1 For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:	1 Voi stessi, d’altronde, ben sapete, o fratelli, che la nostra venuta tra voi non è stata vana,
2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.	2 ma dopo aver subito, come sapete, sofferenze e oltraggi a Filippi, traeemmo dal nostro Dio l’ardire di predicarvi il suo evangelo pure in mezzo a tante lotte.
3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:	3 Le nostre esortazioni non sono ispirate da errore o da motivi indegni o da inganno.
4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.	4 Come ci è stato affidato da Dio che ce ne ha giudicati degni, predichiamo l’evangelo non per piacere agli uomini, ma a Dio che scruta i nostri cuori.
5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:	5 Mai, infatti, come ben sapete, abbiamo avuto parole adulatorie, mai uno scopo recondito di cupidigia, e Dio ce ne è testimone.
6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.	6 Mai cercammo la considerazione umana, vostra o altrui.
7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:	7 Pur potendo far sentire l’autorità di apostoli di Cristo, ci siamo comportati in mezzo a voi con dolcezza, come una madre che circonda d’amore e di cure i propri nati.
8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.	8 Nella nostra tenerezza per voi avremmo amato donarvi non soltanto l’evangelo di Dio, mi ancora la nostra vita, tanto ci eravate cari!
9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.	9 Ricordate infatti, o fratelli, il nostro lavoro, l’ardua nostra fatica: vi predicammo l’evangelo di Dio lavorando giorno e notte per non essere a cari di nessuno di voi.
10 Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:	10 Voi siete testimoni con Dio di quanto pia, giusta e irreprensibile sia stata la nostra condotta verso voi che credete.
11 As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,	11 Ben lo sapete: come fa un padre per i suoi figli,
12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.	12 abbiamo esortato incoraggiato e scongiurato ciascuno di voi a condurre una vita degna di Dio che vi ha chiamati al suo regno e alla sua gloria.
13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.	13 E per questo, anche noi incessantemente rendiamo grazie a Dio, che nel ricevere la parola di Dio, da noi predicata, l’accoglieste non come parola umana ma, qual è in realtà, come parola di Dio, che esercita la sua potenza in voi credenti.
14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:	14 Voi infatti, o fratelli, siete divenuti gli emuli delle Chiese di Dio che sono in Giudea, nel Cristo Gesù; chè avete sofferto anche voi, da parte dei vostri compatrioti, le stesse pene che patirono essi da parte dei Giudei,
15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:	15 i quali uccisero il Signore Gesù e i profeti, e ferocemente, da uomini a Dio spiacenti e nemici del genere umano, hanno perseguitato noi.
16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.	16 Essi, impedendoci di predicare ai pagani per salvarli, colmano sempre più la misura dei loro peccati. Ma l'ira di Dio è ormai su di essi totale e definitiva.
17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.	17 Quanto a noi, o fratelli, separati da voi per breve tempo col corpo, non col cuore, ci demmo tanto maggior premura di rivedervi, desiderandolo ardentemente;
18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.	18 e decidemmo infatti di venire da voi, e io Paolo più volte, ma Satana ce lo impedì.
19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?	19 Chi infatti è la nostra speranza, la nostra gioia, la nostra corona di cui saremo fieri dinanzi al Signore Gesù, alla sua venuta, se non voi?
20 For ye are our glory and joy.	20 Sì, voi siete la nostra gloria e la nostra gioia.
