1 And when they were gone, Judith went into her oratory: and putting on haircloth, laid ashes on her head: and falling down prostrate before the Lord, she cried to the Lord, saying:	1 - Partiti che furono quelli. Giuditta rientrò nel suo oratorio; vestitasi di cilizio si sparse di cenere il capo, e prostratasi innanzi al Signore alzò a lui la voce dicendo:
2 O Lord God of my father Simeon, who gavest him a sword to execute vengeance against strangers, who had defiled by their uncleanness, and uncovered the virgin unto confusion:	2 « Signore Dio di Simeon mio padre, che gli desti la spada per castigar gli stranieri i quali nella loro immondezza avevan violata ed oltraggiata con sua confusione una vergine;
3 And who gavest their wives to he made a prey, and their daughters into captivity: and all their spoils to be divided to thy servants, who were zealous with thy zeal: assist, I beseech thee, O Lord God, me a widow.	3 tu che facesti divenir preda le loro donne, andare schiave le loro figlie e tutte le loro sostanze esser divise fra i tuoi servi che avevano zelato l'onor tuo; soccorri, ti prego, a me vedova, Signore Dio mio.
4 For thou hast done the things of old, and hast devised one thing after another: and what thou hast designed hath been done.	4 Poiché tu facesti quelle cose dapprima, ed altre ne pensasti dopo, e quel che tu volesti fu fatto.
5 For all thy ways are prepared, and in thy providence thou hast placed thy judgments.	5 Poiché tutte le vie ti sono aperte, e nella tua provvidenza hai posti i tuoi giudizi.»
6 Look upon the camp of the Assyrians now, as thou wast pleased to look upon the camp of the Egyptians, when they pursued armed after thy servants, trusting in their chariots, and in their horsemen, and in a multitude of warriors.	6 Guarda ora al campo degli Assiri come già degnasti guardare a quello degli Egiziani, quando armati inseguivano 1 tuoi servi, fidando ne' loro carri, nella loro cavalleria, e nella moltitudine dei loro armati.
7 But thou lookedst over their camp, and darkness wearied them.	7 Ma tu ti voltasti verso il loro campo, e le tenebre li avvolsero.
8 The deep held their feet, and the waters overwhelmed them.	8 L'abisso fermò i loro passi, e le acque li ricoprirono.
9 So may it be with these also, O Lord, who trust in their multitude, and in their chariots, and in their pikes, and in their shields, and in their arrows, and glory in their spears,	9 Cosi, Signore, accade anche a questi, che confidano nel loro numero, e si gloriano de' carri e delle aste e degli scudi e dei dardi e delle lance,
10 And know not that thou art our God, who destroyest wars from the beginning, and the Lord is thy name.	10 e non sanno che sei tu il nostro Dio il quale sin da principio hai disperso gli eserciti, ed il nome tuo é "Il Signore".
11 Lift up thy arm as from the beginning, and crush their power with thy power: let their power fall in their wrath, who promise themselves to violate thy sanctuary, and defile the dwelling place of thy name, and to beat down with their sword the horn of thy altar.	11 Alza il tuo braccio come da principio, e spezza con la tua forza la forza loro. La tua collera fiacchi la potenza di quelli che si ripromettono di violare i tuoi santuarli, di profanare il tabernacolo del nome tuo, e d'abbattere con la loro spada i corni del tuo altare.
12 Bring to pass, O Lord, that his pride may be cut off with his own sword.	12 Fa', Signore, che dalla sua stessa spada venga recisa la sua superbia.
13 Let him be caught in the net of his own eyes in my regard, and do thou strike him by the graces of the words of my lips.	13 Sia egli preso da me al laccio de' suoi occhi, e tu percuotilo con la dolcezza del mio parlare.
14 Give me constancy in my mind, that I may despise him: and fortitude that I may overthrow him.	14 Da' all'animo mio fermezza per disprezzarlo, e forza per abbatterlo.
15 For this will be a glorious monument for thy name, when he shall fall by the hand of a woman.	15 Sarà invero un monumento al tuo nome, che la mano d'una donna l'abbia atterrato.
16 For thy power, O Lord, is not in a multitude, nor is thy pleasure in the strength of horses, nor from the beginning have the proud been acceptable to thee: but the prayer of the humble and the meek hath always pleased thee.	16 La tua potenza, Signore, non sta nel numero; nè la tua compiacenza nella forza de' cavalli; sin da principio i superbi non ti piacquero, e sempre invece ti piacque la preghiera degli umili e dei mansueti.
17 O God of the heavens, creator of the waters, and Lord of the whole creation, hear me a poor wretch, making supplication to thee, and presuming of thy mercy.	17 Dio de' cieli, creatore dell'acque, Signore di tutte le creature, esaudisci me miserabile che ti supplico e confido nella tua misericordia.
18 Remember, O Lord, thy covenant, and put thou words in my mouth, and strengthen the resolution in my heart, that thy house may continue in thy holiness:	18 Ricordati del tuo patto, Signore; poni tu le parole nella mia bocca, e rafforza nel mio cuore la risoluzione, affinchè la casa tua rimanga a te consacrata,
19 And all nations may acknowledge that thou art God, and there is no other besides thee.	19 e tutte le genti riconoscano che tu sei Dio, e non ve n'è altri fuori di te »,
