BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 La sapienza è il libro de' comandamenti di Dio, e la legge, che dura in eterno: tutti color, che la osservano, giungono alla vita, e tutti quegli, che l'abbandonano, giungono alla morte.	1 She is the book of God's commandments, the Law that stands for ever; those who keep her shal live,those who desert her shal die.
2 Convertiti, Giacobbe, ed abbracciala, cammina al lume di essa per la strada, che ella addita.	2 Turn back, Jacob, seize her, in her radiance make your way to light:
3 Non dare ad altri la tua gloria, e la tua dignità ad una nazione straniera.	3 do not yield your glory to another, your privilege to a people not your own.
4 Beati siarn noi, o Israele, perché manifesto è a noi quello, che piace a Pio.	4 Israel, blessed are we: what pleases God has been revealed to us!
5 Fatti animo, popol di Dio, che la memoria conservi di Israele.	5 Take courage, my people, memorial of Israel!
6 Voi siete stati venduti alle genti non per essere annichilati, ma perché irritaste l'ira di Dio foste dati in poter de' nemici;	6 You were sold to the nations, but not for extermination. You provoked God; and so were delivered toyour enemies,
7 Imperocché voi esacerbaste corni, che vi creò, il Dio eterno, sacrificando a' demoni, e non a Dio;	7 since you had angered your Creator by offering sacrifices to demons, and not to God.
8 Imperocché vi dimenticaste di Dio, che vi nutricò, e affliggeste la nutrice vostra Gerusalemme;	8 You had forgotten the eternal God who reared you. You had also grieved Jerusalem who nursed you,
9 Imperocché ella vide l'ira di Dio, venir sopra di voi, e disse: adite, o città vicine di Sion, Dio mi ha mandato un gran dolore:	9 for when she saw God's anger fal ing on you, she said: Listen, you neighbours of Zion: God has sent megreat sorrow.
10 Imperocché ho io veduta là schiavitudine del popol mio, de' miei figli, e delle figlie, alla quale l'Eterno gli condannò:	10 I have seen my sons and daughters taken into captivity, which the Eternal brought down on them.
11 Imperocché io gli allevai con piacere; e gli ho lasciati con pianto: con dolore.	11 I had reared them joyful y; in tears, in sorrow, I watched them go away.
12 Nissun si allegri in vedermi vedova, e desolata: son rimasa abbandonata da molta gente pei peccati de' miei figliuoli, i quali deviarono dalla legge di Dio.	12 Do not, any of you, exult over me, a widow, deserted by so many; I am bereaved because of the sinsof my children, who turned away from the Law of God,
13 E ignoravano i suoi precetti, non battevan la strada de' comandamenti di Dio, né colla giustizia camminarono pe sentieri della sua verità.	13 who did not want to know his precepts and would not fol ow the ways of his commandments or treadthe paths of discipline as his justice directed.
14 Vengan le vicine di Sion, e meco facciano ricordanza della schiavitudine de' miei figli, e delle figlie, nella quale gli ha condotti l'Eterno;	14 Come here, neighbours of Zion! Remember my sons' and daughters' captivity, which the Eternalbrought down on them.
15 Imperocché mandò egli contro di loro una nazione rimota, nazione perversa, e di lingua ignota;	15 How he brought a distant nation down on them, a ruthless nation speaking a foreign language, theyshowed neither respect for the aged, nor pity for the child;
16 I quali non hanno avuto rispetto pei vecchi, né misericordia pe' fanciulli, e hanno menati via i cari della vedova, e priva di figli la hanno lasciati in desolazione.	16 they carried off the widow's cherished sons, they left her quite alone, bereft of her daughters.
17 E qual ajuto recarvi poss'io?	17 For my part, how could I help you?
18 Ma colui, che mandò sopra di voi questi mali, egli vi libererà dalle mani de' vostri nemici.	18 He who brought those disasters down on you, is the one to deliver you from your enemies' clutches.
19 Andate figli, andate, ed io mi resti pur sola.	19 Go, my children, go your way! I must stay bereft and lonely;
20 Mi sono spogliata del manto di pace, e mi son vestita del sacco di supplichevole, e alzerò mie grida all'Altissimo per i tutti i miei giorni,	20 I have taken off the clothes of peace and put on the sackcloth of entreaty; al my life I shal cry to theEternal.
