Acts of the Apostles 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.	1 In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue together and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks came to believe,
2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.	2 although the disbelieving Jews stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers.
3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.	3 So they stayed for a considerable period, speaking out boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the word about his grace by granting signs and wonders to occur through their hands.
4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.	4 The people of the city were divided: some were with the Jews; others, with the apostles.
5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,	5 When there was an attempt by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone them,
6 They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:	6 they realized it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside,
7 And there they preached the gospel.	7 where they continued to proclaim the good news.
8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:	8 At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked.
9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,	9 He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed,
10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.	10 and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet." He jumped up and began to walk about.
11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.	11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they cried out in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in human form."
12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.	12 They called Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes," because he was the chief speaker.
13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.	13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice.
14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,	14 The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,
15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:	15 "Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, 'who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.'
16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.	16 In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways;
17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.	17 yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts."
18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.	18 Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.
19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.	19 However, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.
20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.	20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. On the following day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,	21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch.
22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.	22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God."
23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.	23 They appointed presbyters for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith.
24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.	24 Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:	25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia.
26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.	26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished.
27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.	27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
28 And there they abode long time with the disciples.	28 Then they spent no little time with the disciples.
