה	30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."
31 ואני לא ידעתיו כי אם בעבור יגלה בישראל באתי אני לטבל במים	31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'
32 ויעד יוחנן ויאמר חזיתי הרוח כדמות יונה ירדת משמים ותנח עליו	32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.
33 ואני לא ידעתיו אולם השלח אתי לטבל במים הוא אמר אלי את אשר תראה הרוח ירדת ונחה עליו הנה זה הוא אשר יטבל ברוח הקדש	33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."
34 ואני ראיתי ואעידה כי זה הוא בן האלהים	34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'
35 ויהי ממחרת ויסף יוחנן ויעמד ושנים מתלמידיו עמו	35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,
36 ויבט אל ישוע והוא מתהלך ויאמר הנה שה האלהים	36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'
37 ושני תלמידיו שמעו את דברו וילכו אחרי ישוע	37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38 ויפן ישוע אחריו וירא אתם הלכים אחריו ויאמר אליהם מה תבקשו ויאמרו אליו רבי פרושו מורי איפה תלין	38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'
39 ויאמר אליהם באו וראו ויבאו ויראו את מקום מלונו וישבו עמו ביום ההוא והעת כשעה העשירית	39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.
40 ואחד מן השנים אשר שמעו מאת יוחנן והלכו אחריו הוא אנדרי אחי שמעון פטרוס	40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.
41 הוא פגש בראשונה את שמעון אחיו ויאמר אליו את המשיח מצאנו אשר תרגומו כריסטוס	41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-
42 ויוליכהו אל ישוע ויהי כהביט אליו ישוע ויאמר שמעון בן יונה לך יקרא כיפא אשר תרגומו פטרוס	42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.
43 ויהי ממחרת ויואל ישוע לצאת הגלילה וימצא את פילפוס ויאמר אליו לך אחרי	43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'
44 ופילפוס היה מבית צידה עיר אנדרי ופטרוס	44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
45 ויפגע פילפוס את נתנאל ויאמר אליו מצאנו אתו אשר כתב משה בספר התורה והנביאים את ישוע בן יוסף מנצרת	45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'
46 ויאמר אליו נתנאל המנצרת תצא לנו טובה ויאמר אליו בא וראה	46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'
47 וירא ישוע את נתנאל בא לקראתו ויאמר עליו הנה באמת בן ישראל אשר אין בו רמיה	47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'
48 ויאמר אליו נתנאל מאין ידעתני ויען ישוע ויאמר לו בטרם קרא לך פילפוס בהיותך תחת התאנה אנכי ראיתיך	48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'
49 ויען נתנאל ויאמר אליו רבי אתה בן אלהים אתה הוא מלך ישראל	49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'
50 ויען ישוע ויאמר אליו על אמרי לך כי תחת התאנה ראיתיך האמנת הנה גדלות מאלה תראה	50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'
51 ויאמר אליו אמן אמן אני אמר לכם מעתה תראו השמים נפתחים ומלאכי אלהים עלים וירדים על בן אלהים	51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'
