LXXNEW JERUSALEM
και παρελαβεν γοργιας πεντακισχιλιους ανδρας και χιλιαν ιππον εκλεκτην και απηρεν η παρεμβολη νυκτος1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight
ωστε επιβαλειν επι την παρεμβολην των ιουδαιων και παταξαι αυτους αφνω και υιοι της ακρας ησαν αυτω οδηγοι2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.
και ηκουσεν ιουδας και απηρεν αυτος και οι δυνατοι παταξαι την δυναμιν του βασιλεως την εν αμμαους3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,
εως ετι εσκορπισμεναι ησαν αι δυναμεις απο της παρεμβολης4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.
και ηλθεν γοργιας εις την παρεμβολην ιουδου νυκτος και ουδενα ευρεν και εζητει αυτους εν τοις ορεσιν οτι ειπεν φευγουσιν ουτοι αφ' ημων5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'
και αμα ημερα ωφθη ιουδας εν τω πεδιω εν τρισχιλιοις ανδρασιν πλην καλυμματα και μαχαιρας ουκ ειχον ως ηβουλοντο6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.
και ειδον παρεμβολην εθνων ισχυραν και τεθωρακισμενην και ιππον κυκλουσαν αυτην και ουτοι διδακτοι πολεμου7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.
και ειπεν ιουδας τοις ανδρασιν τοις μετ' αυτου μη φοβεισθε το πληθος αυτων και το ορμημα αυτων μη δειλωθητε8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.
μνησθητε ως εσωθησαν οι πατερες ημων εν θαλασση ερυθρα οτε εδιωκεν αυτους φαραω εν δυναμει9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.
και νυν βοησωμεν εις ουρανον ει θελησει ημας και μνησθησεται διαθηκης πατερων και συντριψει την παρεμβολην ταυτην κατα προσωπον ημων σημερον10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;
και γνωσονται παντα τα εθνη οτι εστιν ο λυτρουμενος και σωζων τον ισραηλ11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'
και ηραν οι αλλοφυλοι τους οφθαλμους αυτων και ειδον αυτους ερχομενους εξ εναντιας12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,
και εξηλθον εκ της παρεμβολης εις πολεμον και εσαλπισαν οι παρα ιουδου13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet
και συνηψαν και συνετριβησαν τα εθνη και εφυγον εις το πεδιον14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain
οι δε εσχατοι παντες επεσον εν ρομφαια και εδιωξαν αυτους εως γαζηρων και εως των πεδιων της ιδουμαιας και αζωτου και ιαμνειας και επεσαν εξ αυτων εις ανδρας τρισχιλιους15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.
και απεστρεψεν ιουδας και η δυναμις απο του διωκειν οπισθεν αυτων16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men
και ειπεν προς τον λαον μη επιθυμησητε των σκυλων οτι πολεμος εξ εναντιας ημων17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.
και γοργιας και η δυναμις εν τω ορει εγγυς ημων αλλα στητε νυν εναντιον των εχθρων ημων και πολεμησατε αυτους και μετα ταυτα λαβετε τα σκυλα μετα παρρησιας18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them, and then you can safely collect the booty.'
ετι πληρουντος ιουδου ταυτα μερος τι ωφθη εκκυπτον εκ του ορους19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.
και ειδεν οτι τετροπωνται και εμπυριζουσιν την παρεμβολην ο γαρ καπνος ο θεωρουμενος ενεφανιζεν το γεγονος20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke, which they could see, attested the fact-
οι δε ταυτα συνιδοντες εδειλωθησαν σφοδρα συνιδοντες δε και την ιουδου παρεμβολην εν τω πεδιω ετοιμην εις παραταξιν21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,
εφυγον παντες εις γην αλλοφυλων22 they al fled into Philistine territory.
και ιουδας ανεστρεψεν επι την σκυλειαν της παρεμβολης και ελαβον χρυσιον πολυ και αργυριον και υακινθον και πορφυραν θαλασσιαν και πλουτον μεγαν23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.
και επιστραφεντες υμνουν και ευλογουν εις ουρανον οτι καλον οτι εις τον αιωνα το ελεος αυτου24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'
και εγενηθη σωτηρια μεγαλη τω ισραηλ εν τη ημερα εκεινη25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.
οσοι δε των αλλοφυλων διεσωθησαν παραγενηθεντες απηγγειλαν τω λυσια παντα τα συμβεβηκοτα26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.
ο δε ακουσας συνεχυθη και ηθυμει οτι ουχ οια ηθελεν τοιαυτα εγεγονει τω ισραηλ και ουχ οια αυτω ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς εξεβη27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.
και εν τω ερχομενω ενιαυτω συνελοχησεν ανδρων επιλεκτων εξηκοντα χιλιαδας και πεντακισχιλιαν ιππον ωστε εκπολεμησαι αυτους28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.
και ηλθον εις την ιδουμαιαν και παρενεβαλον εν βαιθσουροις και συνηντησεν αυτοις ιουδας εν δεκα χιλιασιν ανδρων29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.
και ειδεν την παρεμβολην ισχυραν και προσηυξατο και ειπεν ευλογητος ει ο σωτηρ ισραηλ ο συντριψας το ορμημα του δυνατου εν χειρι του δουλου σου δαυιδ και παρεδωκας την παρεμβολην των αλλοφυλων εις χειρας ιωναθου υιου σαουλ και του αιροντος τα σκευη αυτου30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.
ουτως συγκλεισον την παρεμβολην ταυτην εν χειρι λαου σου ισραηλ και αισχυνθητωσαν επι τη δυναμει και τη ιππω αυτων31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.
