Atti degli Apostoli 21

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ORA, dopo che ci fummo con gran pena separati da loro, navigammo, e per diritto corso arrivammo a Coo, e il giorno seguente a Rodi, e di là a Patara.	1 When we had at last torn ourselves away from them and put to sea, we set a straight course andarrived at Cos; the next day we reached Rhodes, and from there went on to Patara.
2 E trovata una nave che passava in Fenicia, vi montammo su, e facemmo vela.	2 Here we found a ship bound for Phoenicia, so we went on board and sailed in her.
3 E, scoperto Cipri, e lasciatolo a man sinistra, navigammo in Siria, ed arrivammo a Tiro; perciocchè quivi si dovea scaricar la nave.	3 After sighting Cyprus and leaving it to port, we sailed to Syria and put in at Tyre, since the ship was tounload her cargo there.
4 E, trovati i discepoli, dimorammo quivi sette giorni; ed essi, per lo Spirito, dicevano a Paolo, che non salisse in Gerusalemme.	4 We sought out the disciples and stayed there a week. Speaking in the Spirit, they kept tel ing Paul notto go on to Jerusalem,
5 Ora, dopo che avemmo passati quivi que’ giorni, partimmo, e ci mettemmo in cammino, accompagnati da tutti loro, con le mogli, e figliuoli, fin fuor della città; e postici in ginocchioni in sul lito, facemmo orazione.	5 but when our time was up we set off. Together with the women and children they all escorted us on ourway til we were out of the town. When we reached the beach, we knelt down and prayed;
6 Poi, abbracciatici gli uni gli altri, montammo in su la nave; e quelli se ne tornarono alle case loro.	6 then, after saying good -- bye to each other, we went aboard and they returned home.
7 E noi, compiendo la navigazione, da Tiro arrivammo a Ptolemaida; e, salutati i fratelli, dimorammo un giorno appresso di loro	7 The end of our voyage from Tyre came when we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothersand stayed one day with them.
8 E il giorno seguente, essendo partiti, arrivammo a Cesarea; ed entrati in casa di Filippo l’evangelista, ch’era l’uno de’ sette, dimorammo appresso di lui.	8 The next day we left and came to Caesarea. Here we cal ed on Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven,and stayed with him.
9 Or egli avea quattro figliuole vergini, le quali profetizzavano.	9 He had four unmarried daughters who were prophets.
10 E, dimorando noi quivi molti giorni, un certo profeta, chiamato per nome Agabo, discese di Giudea.	10 When we had been there several days a prophet called Agabus arrived from Judaea.
11 Ed egli, essendo venuto a noi, e presa la cintura di Paolo, se ne legò le mani ed i piedi, e disse: Questo dice lo Spirito Santo: Così legheranno i Giudei in Gerusalemme l’uomo di cui è questa cintura, e lo metteranno nelle mani de’ Gentili.	11 He came up to us, took Paul's belt and tied up his own feet and hands, and said, 'This is what theHoly Spirit says, "The man to whom this girdle belongs wil be tied up like this by the Jews in Jerusalem andhanded over to the gentiles." '
12 Ora, quando udimmo queste cose, e noi, e que’ del luogo, lo pregavamo che non salisse in Gerusalemme.	12 When we heard this, we and al the local people urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.
13 Ma Paolo rispose: Che fate voi, piangendo, e macerandomi il cuore? poichè io sia tutto pronto, non solo ad esser legato, ma eziandio a morire in Gerusalemme, per lo nome del Signor Gesù.	13 To this he replied, 'What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For my part, I am ready notonly to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.'
14 E, non potendo egli esser persuaso, noi ci acquetammo, dicendo: La volontà del Signore sia fatta	14 And so, as he would not be persuaded, we gave up the attempt, saying, 'The Lord's wil be done.'
15 E, dopo que’ giorni, ci mettemmo in ordine, e salimmo in Gerusalemme.	15 After this we made our preparations and went on up to Jerusalem.
16 E con noi vennero eziandio alcuni de’ discepoli di Cesarea, menando con loro un certo Mnason Cipriota, antico discepolo, presso il quale dovevamo albergare.	16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and took us to the house of a Cypriot withwhom we were to lodge; he was cal ed Mnason and had been one of the earliest disciples.
17 Ora, come fummo giunti in Gerusalemme, i fratelli ci accolsero lietamente.	17 On our arrival in Jerusalem the brothers gave us a very warm welcome.
18 E il giorno seguente, Paolo entrò con noi da Giacomo; e tutti gli anziani vi si trovarono.	18 The next day Paul went with us to visit James, and all the elders were present.
19 E Paolo, salutatili, raccontò loro ad una ad una le cose che il Signore avea fatte fra i Gentili, per lo suo ministerio.	19 After greeting them he gave a detailed account of al that God had done among the gentiles throughhis ministry.
20 Ed essi, uditele, glorificavano Iddio; poi dissero a Paolo: Fratello, tu vedi quante migliaia vi sono de’ Giudei che hanno creduto; e tutti son zelanti della legge.	20 They gave glory to God when they heard this. Then they said, 'You see, brother, how thousands ofJews have now become believers, al of them staunch upholders of the Law;
21 Or sono stati informati intorno a te, che tu insegni tutti i Giudei, che son fra i Gentili, di rivoltarsi da Mosè, dicendo che non circoncidano i figliuoli, e non camminino secondo i riti.	21 and what they have heard about you is that you instruct al Jews living among the gentiles to breakaway from Moses, authorising them not to circumcise their children or to fol ow the customary practices.
