DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
Make thee two trumpets of beaten silver, wherewith thou mayest call together the multitude when the camp is to be removed.2 'Make yourself two trumpets; make them of beaten silver, so that you can use them for summoningthe community, and for sounding the order to break camp.
And when thou shalt sound the trumpets, all the multitude shall gather unto thee to the door of the tabernacle of the covenant.3 Whenever they are sounded, the whole community must gather round you, at the entrance to theTent of Meeting.
If thou sound but once, the princes and the heads of the multitude of Israel shall come to thee.4 But if only one trumpet is sounded, then only the leaders, the heads of Israel's thousands, mustgather round you.
But if the sound of the trumpets be longer, and with interruptions, they that are on the east side, shall first go forward.5 'When the trumpet blast is accompanied by a battle cry, the encampments pitched to the east wil setout.
And at the second sounding and like noise of the trumpet, they who lie on the south side shall take up their tents. And after this manner shall the rest do, when the trumpets shall sound for a march.6 At the second blast accompanied by a battle cry, the encampments pitched to the south wil set out.For breaking camp, the trumpet blast wil be accompanied by a battle cry,
But when the people is to be gathered together, the sound of the trumpets shall be plain, and they shall not make a broken sound.7 but for assembling the community the trumpets will be sounded without battle cry.
And the sons of Aaron the priest shall sound the trumpets: and this shall be an ordinance for ever in your generations.8 The Aaronite priests wil sound the trumpets; this is a perpetual decree for you and your descendants.
If you go forth to war out of your land against the enemies that fight against you, you shall sound aloud with the trumpets, and there shall be a remembrance of you before the Lord your God, that you may be delivered out of the hands of your enemies.9 'When in your country you go to war against an enemy who is oppressing you, you will soundtrumpets with a battle cry, and Yahweh your God wil remember you, and you wil be delivered from yourenemies.
If at any time you shall have a banquet, end on your festival days, and on the first days of your months, you shall sound the trumpets over the holocausts, and the sacrifices of peace offerings, that they may be to you for a remembrance of your God. I am the Lord your God.10 At your festivals, solemnities and new-moon feasts, you will sound the trumpets over your burntofferings and communion sacrifices, so that they recal you to the remembrance of your God. I am Yahweh yourGod.'
The second year, in the second month, the twentieth day of the month, the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle of the covenant.11 In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud rose fromwhere the Dwel ing of the Testimony was,
And the children of Israel marched by their troops from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Pharan.12 and the Israelites set out, in marching order, from the desert of Sinai. The cloud came to rest in thedesert of Paran.
And the first went forward according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.13 These were the men who set out in the vanguard, at Yahweh's order through Moses:
The sons of Juda by their troops: whose prince was Nahasson the son of Aminadab.14 first went the standard of the camp of the Judahites and their units, with Nahshon son ofAmminadab commanding that contingent;
In the tribe of the sons of Issachar, the prince was Nathanael the son of Suar.15 Nethanel son of Zuar commanding the tribal contingent of the Issacharites;
In the tribe of Zabulon, the prince was Eliab the son of Helon.16 and Eliab son of Helon commanding the tribal contingent of the Zebulunites.
And the tabernacle was taken down, and the sons of Gerson and Merari set forward, bearing it.17 The Dwel ing was then dismantled and the Gershonites and Merarites set out, carrying the Dwel ing.
And the sons of Ruben also marched, by their troops and ranks, whose prince was Helisur the son of Sedeur.18 Then came the standard of the camp of the Reubenites and their units, with Elizur son of Shedeurcommanding that contingent;
And in the tribe of Simeon, the prince was Salamiel the son of Surisaddai.19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai commanding the tribal contingent of the Simeonites;
And in the tribe of Cad, the prince was Eliasaph the son of Duel.20 and Eliasaph son of Reuel commanding the tribal contingent of the Gadites.
Then the Caathites also marched carrying the sanctuary. So long was the tabernacle carried, till they same to the place of setting it up.21 Then came the Kohathites carrying the sanctuary (the Dwel ing was erected before they arrived).
The sons of Ephraim also moved their camp by their troops, in whose army the prince was Elisama the son of Ammiud.22 Then came the standard of the camp of the Ephraimites and their units, with Elishama son ofAmmihud commanding that contingent;
And in the tribe of the sons of Manasses, the prince was Gamaliel the son of Phadassur.23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur commanding the tribal contingent of the Manassehites;
And in the tribe of Benjamin, the prince was Abidan the son of Gedeon.24 and Abidan son of Gideoni commanding the tribal contingent of the Benjaminites.
The last of all the camp marched the sons of Dan by their troops, in whose army the prince was Ahiezer the son of Ammisaddai.25 Last of al , the rearguard of al the camps, came the standard of the camp of the Danites and theirunits, with Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai commanding that contingent;
And in the tribe of the sons of Aser, the prince was Phegiel the son of Ochran.26 Pagiel son of Ochran commanding the tribal contingent of the Asherites;
And in the tribe of the sons of Nephtali, the prince was Ahira the son of Enan.27 and Ahira son of Enan commanding the tribal contingent of the Naphtalites.
This was the order of the camps, and marches of the children of Israel by their troops, when they set forward.28 Such was the order of march for the Israelites, unit by unit. So they set out.
And Moses said to Hobab the son of Raguel the Madianite, his kinsman: We are going towards the place which the Lord will give us: come with us, that we may do thee good : for the Lord hath promised good things to Israel.29 Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, his father-in-law, 'We are setting out for the countryof which Yahweh has said: I shall give it to you. Come with us, and we wil treat you wel , for Yahweh haspromised good things for Israel.'
But he answered him: I will not go with thee, but I will return to my country, wherein I was born.30 'I wil not come with you,' he replied, 'but shal go to my own country and kin.'
And he said: Do not leave us: for thou knowest in what places we should encamp in the wilderness, and thou shalt be our guide.31 'Do not leave us,' Moses said, 'for you know where we can camp in the desert, and so you will beour eyes.
And if thou comest with us, we will give thee what is the best of the riches which the Lord shall deliver to us.32 If you come with us, we shal share with you whatever blessings Yahweh gives us.'
So they marched from the mount of the Lord three days' journey, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them, for three days providing a place for the camp.33 They set out from Yahweh's mountain and travel ed for three days, while the ark of the covenant ofYahweh preceded them on the three-day journey, searching out a place for them to halt.
The cloud also of the Lord was over them by day when they marched.34 In the daytime, Yahweh's cloud was over them, once they had broken camp.
And when the ark was lifted up, Moses said: Arise, O Lord, and let thy enemies be scattered, and let them that hate thee, flee from before thy face.35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say: Rise, Yahweh, may your enemies be scattered andthose who hate you flee at your approach!
And when it was set down, he said: Return, O Lord, to the multitude of the host of Israel.36 And when it halted, he would say: Come back, Yahweh, to the countless thousands of Israel!
