1 Geliebte, schenkt nicht jedem Geiste Glauben, sondern prüfet die Geister, ob sie aus Gott sind; denn viele falsche Propheten sind in die Welt ausgezogen.	1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Daran könnt ihr den Geist Gottes erkennen: Jeder Geist, der da bekennt, daß Jesus der im Fleisch gekommene Christus (oder: Messias) ist, der ist aus Gott;	2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
3 und jeder Geist, der Jesus nicht so bekennt, ist nicht aus Gott; das ist vielmehr der Geist des Widerchrists (2,18), von dessen Kommen ihr gehört habt und der jetzt schon in der Welt ist.	3 and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, of which you heard that it was coming, and now it is in the world already.
4 Ihr seid aus Gott, Kindlein, und habt sie (d.h. die falschen Propheten) überwunden, weil der, welcher in euch (wirksam) ist, stärker ist als der in der Welt (d.h. der Fürst dieser Welt).	4 Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
5 Sie stammen aus der Welt; deshalb reden sie aus der Welt heraus (d.h. nach der Denkart der Welt), und die Welt hört auf sie.	5 They are of the world, therefore what they say is of the world, and the world listens to them.
6 Wir aber sind aus Gott; wer Gott (er)kennt, der hört auf uns; wer nicht aus Gott ist, hört nicht auf uns. Daran erkennen wir den Geist der Wahrheit und den Geist der Täuschung (oder: des Truges).	6 We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and he who is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
7 Geliebte, laßt uns (oder: wir wollen) einander lieben! Denn die Liebe stammt aus Gott, und jeder, der liebt, ist aus Gott erzeugt (oder: geboren) und erkennt Gott.	7 Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God.
8 Wer nicht liebt, hat Gott nicht erkannt; denn Gott ist Liebe.	8 He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.
9 Darin ist die Liebe Gottes an uns offenbar geworden, daß Gott seinen eingeborenen (= einzigen) Sohn in die Welt gesandt hat, damit wir durch ihn leben (oder: das Leben empfangen).	9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
10 Darin besteht die Liebe: nicht daß wir Gott geliebt haben, sondern daß er uns geliebt und seinen Sohn zur Sühnung (= als Sühnopfer; vgl. 2,2) für unsere Sünden gesandt hat.	10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins.
11 Geliebte, wenn Gott uns so sehr geliebt hat, so sind auch wir verpflichtet, einander zu lieben.	11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 Niemand hat Gott jemals (mit Augen) gesehen; doch wenn wir einander lieben, so bleibt (oder: wohnt) Gott dauernd in uns, und seine Liebe ist in uns zur Vollendung gekommen.	12 No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
13 Daß wir aber in ihm bleiben und er in uns, erkennen wir daran, daß er uns (eine Spende) von seinem Geist gegeben hat (3,24).	13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his own Spirit.
14 Und wir haben (mit Augen) gesehen und bezeugen es, daß der Vater den Sohn als Retter (oder: Heiland) der Welt gesandt hat.	14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.
15 Wer nun bekennt, daß Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist, in dem wohnt Gott dauernd, und er wohnt dauernd in Gott.	15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
16 Und wir haben die Liebe, die Gott zu uns hat, erkannt und geglaubt: Gott ist Liebe, und wer in der Liebe bleibt, der bleibt in Gott, und Gott bleibt in ihm.	16 So we know and believe the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17 Darin ist die Liebe bei uns zur Vollendung gekommen, daß wir eine freudige Zuversicht am Tage des Gerichts haben; denn wie er (d.h. Jesus) ist, so sind auch wir in dieser Welt.	17 In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world.
18 Furcht ist nicht in der Liebe, sondern die vollkommene Liebe treibt die Furcht aus, weil die Furcht es mit Strafe zu tun hat; wer also Furcht empfindet, der ist in der Liebe noch nicht zur Vollendung gelangt.	18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.
19 Wir dagegen lieben, weil er (d.h. Gott) uns zuerst geliebt hat.	19 We love, because he first loved us.
20 Wenn jemand behauptet: »Ich liebe Gott« und doch seinen Bruder haßt, so ist er ein Lügner; denn wer seinen Bruder nicht liebt, der sichtbar bei ihm ist, kann ganz gewiß Gott nicht lieben, den er nicht gesehen hat.	20 If any one says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 Und dies Gebot haben wir von ihm, daß, wer Gott liebt, auch seinen Bruder liebe (= lieben soll; vgl. Joh 13,34).	21 And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should love his brother also.
