Prima lettera di Pietro 2

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Per la qual cosa deposta ogni malizia, e ogni frode, e le finzioni, e le invidie, e tutte le detrazioni,	1 Rid yourselves, then, of al spite, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and carping criticism.
2 Come bambini di fresco nati bramate il latte spirituale sincero; affinchè per esso cresciate a salute:	2 Like new-born babies al your longing should be for milk -- the unadulterated spiritual milk -- which willhelp you to grow up to salvation,
3 Se pure gustato avete, come è dolce il Signore.	3 at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good .
4 A cui accostandovi pietra viva, rigettata dagli uomini, ma eletta, e onorata da Dio:	4 He is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselvesclose to him
5 Voi pure come pietre vive siete edificati sopra di lui, casa spirituale, sacerdozio santo per offerire vittime spirituali, gradite a Dio per Gesù Cristo.	5 so that you, too, may be living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer the spiritualsacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Per la qual cosa si ha nella scrittura: ecco che io pongo in Sion una pietra principale, angolare, eletta, preziosa: e chi in lei crederà, non rimarrà confuso.	6 As scripture says: Now I am laying a stone in Zion, a chosen, precious cornerstone and no one whorelies on this wil be brought to disgrace.
7 Per voi adunque, che credete, ell' è di onore: ma per quei, che non credono, ella è la pietra rigettata da coloro, che fabbricavano: questa è divenuta testata dell'angolo:	7 To you believers it brings honour. But for unbelievers, it is rather a stone which the builders rejectedthat became a cornerstone,
8 E pietra d'inciampo, e pietra di scandalo per costoro, che urtano nella parola, e non credono, al che furon pur ordinati.	8 a stumbling stone, a rock to trip people up. They stumble over it because they do not believe in theWord; it was the fate in store for them.
9 Ma voi stirpe eletta, sacerdozio regale, gente santa, popolo di acquisto: affinchè esaltiate le virtù di lui, che dalle tenebre vi chiamò all'ammirabil sua luce.	9 But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession tosing the praises of God who cal ed you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
10 I quali una volta non popolo, ma ora popolo di Dio: i quali non fatti partecipi di misericordia, ora poi fatti partecipi della misericordia.	10 Once you were a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside his pity; nowyou have received pity.
11 Carissimi, io vi scongiuro, che come forestieri, e pellegrini vi guardiate dai desiderj carnali, che militan contro dell'anima,	11 I urge you, my dear friends, as strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disorderednatural inclinations that attack the soul.
12 Vivendo bene tralle genti: affinchè laddove sparlan di voi come di uomini di mal affare, considerando le vostre buone opere, glorifichino Dio nel dì, in cui li visiterà.	12 Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives youlead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounceyou as criminals.
13 Siate adunque per riguardo a Dio soggetti ad ogni uomo creato: tanto al Re, come sopra di tutti;	13 For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority of every human institution: the emperor, as the supremeauthority,
14 Quanto ai presidi come spedili da lui per far vendetta de' malfattori, e per onorare i buoni:	14 and the governors as commissioned by him to punish criminals and praise those who do good.
15 Perché tale è la volontà di Dio, che ben facendo chiudiate la bocca alla ignoranza degli uomini stolti:	15 It is God's will that by your good deeds you should silence the ignorant talk of fools.
16 Come liberi, e non quasi tenendo la libertà per velame della malizia, ma come servi di Dio.	16 You are slaves of no one except God, so behave like free people, and never use your freedom as acover for wickedness.
17 Rispettate tutti: amate i fratelli? temete Dio: rendete onore al Re.	17 Have respect for everyone and love for your fel ow-believers; fear God and honour the emperor.
18 Servi, siate soggetti ai padroni con ogni timore, non solo ai buoni, e modesti, ma anche agl' indiscreti.	18 Slaves, you should obey your masters respectful y, not only those who are kind and reasonable butalso those who are difficult to please.
19 Imperocché è cosa di merito, se per riflesso a Dio uno sopporta molestie, patendo ingiustamente.	19 You see, there is merit if, in awareness of God, you put up with the pains of undeserved punishment;
20 Imperocché qual onore è egli, se peccando, ed essendo puniti, patite? Ma se bene operando, e patendo, soffrite in pazienza: questo è il merito dinanzi a Dio.	20 but what glory is there in putting up with a beating after you have done something wrong? The merit inthe sight of God is in putting up with it patiently when you are punished for doing your duty.
21 Imperocché a questo siete stati chiamati: dappoiché anche Cristo patì per noi, lasciando a voi l'esempio, affinchè le vestigia di lui seguitiate:	21 This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for youto fol ow in his steps.
22 Il quale non fè peccato, né frode trovossi nella sua bocca:	22 He had done nothing wrong, and had spoken no deceit.
23 Il quale venendo maledetto, non malediceva: strapazzato non minacciava: ma si rimetteva nelle mani dì chi ingiustamente lo giudicava:	23 He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults; when he was suffering he made no threats but puthis trust in the upright judge.
24 Il quale i peccati nostri portò egli stesso sul proprio corpo sopra del regno (affinchè morti al peccato, viviamo alla giustizia) per le lividure del quale siete stati sanati.	24 He was bearing our sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our sins and live foruprightness; through his bruises you have been healed.
25 Imperocché eravate come pecore? sbandate, ma vi siete adesso convertiti al pastore, e vescovo delle anime vostre.	25 You had gone astray like sheep but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of yoursouls.
