1 Als aber die Israeliten sich in Sittim niedergelassen hatten, fing das Volk an, mit den Moabitinnen Unzucht zu treiben.	1 While Israel dwelt in Shittim the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.
2 Diese luden das Volk zu den Opferfesten ihrer Götter ein, und das Volk nahm an ihren Opfermahlen teil und betete ihre Götter an.	2 These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
3 Als nun die Israeliten sich so an Baal-Peor gehängt hatten, entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN gegen Israel,	3 So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel;
4 so daß der HERR dem Mose gebot: »Nimm alle Häupter des Volkes und hänge sie angesichts der Sonne auf, damit der lodernde Zorn des HERRN sich von Israel abwende.«	4 and the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel."
5 Da befahl Mose den Richtern (oder: Oberen) der Israeliten: »Tötet ein jeder diejenigen von seinen Leuten, die sich an Baal-Peor gehängt haben!«	5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Every one of you slay his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor."
6 Da kam gerade einer von den Israeliten (ins Lager) und brachte eine Midianitin zu seinen Volksgenossen mit vor den Augen Moses und vor den Augen der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten, während diese am Eingang des Offenbarungszeltes wehklagten.	6 And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.
7 Als Pinehas, der Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, des Sohnes Aarons, das sah, trat er aus der Mitte der Gemeinde heraus, nahm einen Speer in seine Hand,	7 When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation, and took a spear in his hand
8 ging dann dem Israeliten in das Schlafgemach nach und durchbohrte beide, den israelitischen Mann und das Weib, und zwar letzteres durch ihren Unterleib. Da wurde dem Sterben unter den Israeliten Einhalt getan.	8 and went after the man of Israel into the inner room, and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through her body. Thus the plague was stayed from the people of Israel.
9 Es belief sich aber die Zahl derer, die durch das Sterben umgekommen waren, auf 24000.	9 Nevertheless those that died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
10 Hierauf sagte der HERR zu Mose:	10 And the LORD said to Moses,
11 »Pinehas, der Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, des Sohnes Aarons, hat meinen Zorn von den Israeliten dadurch abgewandt, daß er denselben Eifer, der mir eigen ist, unter ihnen bewiesen hat; darum habe ich die Israeliten trotz meines Eifers nicht ganz vertilgt.	11 "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.
12 So mache denn bekannt: Ich schließe hierdurch mit ihm meinen Bund, daß ihm Heil widerfahren soll;	12 Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace;
13 und zwar soll ihm und seinen Nachkommen nach ihm das Priestertum auf ewige Zeiten zustehen, zum Lohn dafür, daß er für seinen Gott geeifert und den Israeliten Sühne erwirkt hat.«	13 and it shall be to him, and to his descendants after him, the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the people of Israel.'"
14 Der damals getötete Israelit aber, der mitsamt der Midianitin getötet worden war, hieß Simri; er war der Sohn Salus und das Haupt eines Geschlechts (d.h. ein Stammesfürst) der Simeoniten;	14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, head of a fathers' house belonging to the Simeonites.
15 die damals getötete Midianitin aber hieß Kosbi; sie war die Tochter Zurs, des Hauptes einer Familie, eines midianitischen Geschlechts.	15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.
16 Darauf gebot der HERR dem Mose folgendes:	16 And the LORD said to Moses,
17 »Behandelt die Midianiter als Feinde und erschlagt sie!	17 "Harass the Midianites, and smite them;
18 Denn sie haben feindlich gegen euch gehandelt durch ihre Ränke (oder: Arglist), die sie gegen euch verübt haben in betreff des Peor und in betreff ihrer Landsmännin Kosbi, der Tochter eines midianitischen Fürsten, die am Tage des wegen des Peor verhängten Sterbens getötet worden ist.«	18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague on account of Peor."
