1 Now when Mardochai had heard these things, he rent his garments, and put on sackcloth, strewing ashes on his head: and he cried with a loud voice in the street in the midst of the city, shewing the anguish of his mind.	1 Mardocheo seppe tutto quello che era stato fatto e si stracciò le vesti, si coprì di sacco e di cenere e uscì per la città emettendo lamenti profondi e amari.
2 And he came lamenting in this manner even to the gate of the palace: for no one clothed with sackcloth might enter the king's court.	2 Arrivò fino dirimpetto alla porta del re, perché non era permesso entrare nella porta del re vestiti di sacco.
3 And in all provinces, towns, and places, to which the king's cruel edict was come, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, wailing, and weeping, many using sackcloth and ashes for their bed.	3 In ogni provincia, dove arrivava l'ordine del re e il suo editto, si faceva gran lutto da parte degli Ebrei, si digiunava, si piangeva e si faceva lamento; molti si coprivano di sacco e di cenere.
4 Then Esther's maids and her eunuchs went in, and told her. And when she heard it she was in a consternation: and she sent a garment, to clothe him, and to take away the sackcloth: but he would not receive it.	4 Vennero anche le serve di Ester e i suoi eunuchi e la misero al corrente. La regina fu presa da grande angoscia; mandò vestiti a Mardocheo perché se ne rivestisse, togliendosi il sacco, ma egli non li accettò.
5 And she called for Athach the eunuch, whom the king had appointed to attend upon her, and she commanded him to go to Mardochai, and learn of him why he did this.	5 Chiamò allora Atàch, uno degli eunuchi del re che la serviva, ordinandogli di andare da Mardocheo per sapere che cosa succedeva e per quale ragione.
6 And Athach going out went to Mardochai, who was standing in the street of the city, before the palace gate:	6 Atàch andò da Mardocheo sulla piazza della città davanti alla porta del re,
7 And Mardochai told him all that had happened, how Aman had promised to pay money into the king's treasures, to have the Jews destroyed.	7 e Mardocheo lo informò di tutto quello che era successo e della somma di denaro che Aman aveva detto di versare nei tesori del re in cambio dello sterminio degli Ebrei;
8 He gave him also a copy of the edict which was hanging up in Susan, that he should shew it to the queen, and admonish her to go in to the king, and to entreat him for her people.	8 Le fece dire: "Ricordati dei giorni della tua miseria, quando fosti nutrita da me, perché Aman, il secondo dopo il re, ha parlato contro di noi per condurci a morte. Invoca il Signore e parla al re in nostro favore; salvaci dalla morte".
9 And Athach went back and told Esther all that Mardochai had said.	9 Atàch andò a riferire a Ester le parole di Mardocheo.
10 She answered him, and bade him say to Mardochai:	10 Ester gli ordinò di andare a dire a Mardocheo:
11 ,11All the king's servants, and all the provinces that are under his dominion, know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, cometh into the king's inner court, who is not called for, is immediately to be put to death without any delay: except the king shall hold out the golden sceptre to him, in token of clemency, that so he may live. How then can I go in to the king, who for these thirty days now have not been called unto him?	11 "Tutti i dipendenti del re e il popolo delle province sanno che chiunque vada dal re nella corte interna, senza essere stato chiamato, deve essere messo a morte, secondo la legge, a meno che il re stenda verso di lui lo scettro d'oro; in tal caso sarà salvo. Io non sono stata chiamata per andare dal re da trenta giorni".
12 And when Mardochai had heard this,	12 Riferirono a Mardocheo le parole di Ester e
13 He sent word to Esther again, saying: Think not that thou mayst save thy life only, because thou art in the king a house, more than all the Jews:	13 Mardocheo le fece rispondere: "Per l'anima tua! Non pensare che gli Ebrei della casa del re scamperanno allo sterminio degli altri Ebrei.
14 For if thou wilt now hold thy peace, the Jews shall be delivered by some other occasion: and thou, and thy father's house shall perish. And who knoweth whether thou art not therefore come to the kingdom, that thou mightest be ready in such a time as this?	14 Se tu ora tacerai, liberazione e salvezza verranno per gli Ebrei da qualche altro luogo, ma tu e la casa di tuo padre perirete. E chi può sapere se è proprio per questa occasione che tu sei pervenuta alla regalità?".
15 And again Esther sent to Mardochai in these words:	15 Ester disse di rispondere a Mardocheo:
16 Go, and gather together all the Jews whom thou shalt find in Susan, and pray ye for me. Neither eat nor drink for three days and three nights: and I with my handmaids will fast in like manner, and then I will go in to the king, against the law, not being called, and expose myself to death and to danger.	16 "Va', raduna tutti gli Ebrei che si trovano a Susa e digiunate per me; non mangiate né bevete per tre giorni, né di notte né di giorno; anch'io e le mie serve digiuneremo. Così io andrò dal re, contrariamente alla legge, e se bisognerà morire, morirò".
17 So Mardochai went, and did all that Esther had commanded him.	17 O Dio, più di tutti potente, ascolta la voce di chi non ha speranza, liberaci dalle mani dei malvagi e liberami dalla paura".
