1 Im Jahre 172 (= 141/140 v.Chr.) sammelte der König Demetrius seine Streitkräfte und zog nach Medien, um Verstärkungen zum Kriege gegen Tryphon an sich zu ziehen.	1 In the one hundred and seventy-second year * Demetrius the king assembled his forces and marched into Media to secure help, so that he could make war against Trypho.
2 Als nun Arsakes, der König von Persien und Medien, vernahm, daß Demetrius in sein Gebet eingedrungen sei, schickte er einen seiner Heerführer ab, um ihn lebendig gefangen zu nehmen.	2 When Arsaces the king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had invaded his territory, he sent one of his commanders to take him alive.
3 Dieser zog ins Feld, besiegte das Heer des Demetrius, nahm ihn gefangen und brachte ihn zu Arsakes, der ihn ins Gefängnis werfen ließ.	3 And he went and defeated the army of Demetrius, and seized him and took him to Arsaces, who put him under guard.
4 Das Land Juda aber erfreute sich der Ruhe, solange Simon lebte. Er war darauf bedacht, das Wohl seines Volkes zu fördern, und dieses war mit seiner Regierung wohlzufrieden und hatte allezeit Wohlgefallen an seinem Ruhme.	4 The land * had rest all the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation; his rule was pleasing to them, as was the honor shown him, all his days.
5 Und zu all seinem Ruhme hinzu kam noch die Einnahme von Joppe, das er als Hafenort gewonnen hatte und zu einem Einfuhrplatze für die Inseln (und Küstenländer) des Mittelmeeres machte.	5 To crown all his honors he took Joppa for a harbor, and opened a way to the isles of the sea.
6 Er erweiterte seinem Volke, die Grenzen des Gebietsund war Herr im Lande;	6 He extended the borders of his nation, and gained full control of the country.
7 er brachte viele aus der Gefangenschaft zurückund nahm Gasera, Bethsura und die Burg einund beseitigte in ihnen alle heidnische Unreinigkeit,und niemand leistete ihm Widerstand.	7 He gathered a host of captives; he ruled over Gazara and Beth-zur and the citadel, and he removed its uncleanness from it; and there was none to oppose him.
8 Sie konnten ihr Land in Frieden bebauen;das Land gab seinen Ertragund die Bäume auf den Feldern ihre Früchte.	8 They tilled their land in peace; the ground gave its increase, and the trees of the plains their fruit.
9 Die Greise saßen auf den Straßen,besprachen alle das Wohl der Gemeinde,und die jungen Männer bekleideten sich mit dem Ehrenschmuck des Waffenrocks.	9 Old men sat in the streets; they all talked together of good things; and the youths donned the glories and garments of war.
10 Die Städte versorgte er mit Lebensmittelnund rüstete sie aus mit Festungswerken,so daß sein Ruhm erscholl bis ans Ende der Erde.	10 He supplied the cities with food, and furnished them with the means of defense, till his renown spread to the ends of the earth.
11 Er schaffte sicheren Frieden im Lande,daß Israel hoher Freude sich hingeben konnte;	11 He established peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy.
12 ein jeder saß unter seinem Weinstock und Feigenbaum,ohne daß jemand ihn aus seiner Ruhe aufschreckte.	12 Each man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to make them afraid.
13 Auf der Erde gab es keinen mehr, der sie bekriegte,und die Könige waren in jener Zeit gedemütigt.	13 No one was left in the land to fight them, and the kings were crushed in those days.
14 Er half allen Elenden in seinem Volke auf; über dem Gesetz wachte er mit Eiferund vertilgte alle Gottlosen und Abtrünnigen;	14 He strengthened all the humble of his people; he sought out the law, and did away with every lawless and wicked man.
15 das Heiligtum schmückte er herrlich ausund vermehrte die heiligen Geräte reichlich.	15 He made the sanctuary glorious, and added to the vessels of the sanctuary.
