DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And rising up from thence, he cometh into the coasts of Judea beyond the Jordan: and the multitudes flock to him again. And as he was accustomed, he taught them again.1 He set out from there and went into the district of Judea (and) across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them.
And the Pharisees coming to him asked him: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.2 The Pharisees approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him.
But he answering, saith to them: What did Moses command you?3 He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?"
Who said: Moses permitted to write a bill of divorce, and to put her away.4 They replied, "Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her."
To whom Jesus answering, said: Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you that precept.5 But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment.
But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.6 But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.
For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother; and shall cleave to his wife.7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife),
And they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh.8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.9 Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate."
And in the house again his disciples asked him concerning the same thing.10 In the house the disciples again questioned him about this.
And he saith to them: Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another, committeth adultery against her.11 He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;
And if the wife shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."
And they brought to him young children, that he might touch them. And the disciples rebuked them that brought them.13 And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
Whom when Jesus saw, he was much displeased, and saith to them: Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God.14 When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall not enter into it.15 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it."
And embracing them, and laying his hands upon them, he blessed them.16 Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.
And when he was gone forth into the way, a certain man running up and kneeling before him, asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting?17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
And Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? None is good but one, that is God.18 Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, bear not false witness, do no fraud, honour thy father and mother.19 You know the commandments: 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.'"
But he answering, said to him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth.20 He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."
And Jesus looking on him, loved him, and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
Who being struck sad at that saying, went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
And Jesus looking round about, saith to his disciples: How hardly shall they that have riches, enter into the kingdom of God!23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"
And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, saith to them: Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches, to enter into the kingdom of God?24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.25 It is easier for a camel to pass through (the) eye of (a) needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
Who wondered the more, saying among themselves: Who then can be saved?26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?"
And Jesus looking on them, saith: With men it is impossible; but not with God: for all things are possible with God.27 Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God."
And Peter began to say unto him: Behold, we have left all things, and have followed thee.28 Peter began to say to him, "We have given up everything and followed you."
Jesus answering, said: Amen I say to you, there is no man who hath left house or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my sake and for the gospel,29 Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel
Who shall not receive an hundred times as much, now in this time; houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions: and in the world to come life everlasting.30 who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.
But many that are first, shall be last: and the last, first.31 But many that are first will be last, and (the) last will be first."
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem: and Jesus went before them, and they were astonished; and following were afraid. And taking again the twelve, he began to tell them the things that should befall him.32 They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him.
Saying: Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the scribes and ancients, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles.33 "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles
And they shall mock him, and spit on him, and scourge him, and kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.34 who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise."
And James and John the sons of Zebedee, come to him, saying: Master, we desire that whatsoever we shall ask, thou wouldst do it for us:35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
But he said to them: What would you that I should do for you?36 He replied, "What do you wish (me) to do for you?"
And they said: Grant to us, that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.37 They answered him, "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left."
And Jesus said to them: You know not what you ask. Can you drink of the chalice that I drink of: or be baptized with the baptism wherewith I am baptized?38 Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
But they said to him: We can. And Jesus saith to them: You shall indeed drink of the chalice that I drink of: and with the baptism wherewith I am baptized, you shall be baptized.39 They said to him, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
But to sit on my right hand, or on my left, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared.40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared."
And the ten hearing it, began to be much displeased at James and John.41 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John.
But Jesus calling them, saith to them: You know that they who seem to rule over the Gentiles, lord it over them: and their princes have power over them.42 Jesus summoned them and said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it is not so among you: but whosoever will be greater, shall be your minister.43 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;
And whosoever will be first among you, shall be the servant of all.44 whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.
For the Son of man also is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.45 For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."
And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho, with his disciples, and a very great multitude, Bartimeus the blind man, the son of Timeus, sat by the way side begging.46 They came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.
Who when he had heard, that it was Jesus of Nazareth, began to cry out, and to say: Jesus son of David, have mercy on me.47 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
And many rebuked him, that he might hold his peace; but he cried a great deal the more: Son of David, have mercy on me.48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me."
And Jesus, standing still, commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying to him: Be of better comfort: arise, he calleth thee.49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, he is calling you."
Who casting off his garment leaped up, and came to him.50 He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
And Jesus answering, said to him: What wilt thou that I should do to thee? And the blind man said to him: Rabboni, that I may see.51 Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
And Jesus saith to him: Go thy way, thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he saw, and followed him in the way.52 Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.