δος αυτοις δειλιαν και τηξον θρασος ισχυος αυτων και σαλευθητωσαν τη συντριβη αυτων32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.
καταβαλε αυτους ρομφαια αγαπωντων σε και αινεσατωσαν σε παντες οι ειδοτες το ονομα σου εν υμνοις33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'
και συνεβαλλον αλληλοις και επεσον εκ της παρεμβολης λυσιου εις πεντακισχιλιους ανδρας και επεσον εξ εναντιας αυτων34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.
ιδων δε λυσιας την γενομενην τροπην της αυτου συνταξεως της δε ιουδου το γεγενημενον θαρσος και ως ετοιμοι εισιν η ζην η τεθνηκεναι γενναιως απηρεν εις αντιοχειαν και εξενολογει πλεοναστον παλιν παραγινεσθαι εις την ιουδαιαν35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.
ειπεν δε ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου ιδου συνετριβησαν οι εχθροι ημων αναβωμεν καθαρισαι τα αγια και εγκαινισαι36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'
και συνηχθη η παρεμβολη πασα και ανεβησαν εις ορος σιων37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.
και ειδον το αγιασμα ηρημωμενον και το θυσιαστηριον βεβηλωμενον και τας θυρας κατακεκαυμενας και εν ταις αυλαις φυτα πεφυκοτα ως εν δρυμω η ως εν ενι των ορεων και τα παστοφορια καθηρημενα38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.
και διερρηξαν τα ιματια αυτων και εκοψαντο κοπετον μεγαν και επεθεντο σποδον39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.
και επεσαν επι προσωπον επι την γην και εσαλπισαν ταις σαλπιγξιν των σημασιων και εβοησαν εις ουρανον40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.
τοτε επεταξεν ιουδας ανδρασιν πολεμειν τους εν τη ακρα εως καθαριση τα αγια41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.
και επελεξατο ιερεις αμωμους θελητας νομου42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law
και εκαθαρισαν τα αγια και ηραν τους λιθους του μιασμου εις τοπον ακαθαρτον43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.
και εβουλευσαντο περι του θυσιαστηριου της ολοκαυτωσεως του βεβηλωμενου τι αυτω ποιησωσιν44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,
και επεσεν αυτοις βουλη αγαθη καθελειν αυτο μηποτε γενηται αυτοις εις ονειδος οτι εμιαναν τα εθνη αυτο και καθειλον το θυσιαστηριον45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it
και απεθεντο τους λιθους εν τω ορει του οικου εν τοπω επιτηδειω μεχρι του παραγενηθηναι προφητην του αποκριθηναι περι αυτων46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.
και ελαβον λιθους ολοκληρους κατα τον νομον και ωκοδομησαν θυσιαστηριον καινον κατα το προτερον47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.
και ωκοδομησαν τα αγια και τα εντος του οικου και τας αυλας ηγιασαν48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.
και εποιησαν σκευη αγια καινα και εισηνεγκαν την λυχνιαν και το θυσιαστηριον των θυμιαματων και την τραπεζαν εις τον ναον49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.
και εθυμιασαν επι το θυσιαστηριον και εξηψαν τους λυχνους τους επι της λυχνιας και εφαινον εν τω ναω50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.
και επεθηκαν επι την τραπεζαν αρτους και εξεπετασαν τα καταπετασματα και ετελεσαν παντα τα εργα α εποιησαν51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.
και ωρθρισαν το πρωι τη πεμπτη και εικαδι του μηνος του ενατου ουτος ο μην χασελευ του ογδοου και τεσσαρακοστου και εκατοστου ετους52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn
και ανηνεγκαν θυσιαν κατα τον νομον επι το θυσιαστηριον των ολοκαυτωματων το καινον ο εποιησαν53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.
κατα τον καιρον και κατα την ημεραν εν η εβεβηλωσαν αυτο τα εθνη εν εκεινη ενεκαινισθη εν ωδαις και κιθαραις και κινυραις και κυμβαλοις54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.
και επεσεν πας ο λαος επι προσωπον και προσεκυνησαν και ευλογησαν εις ουρανον τον ευοδωσαντα αυτοις55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.
και εποιησαν τον εγκαινισμον του θυσιαστηριου ημερας οκτω και προσηνεγκαν ολοκαυτωματα μετ' ευφροσυνης και εθυσαν θυσιαν σωτηριου και αινεσεως56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.
και κατεκοσμησαν το κατα προσωπον του ναου στεφανοις χρυσοις και ασπιδισκαις και ενεκαινισαν τας πυλας και τα παστοφορια και εθυρωσαν αυτα57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.
και εγενηθη ευφροσυνη μεγαλη εν τω λαω σφοδρα και απεστραφη ονειδισμος εθνων58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.
και εστησεν ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου και πασα η εκκλησια ισραηλ ινα αγωνται αι ημεραι του εγκαινισμου του θυσιαστηριου εν τοις καιροις αυτων ενιαυτον κατ' ενιαυτον ημερας οκτω απο της πεμπτης και εικαδος του μηνος χασελευ μετ' ευφροσυνης και χαρας59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.
και ωκοδομησαν εν τω καιρω εκεινω το ορος σιων κυκλοθεν τειχη υψηλα και πυργους οχυρους μηποτε παραγενηθεντα τα εθνη καταπατησωσιν αυτα ως εποιησαν το προτερον60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.
και απεταξεν εκει δυναμιν τηρειν αυτο και ωχυρωσεν αυτο τηρειν την βαιθσουραν του εχειν τον λαον οχυρωμα κατα προσωπον της ιδουμαιας61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.