22 Che devesi adunque fare? del tutto conviene che la moltitudine si raduni, perciocchè udiranno che tu sei venuto.	22 What is to be done? A crowd is sure to gather, for they wil hear that you have come.
23 Fa’ dunque questo che ti diciamo. Noi abbiamo quattro uomini, che hanno un voto sopra loro.	23 So this is what we suggest that you should do; we have four men here who are under a vow;
24 Prendili teco, e purificati con loro, e fa’ la spesa con loro; acciocchè si tondano il capo, e tutti conoscano che non è nulla di quelle cose delle quali sono stati informati intorno a te; ma che tu ancora procedi osservando la legge.	24 take these men along and be purified with them and pay al the expenses connected with the shavingof their heads. This wil let everyone know there is no truth in the reports they have heard about you, and thatyou too observe the Law by your way of life.
25 Ma, quant’è a’ Gentili che hanno creduto, noi ne abbiamo scritto, avendo statuito che non osservino alcuna cosa tale; ma solo che si guardino dalle cose sacrificate agl’idoli, e dal sangue, e dalle cose soffocate, e dalla fornicazione.	25 About the gentiles who have become believers, we have written giving them our decision that theymust abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from il icitmarriages.'
26 Allora Paolo, presi seco quegli uomini, il giorno seguente, dopo essersi con loro purificato, entrò con loro nel tempio, pubblicando i giorni della purificazione esser compiuti, infino a tanto che l’offerta fu presentata per ciascun di loro	26 So the next day Paul took the men along and was purified with them, and he visited the Temple togive notice of the time when the period of purification would be over and the offering would have to be presentedon behalf of each of them.
27 Ora, come i sette giorni erano presso che compiuti, i Giudei dell’Asia, vedutolo nel tempio, commossero tutta la moltitudine, e gli misero le mani addosso,	27 The seven days were nearly over when some Jews from Asia caught sight of him in the Temple andstirred up the crowd and seized him,
28 gridando: Uomini Israeliti, venite al soccorso; costui è quell’uomo, che insegna per tutto a tutti una dottrina che è contro al popolo, e contro alla legge, e contro a questo luogo; ed oltre a ciò, ha eziandio menati de’ Greci dentro al tempio, ed ha contaminato questo santo luogo.	28 shouting, 'Men of Israel, help! This is the man who preaches to everyone everywhere against ourpeople, against the Law and against this place. He has even profaned this Holy Place by bringing Greeks intothe Temple.'
29 Perciocchè dinanzi avean veduto Trofimo Efesio nella città con Paolo, e pensavano ch’egli l’avesse menato dentro al tempio.	29 They had, in fact, previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and thought that Paulhad brought him into the Temple.
30 E tutta la città fu commossa, e si fece un concorso di popolo; e, preso Paolo, lo trassero fuor del tempio; e subito le porte furon serrate.	30 This roused the whole city; people came running from al sides; they seized Paul and dragged him outof the Temple, and the gates were closed behind them.
31 Ora, com’essi cercavano d’ucciderlo, il grido salì al capitano della schiera, che tutta Gerusalemme era sottosopra.	31 While they were setting about killing him, word reached the tribune of the cohort that there was tumultal over Jerusalem.
32 Ed egli in quello stante prese de’ soldati, e de’ centurioni, e corse a’ Giudei. Ed essi, veduto il capitano, e i soldati, restarono di batter Paolo.	32 He immediately called out soldiers and centurions and charged down on the crowd, who stoppedbeating Paul when they saw the tribune and the soldiers.
33 E il capitano, accostatosi, lo prese, e comandò che fosse legato di due catene; poi domandò chi egli era, e che cosa avea fatto.	33 When the tribune came up he took Paul into custody, had him bound with two chains and enquiredwho he was and what he had done.
34 E gli uni gridavano una cosa, e gli altri un’altra, nella moltitudine; laonde, non potendone egli saper la certezza, per lo tumulto, comandò ch’egli fosse menato nella rocca.	34 People in the crowd called out different things, and since the noise made it impossible for him to getany positive information, the tribune ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress.
35 Ed avvenne, quando egli fu sopra i gradi, ch’egli fu portato da’ soldati, per lo sforzo della moltitudine.	35 When Paul reached the steps, the crowd became so violent that he had to be carried by the soldiers;
36 Poichè la moltitudine del popolo lo seguitava, gridando: Toglilo.	36 and indeed the whole mob was after them, shouting, 'Do away with him!'
37 OR Paolo, come egli era per esser menato dentro alla rocca, disse al capitano: Emmi egli lecito di dirti qualche cosa? Ed egli disse: Sai tu Greco?	37 Just as Paul was being taken into the fortress, he asked the tribune if he could have a word with him.The tribune said, 'You speak Greek, then?
38 Non sei tu quell’Egizio, il quale a’ dì passati suscitò, e menò nel deserto que’ quattromila ladroni?	38 Aren't you the Egyptian who started the recent revolt and led those four thousand cut-throats out intothe desert?'
39 E Paolo disse: Quant’è a me, io son uomo Giudeo, da Tarso, cittadino di quella non ignobile città di Cilicia; or io ti prego che tu mi permetta di parlare al popolo.	39 'I?' said Paul, 'I am a Jew and a citizen of the wel -known city of Tarsus in Cilicia. Please give mepermission to speak to the people.'
40 Ed avendoglielo egli permesso, Paolo, stando in piè sopra i gradi, fece cenno con la mano al popolo. E, fattosi gran silenzio, parlò loro in lingua ebrea, dicendo:	40 The man gave his consent and Paul, standing at the top of the steps, raised his hand to the people forsilence. A profound silence fol owed, and he started speaking to them in Hebrew.