16 Als man nun zu Rom und bis Sparta hin Kunde vom Tode Jonathans erhielt, wurden alle tief betrübt;	16 It was heard in Rome, and as far away as Sparta, that Jonathan had died, and they were deeply grieved.
17 als man aber erfuhr, daß sein Bruder Simon als Hoherpriester an seine Stelle getreten sei und die Regierung im Lande und in den Städten darin führe,	17 When they heard that Simon his brother had become high priest in his place, and that he was ruling over the country and the cities in it
18 schrieben sie auf ehernen Tafeln an ihn, um die Freundschaft und Bundesgenossenschaft zu erneuern, die sie mit seinen Brüdern Judas und Jonathan geschlossen hatten.	18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew with him the friendship and alliance which they had established with Judas and Jonathan his brothers.
19 Das betreffende Schreiben kam in der Gemeindeversammlung zu Jerusalem zur Verlesung;	19 And these were read before the assembly in Jerusalem.
20 und dies ist die Abschrift des Schreibens, das die Spartaner sandten: »Die Obersten und die Hauptstadt der Spartaner entbieten dem Hohenpriester Simon, sowie den Ältesten und Priestern und dem übrigen Volke der Juden, ihren Brüdern, ihren Gruß.	20 This is a copy of the letter which the Spartans sent: "The rulers and the city of the Spartans to Simon the high priest and to the elders and the priests and the rest of the Jewish people, our brethren, greeting.
21 Die Gesandten, die von euch an unser Volk geschickt worden sind, haben uns Mitteilung von eurem Ruhm und eurer Ehre gemacht, und wir haben uns über ihr Kommen gefreut	21 The envoys who were sent to our people have told us about your glory and honor, and we rejoiced at their coming.
22 und haben das von ihnen Berichtete in die Volksbeschlüsse folgendermaßen eingetragen: »Numenius, der Sohn des Antiochus, und Antipater, der Sohn des Jason, sind als Gesandte der Juden zu uns gekommen, um den mit uns geschlossenen Freundschaftsbund zu erneuern.	22 And what they said we have recorded in our public decrees, as follows, 'Numenius the son of Antiochus and Antipater the son of Jason, envoys of the Jews, have come to us to renew their friendship with us.
23 Das Volk beschloß, diese Männer ehrenvoll zu empfangen und eine Abschrift ihrer Botschaft unter den Staatsurkunden des Volkes niederzulegen, damit das Volk der Spartaner ein Andenken habe. Eine Abschrift dieses Beschlusses aber haben wir dem Hohenpriester Simon ausgefertigt«.	23 It has pleased our people to receive these men with honor and to put a copy of their words in the public archives, so that the people of the Spartans may have a record of them. And they have sent a copy of this to Simon the high priest.'"
24 Später sandte Simon den Numenius mit einem großen goldenen Schild im Gewicht von 1000 Minen nach Rom, um die Bundesgenossenschaft mit ihnen zu befestigen.	24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a large gold shield weighing a thousand minas, to confirm the alliance with the Romans. *
25 Als nun das (jüdische) Volk dies alles erfuhr, sagte man: »Welchen Dank sollen wir Simon und seinen Söhnen erstatten?	25 When the people heard these things they said, "How shall we thank Simon and his sons?
26 Denn er und seine Brüder und sein ganzes väterliches Haus haben feste Tatkraft bewiesen: sie haben die Feinde Israels mit den Waffen in der Hand abgewehrt und unserm Volke die Freiheit errungen«.	26 For he and his brothers and the house of his father have stood firm; they have fought and repulsed Israel's enemies and established its freedom."
