1 Saul war … Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und herrschte … Jahre über Israel.	1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.
2 Er wählte sich dreitausend Mann aus Israel aus, von denen sich zweitausend bei ihm zu Michmas und im Gebirge von Bethel befanden, während tausend Mann unter Jonathan zu Gibea im Stamme Benjamin standen; das übrige Kriegsvolk hatte er entlassen, einen jeden zu seinen Zelten (= in seinen Wohnort).	2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.
3 Da zertrümmerte Jonathan die Säule (vgl. 10,5) der Philister, die in Gibea stand. Das kam zur Kenntnis der Philister; Saul aber ließ die Posaune im ganzen Lande erschallen und sagte: »Die Hebräer sollen es hören!«	3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,
4 Als nun ganz Israel die Kunde vernahm, Saul habe die Säule der Philister zertrümmert und Israel habe dadurch die Philister tödlich beleidigt, da wurde das Volk aufgeboten, dem Saul nach Gilgal zu folgen.	4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.
5 Die Philister aber sammelten sich zum Kampf mit Israel: dreitausend Kriegswagen und sechstausend Reiter und Fußvolk so zahlreich wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres; die zogen herauf und lagerten bei Michmas östlich von Beth-Awen.	5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.
6 Als nun die Mannschaft der Israeliten sah, daß sie sich in einer schlimmen Lage und in arger Bedrängnis befand, versteckten sich die Leute in den Höhlen und Dickichten (oder: Erdlöchern), in den Felsspalten, Gräbern und Zisternen;	6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.
7 manche begaben sich sogar (über die Jordanfurten) ins Land der Gaditen und nach Gilead. Saul aber befand sich immer noch in Gilgal, und das ganze Kriegsvolk folgte ihm zitternd.	7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.
8 Er wartete nun sieben Tage bis zu der von Samuel bestimmten Zeit; als Samuel aber nicht nach Gilgal kam und seine Leute ihn verließen und sich zerstreuten,	8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.
9 befahl Saul: »Bringt mir (die Tiere für) das Brandopfer und die Heilsopfer her!« Und er vollzog das Brandopfer.	9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.
10 Kaum war er aber mit der Darbringung des Brandopfers fertig, als Samuel erschien. Saul ging hinaus ihm entgegen, um ihn zu begrüßen;	10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.
11 Samuel aber fragte: »Was hast du getan?« Saul antwortete: »Weil ich sah, daß das Kriegsvolk mich verließ und sich zerstreute und du zur bestimmten Zeit nicht kamst, die Philister aber sich schon bei Michmas gesammelt haben,	11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.
12 da dachte ich: ›Jetzt werden die Philister gegen mich nach Gilgal herabziehen, ehe ich noch die Huld des HERRN für mich gewonnen habe‹; da habe ich mir denn ein Herz gefaßt und das Brandopfer dargebracht.«	12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'
13 Da sagte Samuel zu Saul: »Du hast töricht gehandelt, daß du das Gebot, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir gegeben hat, nicht beobachtet hast, sonst hätte der HERR jetzt dein Königtum über Israel für immer bestätigt;	13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.
14 nun aber wird dein Königtum keinen Bestand haben. Der HERR hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen gesucht, und der HERR hat ihn zum Fürsten über sein Volk bestellt; denn du hast nicht befolgt, was der HERR dir geboten hatte.«	14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'
15 Hierauf machte Samuel sich auf, verließ Gilgal und ging seines Weges; der Rest des Heeres aber folgte dem Saul von Gilgal nach Gibea im Stamme Benjamin; dort musterte Saul das Kriegsvolk, das sich noch bei ihm befand, etwa sechshundert Mann,	15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.
16 und verblieb mit seinem Sohne Jonathan und der ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Mannschaft zu Geba im Stamme Benjamin, während die Philister sich bei Michmas gelagert hatten.	16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.
17 Da zog die plündernde Schar aus dem Lager der Philister in drei Abteilungen aus: die eine Abteilung wandte sich in der Richtung gegen Ophra in die Landschaft Sual,	17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;
18 die zweite Abteilung zog in der Richtung gegen Beth-Horon, und die dritte Abteilung schlug die Richtung nach dem Hügel ein, der über die Hyänenschlucht emporragt, nach der Wüste hin.	18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.
19 Es war aber kein Schmied im ganzen Lande Israel zu finden; denn die Philister hatten gedacht: »Die Hebräer sollen sich keine Schwerter und Spieße anfertigen dürfen!«	19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'
20 Daher mußten alle Israeliten zu den Philistern hinabgehen, sooft jemand seine Pflugschar oder Hacke, seine Axt oder seine Sichel (oder: seinen Ochsenstecken) zu schärfen hatte	20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.
21 und sooft die Schneiden an den Pflugscharen oder an den Spaten und Hacken und Äxten stumpf geworden waren und um die Ochsenstecken gerade zu richten.	21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.
22 So kam es denn, daß beim Ausbruch des Krieges kein Schwert und kein Spieß in der Hand des ganzen Kriegsvolks, das Saul und Jonathan bei sich hatten, zu finden war; nur Saul und sein Sohn Jonathan besaßen Waffen. –	22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.
23 Ein Posten der Philister aber war nach dem Paß von Michmas vorgerückt.	23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.
