1 Hierauf gebot er dem Mose: »Steige zum HERRN (= zu mir) herauf, du nebst Aaron, Nadab und Abihu und siebzig von den Ältesten der Israeliten, und bringt von fern eure Verehrung dar.	1 Moses himself was told, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, with Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You shall all worship at some distance,
2 Mose aber soll dann allein nahe an den HERRN herantreten; die anderen dagegen sollen nicht näher hinzutreten, und auch das Volk darf nicht mit ihm heraufsteigen.«	2 but Moses alone is to come close to the LORD; the others shall not come too near, and the people shall not come up at all with Moses."
3 Hierauf kam Mose und teilte dem Volke alle Verordnungen des HERRN und alle Rechtssatzungen mit. Da gab das ganze Volk einstimmig die Erklärung ab: »Alle Verordnungen, die der HERR erlassen hat, wollen wir ausführen.«	3 When Moses came to the people and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD, they all answered with one voice, "We will do everything that the LORD has told us."
4 Da schrieb Mose alles, was der HERR geboten hatte, nieder und baute am andern Morgen früh einen Altar am Fuß des Berges und (errichtete) zwölf Malsteine entsprechend den zwölf Stämmen Israels.	4 Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and, rising early the next day, he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
5 Dann erteilte er den jungen israelitischen Männern den Auftrag, Brandopfer(tiere) herzubringen und junge Stiere als Heilsopfer für den HERRN zu schlachten.	5 Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelites to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls as peace offerings to the LORD,
6 Hierauf nahm Mose die eine Hälfte des Blutes und goß es in die Opferschalen; die andere Hälfte des Blutes aber sprengte er an den Altar.	6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; the other half he splashed on the altar.
7 Hierauf nahm er das Bundesbuch und las es dem Volke laut vor; und sie erklärten: »Alles, was der HERR geboten hat, wollen wir tun und willig erfüllen.«	7 Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people, who answered, "All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do."
8 Dann nahm Mose das Blut und besprengte mit ihm das Volk, wobei er ausrief: »Dies ist das Blut des Bundes, den der HERR mit euch auf Grund aller dieser Gebote geschlossen hat!«	8 Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of his."
9 Als hierauf Mose und Aaron, Nadab und Abihu und siebzig von den Ältesten der Israeliten hinaufgestiegen waren,	9 Moses then went up with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel,
10 schauten sie den Gott Israels: (der Boden) unter seinen Füßen war wie ein Gebilde von Saphirplatten (oder: -fliesen) und wie der Himmel selbst an hellem Glanz.	10 and they beheld the God of Israel. Under his feet there appeared to be sapphire tilework, as clear as the sky itself.
11 Er streckte aber seine Hand nicht aus gegen die Auserwählten der Israeliten: nein, sie schauten Gott und aßen und tranken.	11 Yet he did not smite these chosen Israelites. After gazing on God, they could still eat and drink.
12 Hierauf gebot der HERR dem Mose: »Steige zu mir auf den Berg herauf und verweile dort, damit ich dir die Steintafeln mit dem Gesetz und den Geboten gebe, die ich zu ihrer Unterweisung aufgeschrieben habe.«	12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and, while you are there, I will give you the stone tablets on which I have written the commandments intended for their instruction."
13 Da machte sich Mose mit seinem Diener Josua auf den Weg und stieg auf den Berg Gottes hinauf.	13 So Moses set out with Joshua, his aide, and went up to the mountain of God.
14 Zu den Ältesten aber hatte er gesagt: »Wartet hier auf uns, bis wir zu euch zurückkehren. Aaron und Hur sind ja bei euch: wer irgendeinen Rechtshandel hat, wende sich an sie.«	14 The elders, however, had been told by him, "Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are staying with you. If anyone has a complaint, let him refer the matter to them."
15 Als Mose dann auf den Berg gestiegen war, verhüllte Gewölk den Berg,	15 After Moses had gone up, a cloud covered the mountain.
16 und die Herrlichkeit des HERRN ließ sich auf den Berg Sinai nieder, und das Gewölk verhüllte den Berg sechs Tage lang; erst am siebten Tage rief er dem Mose aus dem Gewölk heraus zu.	16 The glory of the LORD settled upon Mount Sinai. The cloud covered it for six days, and on the seventh day he called to Moses from the midst of the cloud.
17 Die Herrlichkeit des HERRN zeigte sich aber vor den Augen der Israeliten wie ein verzehrendes Feuer auf der Spitze des Berges.	17 To the Israelites the glory of the LORD was seen as a consuming fire on the mountaintop.
18 Da begab sich Mose mitten in das Gewölk hinein und stieg auf den Berg hinauf. Und Mose verweilte auf dem Berge vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte.	18 But Moses passed into the midst of the cloud as he went up on the mountain; and there he stayed for forty days and forty nights.