27 So brachten sie denn eine Inschrift auf ehernen Tafeln an und hängten diese an Säulen auf dem Zionsberge auf. Und dies ist der Wortlaut der Inschrift: Am 18. Elul (= September) des Jahres 172 (= 141 v.Chr.) – das ist das dritte Jahr – unter dem Hohenpriester Simon, dem Fürsten des Volkes Gottes, –	27 So they made a record on bronze tablets and put it upon pillars on Mount Zion. This is a copy of what they wrote: "On the eighteenth day of Elul, in the one hundred and seventy-second year, * which is the third year of Simon the great high priest,
28 ist uns in einer großen Versammlung der Priester und des Volkes, der Obersten des Volkes und der Ältesten des Landes Folgendes kundgetan worden:	28 in Asaramel, * in the great assembly of the priests and the people and the rulers of the nation and the elders of the country, the following was proclaimed to us:
29 Da oft Kriege stattfanden, haben Simon, der Sohn des Mattathias, aus der Familie Joarib, und seine Brüder ihr Leben aufs Spiel gesetzt und den Feinden ihres Volkes Widerstand geleistet, damit ihr Heiligtum und das Gesetz erhalten bliebe, und haben ihrem Volke hohen Ruhm verschafft.	29 "Since wars often occurred in the country, Simon the son of Mattathias, a priest of the sons * of Joarib, and his brothers, exposed themselves to danger and resisted the enemies of their nation, in order that their sanctuary and the law might be perserved; and they brought great glory to their nation.
30 Denn als Jonathan ihr Volk geeinigt hatte und ihr Hoherpriester geworden und zu seinen Vätern versammelt worden war	30 Jonathan rallied the * nation, and became their high priest, and was gathered to his people.
31 und ihre Feinde beschlossen hatten, in ihr Land einzudringen, um es zu verheeren und Hand an ihr Heiligtum zu legen,	31 And when their enemies decided to invade their country and lay hands on their sanctuary,
32 da trat Simon auf und kämpfte für sein Volk. Er opferte einen großen Teil seines eigenen Vermögens, um die Mannschaften im Heere seines Volkes zu bewaffnen und ihnen Sold zu geben.	32 then Simon rose up and fought for his nation. He spent great sums of his own money; he armed the men of his nation's forces and paid them wages.
33 Er befestigte die Städte Judäas und Bethsura an der Grenze Judäas, das vordem ein Waffenplatz der Feinde gewesen war, und legte jüdische Krieger als Besatzung hinein.	33 He fortified the cities of Judea, and Beth-zur on the borders of Judea, where formerly the arms of the enemy had been stored, and he placed there a garrison of Jews.
34 Auch die Seestadt Joppe befestigte er, sowie Gasara an der Grenze des Gebietes von Asdod, wo die Feinde vorher sich festgesetzt hatten; er siedelte dort Juden an und versah diese Städte mit allem, was zu ihrer Instandhaltung erforderlich war.	34 He also fortified Joppa, which is by the sea, and Gazara, which is on the borders of Azotus, where the enemy formerly dwelt. He settled Jews there, and provided in those cities * whatever was necessary for their restoration.
35 Da nun das Volk die Treue Simons erkannte, sowie den Ruhm, den er seinem Volke zu verschaffen suchte, ernannte es ihn zu seinem Oberhaupt und Hohenpriester, weil er alles dieses vollführt hatte, und wegen der Gerechtigkeit und Treue, die er seinem Volke unverbrüchlich bewahrte, und weil er das Wohl seines Volkes auf jede Weise zu fördern gesucht hatte.	35 "The people saw Simon's faithfulness * and the glory which he had resolved to win for his nation, and they made him their leader and high priest, because he had done all these things and because of the justice and loyalty which he had maintained toward his nation. He sought in every way to exalt his people.
36 Solange er am Leben war, gelang es durch sein Wirken, daß die Heiden aus dem jüdischen Lande entfernt wurden, und ebenso die Heiden in der Davidstadt zu Jerusalem, die sich dort eine feste Burg errichtet hatten, aus der sie hervorbrachen und die Heiligkeit der ganzen Umgebung des Tempels entweihten und an der geweihten Stätte schlimmes Unheil anrichteten.	36 And in his days things prospered in his hands, so that the Gentiles were put out of the * country, as were also the men in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had built themselves a citadel from which they used to sally forth and defile the environs of the sanctuary and do great damage to its purity.
