Sirach 48

DOUAI-RHEIMS	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 the Lord the Almighty, and he gave strength in his right hand, to take away the mighty warrior, and to set up the horn of his nation.	1 Suas palavras queimavam como uma tocha ardente. Elias, o profeta, levantou-se em breve como um fogo.
2 And as the fat taken away from the flesh, so was David chosen from among the children of Israel.	2 Ele fez vir a fome sobre o povo (de Israel): foram reduzidos a um punhado por tê-lo irritado com sua inveja, pois não podiam suportar os preceitos do Senhor.
3 He played with lions as with lambs: and with bears he did in like manner as with the lambs of the flock, in his youth.	3 Com a palavra do Senhor ele fechou o céu, e dele fez cair fogo por três vezes.
4 Did not he kill the giant, and take away reproach from his people?	4 Quão glorioso te tornaste, Elias, por teus prodígios! Quem pode gloriar-se de ser como tu?
5 In lifting up his hand, with the stone in the sling he beat down the boasting of Goliath:	5 Tu que fizeste sair um morto do seio da morte, e o arrancaste da região dos mortos pela palavra do Senhor; 6. tu que lançaste os reis na ruína, que desfizeste sem dificuldade o seu poder, que fizeste cair de seu leito homens gloriosos.
6 For he called upoI
7 So in ten thousand did he glorify him, and praised him in the blessings of the Lord, in offering to him a crown of glory:	7 Tu que ouviste no Sinai o julgamento do Senhor, e no monte Horeb os decretos de sua vingança.
8 For he destroyed the enemies on every side, and extirpated the Philistines the adversaries unto this day: he broke their horn for ever.	8 Tu que sagraste reis para a penitência, e estabeleceste profetas para te sucederem.
9 In all his works he gave thanks to the holy one, and to the most High, with words of glory.	9 Tu que foste arrebatado num tubilhão de fogo, num carro puxado por cavalos ardentes.
10 With his whole heart he praised the Lord, and loved God that made him: and he gave him power against his enemies:	10 Tu que foste escolhido pelos decretos dos tempos para amenizar a cólera do Senhor, reconciliar os corações dos pais com os filhos, e restabelecer as tribos de Jacó.
11 And he set singers before the altar, and by their voices he made sweet melody.	11 Bem-aventurados os que te conheceram, e foram honrados com a tua amizade!
12 And to the festivals he added beauty, and set in order the solemn times even to the end of his life, that they should praise the holy name of the Lord, and magnify the holiness of God in the morning.	12 Pois, quanto a nós, só vivemos durante esta vida, e depois da morte, nem mesmo nosso nome nos sobreviverá.
13 The Lord took away his sine, and exalted his horn for ever: and he gave him a covenant of the kingdom, and a throne of glory in Israel.	13 Elias foi então arrebatado em um turbilhão, mas seu espírito permaneceu em Eliseu. Nunca em sua vida teve Eliseu medo de um príncipe; ninguém o dominou pelo poder.
14 After him arose up a wise son, and for his sake he cast down all the power of the enemies.	14 Nada houve que o pudesse vencer: seu corpo, mesmo depois da morte, fez profecias.
15 Solomon reigned in days of peace, and God brought all his enemies under him, that he might build a house in his name, and prepare a sanctuary for ever: O how wise wast thou in thy youth!	15 Durante a vaida fez prodígios, depois da morte fez milagres.
16 And thou wast filled as a river with wisdom, and thy soul covered the earth.	16 E, apesar de tudo isto, o povo não fez penitência, não se afastou dos seus pecados, até que foi expulso de sua terra, e espalhado por todo o mundo.
17 And thou didst multiply riddles in parables: thy name went abroad to the islands far off, and thou wast beloved in thy peace.	17 Só ficou um resto do povo, um príncipe da casa de Davi.
18 The countries wondered at thee for thy canticles, and proverbs, and parables, and interpretations,	18 Alguns deles fizeram o que é do agrado de Deus; os outros, porém, multiplicaram os seus pecados.
19 And at the name of the Lord God, whose surname is, God of Israel.	19 Ezequias fortificou a sua cidade, trazendo água até o centro; abriu com ferro um rochedo, e construiu um poço para as águas.
20 Thou didst gather gold as copper, and didst multiply silver as lead,	20 Durante o seu reinado veio Senaquerib, que enviou Rabsaces, o qual levantou a sua mão contra eles; ele estendeu a sua mão contra Sião, ensoberbecendo-se com seu poder.
21 And thou didst bow thyself to women: and by thy body thou wast brought under subjection.	21 Foi então que os seus corações e as suas mãos desfaleceram: sentiram dores como a parturiente.
22 Thou hast stained thy glory, and defiled thy seed so as to bring wrath upon thy children, and to have thy folly kindled,	22 Invocaram o Senhor misericordioso, levantando para o céu as suas mãos estendidas. E o Santo, o Senhor Deus, ouviu logo a sua voz:
23 That thou shouldst make the kingdom to be divided, and out of Ephraim a rebellious kingdom to rule.	23 não se recordou dos seus pecados, não os entregou aos seus inimigos, mas purificou-os pela mão de Isaías, seu santo profeta.
24 But God will not leave off his mercy, and he will not destroy, nor abolish his own works, neither will he out up by the roots the offspring of his elect: and he will not utterly take away the seed of him that loveth the Lord.	24 Derrubou o acampamento dos assírios, e o anjo do Senhor os desbaratou.
25 Wherefore he gave a remnant to Jacob, and to David of the same stock.	25 Pois Ezequias fez o que era agradável a Deus: caminhou corajosamente pelas pegadas de Davi, seu pai, assim como lhe havia recomendado Isaías, o grande profeta, fiel aos olhos do Senhor.
26 And Solomon had an end with his fathers.	26 Um dia o sol retrocedeu, e (o profeta) prolongou a vida do rei.
27 And he left behind him of his seed, the folly of the nation,	27 Por uma poderosa inspiração ele viu o fim dos tempos, e consolou aqueles que choravam em Sião;
28 Even Roboam that had little wisdom, who turned away the people through his counsel:	28 ele anunciou o futuro até o fim dos tempos, assim como as coisas ocultas antes que se cumprissem.
29 And Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who caused Israel to sin, and shewed Ephraim the way of sin, and their sins were multiplied exceedingly.
30 They removed them far away from their land.
31 And they sought out all iniquities, till vengeance came upon them, and put an end to all their sine.
