1 Now when Mardochai had heard these things, he rent his garments, and put on sackcloth, strewing ashes on his head: and he cried with a loud voice in the street in the midst of the city, shewing the anguish of his mind.	1 E quando Mardocheo udi (e intese) questo ( ch' era fatto contro a' Giudei), si stracciò tutti i panni i quali aveva in dosso, e gittossi cenere in capo, e vestissi di sacco; e gridava tanto forte nella piazza che si udiva insino al palagio del re, dimostrando la grande amaritudine che avea nel suo cuore.
2 And he came lamenting in this manner even to the gate of the palace: for no one clothed with sackcloth might enter the king's court.	2 Nella corte del re non era lecito d' entrare alcuno uomo che fosse vestito di sacco.
3 And in all provinces, towns, and places, to which the king's cruel edict was come, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, wailing, and weeping, many using sackcloth and ashes for their bed.	3 E in ogni provincia [e in] cittade e in castello e in villa e in ogni parte era già isparta questa novella e questa sentenza; onde che i Giudei ne faceano grande pianto con grandi digiuni, vestendosi di sacco.
4 Then Esther's maids and her eunuchs went in, and told her. And when she heard it she was in a consternation: and she sent a garment, to clothe him, and to take away the sackcloth: but he would not receive it.	4 Le damigelle e gli eunuchi della regina entrorono ad Ester, e sì le dissono queste cose (e come questo comandamento era fatto sopra i Giudei). Udendo la regina questo, tristossi molto; e gittate le vestimenta, volsesi vestire di sacco, ma non le fu dato.
5 And she called for Athach the eunuch, whom the king had appointed to attend upon her, and she commanded him to go to Mardochai, and learn of him why he did this.	5 Ed ella prese Atac eunuco, il quale il re le avea dato per sua guardia; e mandollo a Mardocheo per sapere perchè egli gridava.
6 And Athach going out went to Mardochai, who was standing in the street of the city, before the palace gate:	6 E incontanente Atac andò a Mardocheo, trovollo (gridare) nella piazza dinanzi alla porta del palagio.
7 And Mardochai told him all that had happened, how Aman had promised to pay money into the king's treasures, to have the Jews destroyed.	7 E Mardocheo gli disse ogni cosa che era intervenuto, e come Aman (per guadagnare e per invidia) volea fare morire tutto il popolo Giudeo, e avea promesso al re una quantità di ariento per lo suo tesoro.
8 He gave him also a copy of the edict which was hanging up in Susan, that he should shew it to the queen, and admonish her to go in to the king, and to entreat him for her people.	8 E mandolle lo esempio scritto, ch' era confitto dinanzi alla porta del re, acciò ch' ella lo intendesse; e dovesse dire alla regina, che ella incontanente dovesse andare al re, e pregasselo per lo popolo suo.
9 And Athach went back and told Esther all that Mardochai had said.	9 E tornò Atac alla regina, e disse tutto ciò che Mardocheo li avea detto ( ch' egli dicesse alla regina, che 'l dicesse al re).
10 She answered him, and bade him say to Mardochai:	10 Ed ella gli rispose; e ordinò che fosse detto a Mardocheo,
11 ,11All the king's servants, and all the provinces that are under his dominion, know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, cometh into the king's inner court, who is not called for, is immediately to be put to death without any delay: except the king shall hold out the golden sceptre to him, in token of clemency, that so he may live. How then can I go in to the king, who for these thirty days now have not been called unto him?	11 che niuno uomo nè donna non puote entrare al re, se egli nol fa chiamare, a pena della testa; e incontanente sì gli è tagliata la testa (senza dimora); ovver che gli desse il re la verga dell' oro per segno d'amore, e allora non gli è fatto male. E come potrò io andare al re, che già fa XXX dì ch' egli non m' ha fatto chiamare?
12 And when Mardochai had heard this,	12 Udendo Mardocheo il detto della regina,
13 He sent word to Esther again, saying: Think not that thou mayst save thy life only, because thou art in the king a house, more than all the Jews:	13 mandolle a dire: non credere, Ester, campare, perchè tu sei (regina e) in casa del re oltra tutti i Giudei.
14 For if thou wilt now hold thy peace, the Jews shall be delivered by some other occasion: and thou, and thy father's house shall perish. And who knoweth whether thou art not therefore come to the kingdom, that thou mightest be ready in such a time as this?	14 Io hoe speranza in Dio, che se tu questo tacerai, che i Giudei per altro modo saranno liberati; ma tu (e chi per te sarà) e tutta la casa del tuo padre morirete. Che sai tu, se Iddio ti ha fatta venire in questo regno, acciò che (per ora) in questo punto aiuti il popolo suo?
15 And again Esther sent to Mardochai in these words:	15 Allora Ester (udendo Mardocheo adirato) mandogli a dire,
16 Go, and gather together all the Jews whom thou shalt find in Susan, and pray ye for me. Neither eat nor drink for three days and three nights: and I with my handmaids will fast in like manner, and then I will go in to the king, against the law, not being called, and expose myself to death and to danger.	16 che dicesse a tutti i Giudei, ch' erano in Susa, che pregassero Iddio per lei, e che non mangiassero nè bevessero tre giorni [e tre notti]; ed ella e le sue cameriere il farebbero anco; e allora anderò al re, facendo contra il suo comandamento, però che non era chiamata, e metterommi alla morte.
17 So Mardochai went, and did all that Esther had commanded him.	17 E fece Mardocheo quello che la regina Ester gli comandò (e mandolli dicendo).
