1 Wisdom is better than strength, and a wise man is better than a strong man.	1 Ô rois, écoutez donc et comprenez! Laissez-vous instruire, vous qui gouvernez les terres lointaines!
2 Hear therefore, ye kings, and understand: learn, ye that are judges of the ends of the earth.	2 Prêtez l’oreille, vous qui commandez à la multitude, qui êtes si fiers du grand nombre de vos peuples!
3 Give ear, you that rule the people, and that please yourselves in multitudes of nations:	3 Car c’est le Seigneur qui vous a donné la puissance, votre pouvoir vient du Très-Haut; c’est lui qui examinera votre conduite et vérifiera vos intentions.
4 For power is given you by the Lord, and strength by the most High, who will examine your works, and search out your thoughts:	4 Vous êtes les représentants de son pouvoir royal; si donc vous n’avez pas jugé selon la justice, ni observé sa loi, ni marché selon la volonté de Dieu,
5 Because being ministers of his kingdom, you have not judged rightly, nor kept the law of justice, nor walked according to the will of God.	5 il s’en prendra à vous brusquement, de façon terrifiante. Car la sentence est rigoureuse pour les gens haut placés.
6 Horribly and speedily will he appear to you: for a most severe judgment shall be for them that bear rule.	6 On a pitié des petits et on leur pardonne, mais les puissants seront strictement contrôlés.
7 For to him that is little, mercy is granted: but the mighty shall be mightily tormented.	7 Le Maître universel ne redoute personne, et les dignités humaines ne l’impressionnent pas: petits et grands, c’est lui qui les a faits; il prend le même soin de tous,
8 For God will not except any man's person, neither will he stand in awe of any man's greatness: for he made the little and the great, and he hath equally care of all.	8 mais les puissants seront examinés plus à fond.
9 But a greater punishment is ready for the more mighty.	9 C’est donc à vous, princes, que je m’adresse, pour que vous appreniez la sagesse et ne tombiez pas.
10 To you, therefore, O kings, are these my words, that you may learn wisdom, and not fall from it.	10 Car ceux qui observent saintement les lois saintes deviendront saints eux-mêmes, et ceux qui les auront approfondies y trouveront leur défense.
11 For they that have kept just things justly, shall be justified: and they that have learned these things, shall find what to answer.	11 Soyez donc avides de mes paroles et recherchez-les: elles vous instruiront.
12 Covet ye therefore my words, and love them, and you shall have instruction.	12 La Sagesse est lumière et ne se flétrit pas; elle se montre volontiers à ceux qui l’aiment, elle se laisse trouver par ceux qui la recherchent.
13 Wisdom is glorious, and never fadeth away, and is easily seen by them that love her, and is found by them that seek her.	13 Elle va à la rencontre de ceux qui désirent la connaître;
14 She preventeth them that covet her, so that she first sheweth herself unto them.	14 celui qui pour elle s’est levé tôt n’aura guère à peiner: il la trouvera assise à sa porte.
15 He that awaketh early to seek her, shall not labour: for he shall find her sitting at his door.	15 Se passionner pour elle est la meilleure des ambitions, celui qui aura veillé à cause d’elle sera bientôt sans soucis.
16 To think therefore upon her, is perfect understanding: and he that watcheth for her, shall quickly be secure.	16 Elle va elle-même de tous côtés à la recherche de ceux qui sont dignes d’elle; elle se montre avec bienveillance sur leurs chemins, elle vient les retrouver dans toutes leurs pensées.
17 For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her, and she sheweth herself to them cheerfully in the ways, and meeteth them with all providence.	17 Le commencement de la sagesse est un vrai désir de se former; chercher l’instruction, c’est l’aimer.
18 For the beginning of her is the most true desire of discipline.	18 Qui l’aime observe ses lois, qui obéit à ses lois s’assure la vie qui ne dépérit pas,
19 And the care of discipline is love: and love is the keeping of her laws: and the keeping of her laws is the firm foundation of incorruption:	19 et la vie qui ne dépérit pas nous met tout près de Dieu.
20 And incorruption bringeth near to God.	20 Voilà comment la sagesse conduit à la royauté!
21 Therefore the desire of wisdom bringeth to the everlasting kingdom.	21 Vous donc, souverains des peuples, si vous appréciez le trône et les insignes du pouvoir, honorez la Sagesse, et vous régnerez pour toujours.
22 If then your delight be in thrones, and sceptres, O ye kings of the people, love wisdom, that you may reign for ever.	22 Je vais vous dire ce qu’est la Sagesse et quelle est son origine, je ne vous cacherai aucun secret. Je veux la suivre depuis ses débuts et vous exposer clairement, sans m’écarter de la vérité, tout ce qu’on en peut savoir.
23 Love the light of wisdom, all ye that bear rule over peoples.	23 Car ici, pas de secrets à garder jalousement: cela n’aurait rien à voir avec la Sagesse.
24 Now what wisdom is, and what was her origin, I will declare: and I will not hide from you the mysteries of God, but will seek her out from the beginning of her birth, and bring the knowledge of her to light, and will not pass over the truth:	24 Si les sages se multipliaient, ce serait le salut du monde, car un roi intelligent fait la prospérité de son peuple.
25 Neither will I go with consuming envy: for such a man shall not be partaker of wisdom.	25 Instruisez-vous donc grâce à mes paroles, et vous y trouverez du profit.
26 Now the multitude of the wise is the welfare of the whole world: and a wise king is the upholding of the people.
27 Receive therefore instruction by my words, and it shall be profitable to you.
