1 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 שלח לך אנשים ויתרו את ארץ כנען אשר אני נתן לבני ישראל איש אחד איש אחד למטה אבתיו תשלחו כל נשיא בהם	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 וישלח אתם משה ממדבר פארן על פי יהוה כלם אנשים ראשי בני ישראל המה	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 ואלה שמותם למטה ראובן שמוע בן זכור	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
5 למטה שמעון שפט בן חורי	5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
6 למטה יהודה כלב בן יפנה	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
7 למטה יששכר יגאל בן יוסף	7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
8 למטה אפרים הושע בן נון	8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
9 למטה בנימן פלטי בן רפוא	9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
10 למטה זבולן גדיאל בן סודי	10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
11 למטה יוסף למטה מנשה גדי בן סוסי	11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
12 למטה דן עמיאל בן גמלי	12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
13 למטה אשר סתור בן מיכאל	13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
14 למטה נפתלי נחבי בן ופסי	14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
15 למטה גד גאואל בן מכי	15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
16 אלה שמות האנשים אשר שלח משה לתור את הארץ ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 וישלח אתם משה לתור את ארץ כנען ויאמר אלהם עלו זה בנגב ועליתם את ההר	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 וראיתם את הארץ מה הוא ואת העם הישב עליה החזק הוא הרפה המעט הוא אם רב	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 ומה הארץ אשר הוא ישב בה הטובה הוא אם רעה ומה הערים אשר הוא יושב בהנה הבמחנים אם במבצרים	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 ומה הארץ השמנה הוא אם רזה היש בה עץ אם אין והתחזקתם ולקחתם מפרי הארץ והימים ימי בכורי ענבים	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 ויעלו ויתרו את הארץ ממדבר צן עד רחב לבא חמת	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 ויעלו בנגב ויבא עד חברון ושם אחימן ששי ותלמי ילידי הענק וחברון שבע שנים נבנתה לפני צען מצרים	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 ויבאו עד נחל אשכל ויכרתו משם זמורה ואשכול ענבים אחד וישאהו במוט בשנים ומן הרמנים ומן התאנים	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 למקום ההוא קרא נחל אשכול על אדות האשכול אשר כרתו משם בני ישראל	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 וישבו מתור הארץ מקץ ארבעים יום	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 וילכו ויבאו אל משה ואל אהרן ואל כל עדת בני ישראל אל מדבר פארן קדשה וישיבו אותם דבר ואת כל העדה ויראום את פרי הארץ	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 ויספרו לו ויאמרו באנו אל הארץ אשר שלחתנו וגם זבת חלב ודבש הוא וזה פריה	27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
28 אפס כי עז העם הישב בארץ והערים בצרות גדלת מאד וגם ילדי הענק ראינו שם	28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
29 עמלק יושב בארץ הנגב והחתי והיבוסי והאמרי יושב בהר והכנעני ישב על הים ועל יד הירדן	29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
30 ויהס כלב את העם אל משה ויאמר עלה נעלה וירשנו אתה כי יכול נוכל לה	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 והאנשים אשר עלו עמו אמרו לא נוכל לעלות אל העם כי חזק הוא ממנו	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 ויוציאו דבת הארץ אשר תרו אתה אל בני ישראל לאמר הארץ אשר עברנו בה לתור אתה ארץ אכלת יושביה הוא וכל העם אשר ראינו בתוכה אנשי מדות	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 ושם ראינו את הנפילים בני ענק מן הנפלים ונהי בעינינו כחגבים וכן היינו בעיניהם	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
