| 1 Since I have lost al taste for life, I shal give free rein to my complaining; I shal let my embittered soulspeak out. |
Io dirò a Dio: Non condannarmi; Fammi assapere perchè tu litighi meco. | 2 I shal say to God, 'Do not condemn me, tel me what your case is against me. |
| 3 Is it right for you to attack me, in contempt for what you yourself have made, thus abetting theschemes of the wicked? |
Hai tu occhi di carne? Vedi tu come vede l’uomo? | 4 Are your eyes mere human eyes, do you see as human beings see? |
Sono i tuoi giorni come i giorni dell’uomo mortale? Sono i tuoi anni come l’età umana? | 5 Are you mortal like human beings? do your years pass as human days pass? |
| 6 You, who enquire into my faults and investigate my sins, |
A te si appartiene di conoscere che io non son reo; E non vi è niuno che riscuota dalla tua mano | 7 you know very wel that I am innocent, and that no one can rescue me from your grasp. |
| 8 Your hands having shaped and created me, now you change your mind and mean to destroy me! |
Deh! ricordati che tu mi hai formato come dell’argilla; E tu mi fai ritornare in polvere. | 9 Having made me, remember, as though of clay, now you mean to turn me back into dust! |
| 10 Did you not pour me out like milk, and then let me thicken like curds, |
Tu mi hai vestito di pelle e di carne E mi hai contesto d’ossa e di nervi. | 11 clothe me with skin and flesh, and weave me of bone and sinew? |
| 12 In your love you gave me life, and in your care watched over my every breath. |
E pur tu avevi riposte queste cose nel cuor tuo; Io conosco che questo era appo te | 13 Yet, al the while, you had a secret plan: I know that you were biding your time |
| 14 to see if I should sin and then not acquit me of my faults. |
Se io sono stato reo, guai a me; E se son giusto, non però alzo il capo, Essendo sazio d’ignominia, e veggendo la mia afflizione; | 15 Woe to me, if I am guilty; even if I am upright, I dare not lift my head, so overwhelmed with shameand drunk with pain am I! |
E se pur l’alzo, tu mi cacci a giusa di fiero leone, E torni a dimostrarti maraviglioso contro a me. | 16 Proud as a lion, you hunt me down, multiplying your exploits at my expense, |
Tu mi produci in faccia nuovi testimoni tuoi; Tu accresci la tua indegnazione contro a me; Eserciti a muta sono sopra me. | 17 attacking me again and again, your fury against me ever increasing, your troops assailing me, waveafter wave. |
Perchè dunque mi hai tratto fuor della matrice? Io vi sarei spirato, e l’occhio d’alcuno non mi avrebbe veduto. | 18 Why did you bring me out of the womb? I should have perished then, unseen by any eye, |
| 19 a being that had never been, to be carried from womb to grave. |
The days of my life are few enough: turn your eyes away, leave me a little joy, |
Avanti che io me ne vada alla terra delle tenebre, Dell’ombra della morte, onde mai non tornerò; | 21 before I go to the place of no return, to the land of darkness and shadow dark as death, |
Alla terra d’oscurità simile a caligine; D’ombra di morte, ove non è ordine alcuno; E la quale, quando fa chiaro, è simile a caligine | 22 where dimness and disorder hold sway, and light itself is like dead of night. |
