DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And having called his twelve disciples together, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases, and all manner of infirmities.1 Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.
And the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother,2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus,3 Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.4 Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
These twelve Jesus sent: commanding them, saying: Go ye not into the way of the Gentiles, and into the city of the Samaritans enter ye not.5 Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, "Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
But go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6 Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
And going, preach, saying: The kingdom of heaven is at hand.7 As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely have you received, freely give.8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not possess gold, nor silver, nor money in your purses:9 Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
Nor scrip for your journey, nor two coats, nor shoes, nor a staff; for the workman is worthy of his meat.10 no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep.
And into whatsoever city or town you shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there abide till you go thence.11 Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave.
And when you come into the house, salute it, saying: Peace be to this house.12 As you enter a house, wish it peace.
And if that house be worthy, your peace shall come upon it; but if it be not worthy, your peace shall return to you.13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet.14 Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words--go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.15 Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves.16 "Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.17 But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues,
And you shall be brought before governors, and before kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles:18 and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.
But when they shall deliver you up, take no thought how or what to speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak.19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.20 For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
The brother also shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the son: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall put them to death.21 Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.22 You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
And when they shall persecute you in this city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you shall not finish all the cities of Israel, till the Son of man come.23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
The disciple is not above the master, nor the servant above his lord.24 No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master.
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the goodman of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household?25 It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household!
Therefore fear them not. For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed: nor hid, that shall not be known.26 "Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.
That which I tell you in the dark, speak ye in the light: and that which you hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops.27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.29 Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.30 Even all the hairs of your head are counted.
Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.31 So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Every one therefore that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.32 Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.33 But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.
Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword.34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword.
For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.35 For I have come to set a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
And as a man's enemies shall be they of his own household.36 and one's enemies will be those of his household.'
He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.37 "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for me, shall find it.39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
He that receiveth you, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.40 "Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man.41 Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man's reward.
And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.42 And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple--amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward."
