Proverbi 20

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il vino è schernitore, e la cervogia è tumultuante; E chiunque ne è vago non è savio	1 Wine is reckless, liquor rowdy; unwise is anyone whom it seduces.
2 Il terrore del re è come il ruggito del leoncello; Chi lo provoca ad indegnazione pecca contro a sè stesso	2 Like the roaring of a lion is the fury of a king; whoever provokes him sins against himself.
3 Egli è gloria all’uomo di rimanersi di contesa; Ma chiunque è stolto si fa schernire	3 It is praiseworthy to stop short of a law-suit; only a fool flies into a rage.
4 Il pigro non ara per cagion del freddo; E poi nella ricolta va accattando, e non trova nulla	4 In autumn the idler does not plough, at harvest time he looks -- nothing there!
5 Il consiglio nel cuor dell’uomo è un’acqua profonda; E l’uomo intendente l’attignerà	5 The resources of the human heart are like deep waters: an understanding person has only to draw onthem.
6 Il più degli uomini predicano ciascuno la sua benignità; Ma chi troverà un uomo verace?	6 Many describe themselves as people of faithful love, but who can find someone real y to be trusted?
7 I figliuoli del giusto, che cammina nella sua integrità, Saranno beati dopo di lui	7 The upright whose ways are blameless -- blessed the children who come after!
8 Il re, sedendo sopra il trono del giudicio, Dissipa ogni male con gli occhi suoi	8 A king enthroned on the judgement seat with one look scatters al that is evil.
9 Chi può dire: Io ho purgato il mio cuore, Io son netto del mio peccato?	9 Who can say, 'I have cleansed my heart, I am purified of my sin'?
10 Doppio peso, e doppio staio, Sono amendue cosa abbominevole al Signore	10 One weight here, another there; here one measure, there another: both alike are abhorrent toYahweh.
11 Fin da fanciullo l’uomo è riconosciuto da’ suoi atti, Se egli sarà puro, e se le sue opere saranno diritte	11 A young man's character appears in what he does, if his behaviour is pure and straight.
12 Il Signore ha fatte amendue queste cose: E l’orecchio che ode, e l’occhio che vede	12 Ear that hears, eye that sees, Yahweh has made both of these.
13 Non amare il sonno, che tu non impoverisca; Tieni gli occhi aperti, e sarai saziato di pane	13 Do not love sleep or you will know poverty; keep your eyes open and have your fil of food.
14 Chi compera dice: Egli è cattivo, egli è cattivo; Ma quando se n’è andato, allora si vanta	14 'No good, no good!' says the buyer, but he goes off congratulating himself.
15 Vi è dell’oro, e delle perle assai; Ma le labbra di scienza sono un vaso prezioso	15 There are gold and jewels of every type, but a priceless ornament is speech informed by knowledge.
16 Prendi pure il vestimento di chi ha fatta sicurtà per lo strano; Prendi pegno da lui per gli stranieri	16 Take the man's clothes! He has gone surety for a stranger. Take a pledge from him to the profit ofpersons unknown!
17 Il pane acquistato con frode è soave all’uomo; Ma poi la sua bocca si trova piena di ghiaia	17 Bread is sweet when it is got by fraud, but later the mouth is ful of grit.
18 I disegni son renduti stabili con consiglio; Fa’ dunque la guerra con prudenti deliberazioni	18 Plans are matured by consultation; take wise advice when waging war.
19 Chi va sparlando palesa il segreto: Non rimescolarti adunque con chi è allettante di labbra	19 The bearer of gossip lets out secrets; do not mingle with chatterers.
20 La lampana di chi maledice suo padre, o sua madre, Sarà spenta nelle più oscure tenebre	20 Whoever curses father or mother wil have his lamp put out in the deepest darkness.
21 L’eredità acquistata di subito da principio Non sarà benedetta alla fine	21 Property quickly come by at first wil not be blessed in the end.
22 Non dire: Io renderò il male; Aspetta il Signore, ed egli ti salverà	22 Do not say, 'I shall repay evil'; put your hope in Yahweh and he wil keep you safe.
23 Doppio peso è cosa abbominevole al Signore; E le bilance fallaci non sono buone	23 One weight here, another there: this is abhorrent to Yahweh, false scales are not good.
24 I passi dell’uomo sono dal Signore; E come intenderà l’uomo la sua via?	24 Yahweh guides the steps of the powerful: but who can comprehend human ways?
25 Dire inconsideratamente: Questa è cosa sacra; E riflettere dopo aver fatti i voti, è un laccio all’uomo	25 Anyone is trapped who cries 'Dedicated!' and begins to reflect only after the vow.
26 Il re savio dissipa gli empi, E rimena la ruota sopra loro	26 A wise king winnows the wicked and makes the wheel pass over them.
27 L’anima dell’uomo è una lampana del Signore, Che investiga tutti i segreti nascondimenti del ventre	27 The human spirit is the lamp of Yahweh -- searching the deepest self.
28 Benignità e verità guardano il re; Ed egli ferma il suo trono per benignità	28 Faithful love and loyalty mount guard over the king, his throne is founded on saving justice.
29 La forza de’ giovani è la lor gloria; E l’onor de’ vecchi è la canutezza	29 The pride of the young is their strength, the ornament of the old, grey hairs.
30 I lividori delle battiture, e le percosse che penetrano addentro nel ventre Sono una lisciatura nel malvagio	30 Wounding strokes are good medicine for evil, blows have an effect on the inmost self.
