1 Darauf sagte Samuel zu ganz Israel: »Seht, ich bin in allem, was ihr mir vorgetragen habt, eurem Wunsche nachgekommen und habe einen König über euch eingesetzt.	1 Samuel addressed all Israel: "I have granted your request in every respect," he said. "I have set a king over you
2 So wird denn nunmehr der König an eurer Spitze einhergehen. Ich aber bin alt und grau geworden, so daß nun meine Söhne unter euch sind. Ich habe aber meinen Wandel von meiner Jugend an bis auf den heutigen Tag vor euren Augen geführt.	2 and now the king is your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and have sons among you. I have lived with you from my youth to the present day.
3 Hier stehe ich: tretet vor dem HERRN und seinem Gesalbten gegen mich auf! Wem habe ich seinen Ochsen, wem seinen Esel weggenommen? Wen habe ich übervorteilt, wem Gewalt angetan? Oder von wem habe ich ein Geschenk angenommen, daß ich mir dadurch die Augen hätte blenden lassen? – so will ich es euch zurückerstatten!«	3 Here I stand! Answer me in the presence of the LORD and of his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose ass have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whom have I accepted a bribe and overlooked his guilt? I will make restitution to you."
4 Da antworteten sie: »Du hast uns nicht übervorteilt und uns keine Gewalt angetan, hast auch von niemand irgend etwas angenommen.«	4 They replied, "You have neither cheated us, nor oppressed us, nor accepted anything from anyone."
5 Darauf fuhr er fort: »Der HERR ist heute mein Zeuge euch gegenüber, und ebenso ist auch sein Gesalbter Zeuge, daß ihr gar nichts (von unrechtem Gut) in meinem Besitz gefunden habt.« Sie riefen: »Ja, er ist Zeuge!«	5 So he said to them, "The LORD is witness against you this day, and his anointed as well, that you have found nothing in my possession." "He is witness," they agreed.
6 Hierauf sagte Samuel weiter zum Volke: »Ja, Zeuge ist der HERR, der Mose und Aaron geschaffen und der eure Väter aus dem Lande Ägypten hergeführt hat!	6 Continuing, Samuel said to the people: "The LORD is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt.
7 Jetzt aber tretet her, damit ich euch vor dem HERRN ins Gewissen rede und euch alle Wohltaten vorhalte, die der HERR euch und euren Vätern erwiesen hat!	7 Now, therefore, take your stand, and I shall arraign you before the LORD, and shall recount for you all the acts of mercy the LORD has done for you and your fathers.
8 Als Jakob nach Ägypten gekommen war und eure Väter zum HERRN um Hilfe schrien, da sandte der HERR Mose und Aaron, damit sie eure Väter aus Ägypten wegführten und ihnen Wohnsitze in diesem Lande gäben.	8 When Jacob and his sons went to Egypt and the Egyptians oppressed them, your fathers appealed to the LORD, who sent Moses and Aaron to bring them out of Egypt, and he gave them this place to live in.
9 Als sie (eure Väter) aber den HERRN, ihren Gott, vergaßen, ließ er sie in die Gewalt Siseras, des Heerführers (des Königs Jabin) von Hazor, fallen und in die Gewalt der Philister und in die Gewalt des Königs der Moabiter; die fingen Kriege mit ihnen an.	9 But they forgot the LORD their God; and he allowed them to fall into the clutches of Sisera, the captain of the army of Jabin, king of Hazor, into the grasp of the Philistines, and into the grip of the king of Moab, who made war against them.
10 Als sie nun zum HERRN um Hilfe schrien und bekannten: ›Wir haben gesündigt, daß wir den HERRN verlassen und den Baalen und Astarten gedient haben! Jetzt aber errette uns aus der Gewalt unserer Feinde, so wollen wir dir dienen!« –	10 Each time they appealed to the LORD and said, 'We have sinned in forsaking the LORD and worshiping Baals and Ashtaroth; but deliver us now from the power of our enemies, and we will worship you.'
11 da sandte der HERR Jerubbaal und Barak, Jephthah und Samuel und errettete euch aus der Gewalt eurer Feinde ringsum, so daß ihr in Sicherheit wohnen konntet.«	11 Accordingly, the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel; he delivered you from the power of your enemies on every side, so that you were able to live in security.
