Siracide 38

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Rendi onore al medico per ragione della necessità, perché egli è stato fatto dall'Altissimo;	1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.
2 Perocché tutta la medicina viene da Dio, e sarà rimunerata dal re.	2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.
3 La scienza del medico lo innarzerà agli onori, ed ei sarà celebrato dinanzi ai grandi.	3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.
4 Egli è l'Altissimo, che creò dalla terra i medicamenti, e l'uomo prudente non gli avrà a schifo.	4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;
5 Un legno non raddolcì egli le acque amare?	5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?
6 La virtù di questi appartiene alla cognizione degli uomini, e il Signore ne ha data ad essi la scienza, affin di essere onorato per le sue meraviglie.	6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,
7 Con questi egli cura, e mitiga i dolori, e lo speziale ne fa composizioni grate, e manipola unguenti salutari, e i suoi lavori non avran fine;	7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;
8 Perocché la benedizione di Dio tutta empie la terra.	8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.
9 Figliuolo, quando se' malato, non disprezzare te stesso, ma prega, il Signore, ed egli ti guarirà.	9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:
10 Allontanati dal peccato, e raddirizza le tue azioni, e monda il cuor tuo da ogni colpa.	10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;
11 Offerisci odor soave, e il fior di farina per memoria, e sia perfetta la tua obblazione; e poi da luogo al me dico;	11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.
12 Perché Dio lo ha istituito; ed egli non si parta da te, perché l'assistenza di lui è necessaria.	12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.
13 Conciossiachè havvi un tempo, in cui dei cadere nelle mani d'alcuni di essi:	13 There are times that give him an advantage,
14 Ed eglino pregheranno il Signore, che secondi i loro lenitivi, e dia la sanità, alla quale è diretta la lor professione.	14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.
15 Colui, che pecca sotto degli occhi di lui, che lo creò, caderà nelle mani del medico.	15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.
16 Figliuolo, spargi lagrime sopra il morto, e come per duro avvenimento comincia a sospirare, e secondo il rito ricuopri il suo corpo, e non trascurare la sua sepoltura.	16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:
17 E per non essere calunniato, fa amaro duolo per lui per un giorno, dipoi racconsolati per fuggir la tristezza:	17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,
18 E fa il duolo secondo il merito della persona per un di, o due, per evitare le maldicenze;	18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,
19 Perocché dalla tristezza vien presto la morte, e la malinconia del cuore deprime le forse, e curva il collo.	19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.
20 Collo star ritirato si mantien la tristezza, ed è la vita del povero, qual è il suo cuore.	20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.
21 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore alla tristezza, ma cacciala da te, e ricordati del fine.	21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.
22 Non te ne scordare; perocché di colà non si torna; e non gioverai niente ad altri, e farai male a te stesso.	22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.
23 Ricordati di quel, che o stato di me; perocché lo stesso sarà di te: oggi a me, domani a te.	23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.
24 La requie del defunto renda per te tranquilla la memoria di lui, e tu il consola, mentre si parte da lui il suo spirito.	24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.
25 La sapienza si acquista dallo scriba nel tempo di libertà dagli affari, e chi ha poco da agire, acquisterà la sapienza. Di qual sapienza si empierà	25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?
26 Colui, che mena l'aratro, e fa sua gloria di stimolare col pungolo i bovi, ed è tutto nei loro lavori, e non di scorre d'altro, che della progenie dei tori.	26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.
27 Il suo cuore è rivolto a tirare i solchi, e le sue vigilie a ingrassare le vacche.	27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.
28 Cosi il legnaiuolo, e l'architetto lavorano la notte come il giorno: colui, che incide gli emblemi degli anelli, e coll'assiduo pensare ne diversifica la scultura: applica il suo cuore a imitar la pittura, e colle sue vigilie perfeziona il suo lavoro.	28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.
29 Cosi il fabbro sedendo presso all'incudine intento al ferro, ch'ei mette in opera, il vapore del fuoco gli asciuga le carni, ed ei combatte cogli ardori della fornace:	29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.
30 Egli ha intronate le orecchie dal suon de' martelli, e gli occhi fisi al modello dell'opra sua:	30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.
31 Il suo cuore è inteso a finire i lavori, e colle sue vigilie gli orna, e gli perfeziona.	31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;
32 Così colui, che fa i vasi di terra assiso al suo lavoro gira co' piedi la ruota, ed è sempre in sollecitudine per quel, che ha per le mani, e conta il numero di tutte le opere sue.	32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.
33 Colle sue braccia impasta la creta, e si incurva colla sua forza davanti a' suoi piedi.	33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;
34 Il cuor di lui sarà inteso alla in verniciatura, e veglierà alla nettezza della fornace.	34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.
35 Il forte di tutti costoro è nelle lor mani, e ognuno è sapiente nel suo mestiero:
36 Senza di loro non si fabbrica una città.
37 Eglino però non abiteranno dappresso, e non anderanno girando, e non entreranno nelle adunanze.
38 Non saranno assisi trai giudici, e non intenderanno le leggi giudiciali, e non insegneranno le regole della vita, e della giustizia, e non si metteranno ad esporre le parabole:
39 Ma essi ristorano le cose del mondo, e i loro voti sono per l'esercizio dell'arte loro, applicando l'anima propria a intendere la legge dell'Altissimo.