21 Fatevi animo, o figliuoli, alzate le vostra grida al Signore, e vi libererà dal potere de' principi nemici;	21 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he wil deliver you from tyranny, from the clutches of yourenemies;
22 Imperocché io ho posta la speranza mia nell'Eterno, salute vostra, il Santo mi ha consolala colla misericordia, che verrà a voi dall'eterno salvatore vostro; '	22 for I look to the Eternal for your rescue, and joy has come to me from the Holy One at the mercy soonto reach you from your Saviour, the Eternal.
23 Imperocché con lagrime, e con sospiri vi licenziai, ma riconduravvi a me il Signore con gaudio, e letizia sempiterna.	23 In sorrow and tears I watched you go away, but God wil give you back to me in joy and gladness forever.
24 E siccome le vicine di Sion videro venir da Dio la schiavitù vostra, cosi vedranno assai presto la salute vostra venire da Dio a voi con onore grande, e splendore eterno.	24 As the neighbours of Zion have now witnessed your captivity, so wil they soon see your rescue byGod, which wil come upon you with great glory and splendour of the Eternal.
25 Figliuoli, sopportate pazientemente l'ira, che è venuta sopra di voi: imperocché ti ha perseguitato il tuo nemico, ma tosto vedrai tu la perdizione di lui, e tu calcherai la sua cervice.	25 My children, patiently bear the anger brought on you by God. Your enemy has persecuted you, butsoon you wil witness his destruction and set your foot on his neck.
26 I teneri miei figliuoli hanno battute aspre strade; perocché sono stati condotti come una greggia rapita dagli inimici.	26 My favourite children have travel ed by rough roads, carried off like a flock by a marauding enemy.
27 Fatevi animo, o figliuoli, e alzate le vostre grida al Signore: perocché si ricorderà di voi colui, che vi ha trasportati;	27 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he who brought this on you wil remember you.
28 Imperocché se vostra volontà si fu di andare lungi da Dio, con volontà dieci volte tanta lui cercherete ravveduti;	28 As by your wil you first strayed from God, so now turn back and search for him ten times harder;
29 Imperocché colui, che mandò a voi questi mali, egli pure a voi manderà una sempiterna allegrezza col darvi salute.	29 for as he has been bringing down those disasters on you, so wil he rescue you and give you eternaljoy.
30 Stadi buon animo, Gerusalemme; perocché ti consola colui, che a te da il nome.	30 Take courage, Jerusalem: he who gave you your name wil console you.
31 I cattivi, che ti straziarono, periranno: e saranno puniti quelli, che hanno goduto di tua rovina:	31 Disaster wil come to al who have il -treated you and gloated over your fal .
32 Le città, alle quali hanno servito i tuoi figli, saran gastigate, e quella che tenne seco i tuoi figli,	32 Disaster wil come to the cities where your children were slaves; disaster to whichever one receivedyour children,
33 Siccome si allegrò della tua rovina, e fece festa di tua caduta, così della sua desolazione sarà rattristata.	33 for just as she rejoiced at your fal and was happy to see you ruined, so wil she grieve over her owndesolation.
34 E le sarà tolto il brio della sua moltitudine, e la sua allegrìa in lutto si cangerà;	34 I shall deprive her of the joy of a populous city, and her insolence wil turn to mourning;
35 Imperocché fuoco manderà sopra di lei l'Eterno per lunghi giorni, e da' demonj sarà abitata per molto tempo.	35 fire from the Eternal wil befall her for many a day, and demons wil dwel in her for ages.
36 Mira, o Gerusalemme, all'Oriente, e vedi la allegrezza, che da Dio Tiene a te;	36 Jerusalem, turn your eyes to the east, see the joy that is coming to you from God.
37 Imperocché ecco, che vengono a te i figli tuoi divisi da te per andare dispersi: ei vengono raunati da Oriente fino a Occidente, secondo la parola del Santo, lieti, lodando Dio.	37 Look, the children you watched go away are on their way home; reassembled from east and west, theyare on their way home at the Holy One's command, rejoicing in God's glory.