12 »Als ihr aber saht, daß Nahas, der König der Ammoniter, gegen euch heranrückte, da sagtet ihr zu mir: ›Nein, ein König soll über uns herrschen!‹, während doch der HERR, euer Gott, euer König ist.	12 Yet, when you saw Nahash, king of the Ammonites, advancing against you, you said to me, 'Not so, but a king must rule us,' even though the LORD your God is your king.
13 Nun denn – da ist der König, den ihr erwählt, den ihr verlangt habt; ja, der HERR hat nun einen König über euch eingesetzt.	13 "Now you have the king you want, a king the LORD has given you.
14 Werdet ihr nun den HERRN fürchten und ihm dienen, seinen Weisungen gehorchen und euch gegen die Befehle des HERRN nicht auflehnen, sondern ihr beide, sowohl ihr selbst als auch der König, der über euch herrscht, dem HERRN, eurem Gott, folgsam sein?	14 If you fear the LORD and worship him, if you are obedient to him and do not rebel against the LORD'S command, if both you and the king who rules you follow the LORD your God--well and good.
15 Wenn ihr aber den Weisungen des HERRN nicht gehorcht, sondern euch gegen die Befehle des HERRN auflehnt, so wird die Hand des HERRN gegen euch sein, wie sie vormals gegen eure Väter gewesen ist.	15 But if you do not obey the LORD and if you rebel against his command, the LORD will deal severely with you and your king, and destroy you.
16 Jetzt aber tretet her und achtet auf das große Ereignis, das der HERR vor euren Augen wird geschehen lassen.	16 Now then, stand ready to witness the great marvel the LORD is about to accomplish before your eyes.
17 Es ist jetzt doch die Zeit der Weizenernte; ich will aber den HERRN anrufen, er möge Donnerschläge und Regen kommen lassen; dann werdet ihr erkennen und einsehen, ein wie großes Unrecht ihr vor den Augen des HERRN begangen habt, indem ihr einen König für euch verlangtet!«	17 Are we not in the harvest time for wheat? Yet I shall call to the LORD, and he will send thunder and rain. Thus you will see and understand how greatly the LORD is displeased that you have asked for a king."
18 Als dann Samuel den HERRN anrief, ließ dieser an jenem Tage Donner und Regen (d.h. ein Gewitter) kommen, so daß das ganze Volk in große Furcht vor dem HERRN und vor Samuel geriet.	18 Samuel then called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day. As a result, all the people dreaded the LORD and Samuel.
19 Da richtete das ganze Volk die Aufforderung an Samuel: »Lege Fürbitte für deine Knechte bei dem HERRN, deinem Gott, ein, daß wir nicht zu sterben brauchen, weil wir zu allen unsern Sünden auch noch das Unrecht hinzugefügt haben, einen König für uns zu verlangen!«	19 They said to Samuel, "Pray to the LORD your God for us, your servants, that we may not die for having added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king."
20 Samuel aber erwiderte dem Volke: »Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr habt zwar all dieses Unrecht begangen; aber weicht nur nicht vom Gehorsam gegen den HERRN ab, sondern dient dem HERRN mit eurem ganzen Herzen	20 "Do not fear," Samuel answered them. "It is true you have committed all this evil; still, you must not turn from the LORD, but must worship him with your whole heart.
21 und fallt nicht von ihm ab, daß ihr den Götzen nachgeht, die nicht helfen und nicht erretten können, weil sie ja nichts sind.	21 Do not turn to meaningless idols which can neither profit nor save; they are nothing.
22 Der HERR dagegen wird um seines großen Namens willen sein Volk nicht verstoßen, weil es dem HERRN gefallen hat, euch zu seinem Volke zu machen.	22 For the sake of his own great name the LORD will not abandon his people, since the LORD himself chose to make you his people.
23 Auch von mir sei es fern, mich am HERRN zu versündigen, daß ich davon ablassen sollte, Fürbitte für euch einzulegen! Nein, ich will euch den guten und rechten Weg lehren.	23 As for me, far be it from me to sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you and to teach you the good and right way.
24 Nur fürchtet den HERRN und dient ihm aufrichtig mit eurem ganzen Herzen; denn beachtet wohl, was er Großes an euch getan hat!	24 But you must fear the LORD and worship him faithfully with your whole heart; keep in mind the great things he has done among you.
25 Wenn ihr aber dennoch böse handelt, so werdet ihr samt eurem König hinweggerafft werden (= verloren sein).«	25 If instead you continue to do evil, both you and your king shall perish."