37 Er legte jüdische Krieger hinein und befestigte die Burg zur Sicherung des Landes und der Hauptstadt und erhöhte die Mauern Jerusalems.	37 He settled Jews in it, and fortified it for the safety of the country and of the city, and built the walls of Jerusalem higher.
38 Der König Demetrius bestätigte ihm demgemäß seine Hohepriesterwürde,	38 "In view of these things King Demetrius confirmed him in the high priesthood,
39 nahm ihn in die Zahl seiner Vertrauten auf und erwies ihm hohe Ehren;	39 and he made him one of the king's * friends and paid him high honors.
40 denn er hatte vernommen, daß die Juden von den Römern den Ehrennamen Freunde, Bundesgenossen und Brüder erhalten und daß man (in Rom) die Gesandten Simons ehrenvoll empfangen hatte.	40 For he had heard that the Jews were addressed by the Romans as friends and allies and brethren, and that the Romans * had received the envoys of Simon with honor.
41 So haben denn die Juden und ihre Priester beschlossen, daß Simon ihr Oberhaupt (= Fürst oder Anführer) und Hoherpriester für immer sein soll, bis ein glaubwürdiger Prophet erstehen würde,	41 "And * the Jews and their priests decided that Simon should be their leader and high priest for ever, until a trustworthy prophet should arise,
42 und daß er auch ihr Feldhauptmann sein (und ihm die Sorge für das Heiligtum obliegen) soll, damit er Beamte bestelle für die öffentlichen Arbeiten und für die Verwaltung des Landes, für die Waffen und die Festungen;	42 and that he should be governor over them and that he should take charge of the sanctuary and appoint men over its tasks and over the country and the weapons and the strongholds, and that he should take charge of the sanctuary,
43 und daß ihm die Sorge für das Heiligtum obliegen und ihm Gehorsam von allen geleistet werden soll; daß ferner in seinem Namen alle Erlasse im Lande ausgefertigt werden und er sich in Purpur kleiden und Goldschmuck tragen soll.	43 and that he should be obeyed by all, and that all contracts in the country should be written in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple and wear gold.
44 Auch soll es niemandem von dem Volk und von den Priestern gestattet sein, eine von diesen Bestimmungen aufzuheben und seinen Anordnungen zu widersprechen und ohne seine Erlaubnis eine Volksversammlung im Lande zu veranstalten und sich in Purpur zu kleiden oder eine Goldspange als Schmuck zu tragen.	44 "And none of the people or priests shall be permitted to nullify any of these decisions or to oppose what he says, or to convene an assembly in the country without his permission, or to be clothed in purple or put on a gold buckle.
45 Wer sich aber gegen diese Bestimmungen vergeht oder eine von ihnen aufhebt, der soll straffällig sein«.	45 Whoever acts contrary to these decisions or nullifies any of them shall be liable to punishment."
46 Das ganze Volk beschloß also, zu Gunsten Simons zu verfügen, daß nach diesen Bestimmungen verfahren werden solle;	46 And all the people agreed to grant Simon the right to act in accord with these decisions.
47 Simon aber willigte ein und erklärte sich bereit, Hoherpriester und Feldhauptmann und Volksfürst der Juden und der Priester zu sein und dem Ganzen vorzustehen.	47 So Simon accepted and agreed to be high priest, to be commander and ethnarch of the Jews and priests, and to be protector of them all. *
48 Sodann bestimmte man, diese Verfügung solle auf ehernen Tafeln angebracht und diese im Vorhofe des Heiligtums an einem weithin sichtbaren Orte aufgestellt werden.	48 And they gave orders to inscribe this decree upon bronze tablets, to put them up in a conspicuous place in the precincts of the sanctuary,
49 Eine Abschrift davon aber ließ man in der Schatzkammer niederlegen, damit sie dem Simon und seinen Söhnen zur Verfügung stände.	49 and to deposit copies of them in the treasury, so that Simon and his sons might have them.
