Lamentations 5

DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: consider and behold our reproach.1 Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our disgrace:
Our inheritance is turned to aliens: our houses to strangers.2 Our inherited lands have been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
We are become orphans without a father: our mothers are as widows.3 We have become orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers.
We have drunk our water for money: we have bought our wood.4 The water we drink we must buy, for our own wood we must pay.
We were dragged by the necks, we were weary and no rest was given us.5 On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.
We have given our hand to Egypt, and to the Assyrians, that we might be satisfied with bread.6 To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.
Our fathers have sinned, and are not: and we have borne their iniquities.7 Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.
Servants have ruled over us: there was none to redeem us out of their hand.8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hands.
We fetched our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the desert.9 At the peril of our lives we bring in our sustenance, in the face of the desert heat;
Our skin was burnt as an oven, by reason of the violence of the famine.10 Our skin is shriveled up, as though by a furnace, with the searing blasts of famine.
They oppressed the women in Sion, and the virgins in the cities of Juda.11 The wives in Zion were ravished by the enemy, the maidens in the cities of Judah;
The princes were hanged up by their hand: they did not respect the persons of the ancient.12 Princes were gibbeted by them, elders shown no respect.
They abused the young men indecently: and the children fell under the wood.13 The youths carry the millstones, boys stagger under their loads of wood;
The ancients have ceased from the gates: the young men from the choir of the singers.14 The old men have abandoned the gate, the young men their music.
The joy of our heart is ceased, our dancing is turned into mourning.15 The joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned into mourning;
The crown is fallen from our head woe to us, because we have sinned.16 The garlands have fallen from our heads: woe to us, for we have sinned!
Therefore is our heart sorrowful, therefore are our eyes become dim,17 Over this our hearts are sick, at this our eyes grow dim:
For mount Sion, because it is destroyed, foxes have walked upon it.18 That Mount Zion should be desolate, with jackals roaming there!
But thou, O Lord, shalt remain for ever, thy throne from generation to generation.19 You, O LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne stands from age to age.
Why wilt thou forget us for ever? why wilt thou forsake us for a long time?20 Why, then, should you forget us, abandon us so long a time?
Convert us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be converted: renew our days, as from the beginning.21 Lead us back to you, O LORD, that we may be restored: give us anew such days as we had of old.
But thou hast utterly rejected us, thou art exceedingly angry against us.22 For now you have indeed rejected us, and in full measure turned your wrath against us.
