DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 DOPO queste cose, e questa fedeltà, Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, venne, ed entrò in Giuda, e pose campo sopra le città forti, e deliberò di sforzarle, per ridurle sotto la sua ubbidienza.	1 After these loyal actions, Sennacherib king of Assyria advanced and invaded Judah, and laid siege tothe fortified towns, intending to demolish them.
2 Ed Ezechia, veduto che Sennacherib era venuto, e ch’egli volgeva la faccia contro a Gerusalemme, per combatterla;	2 Hezekiah, realising that Sennacherib's advance was the preliminary to an attack on Jerusalem,
3 si consigliò co’ suoi principali ufficiali, e co’ suoi uomini di valore, di turar le acque delle fonti ch’erano fuor della città; ed essi gli prestarono aiuto.	3 consulted his officers and warriors about sealing off the waters of the springs outside the city, and theysupported him.
4 Ed un gran popolo si adunò, e turarono tutte le fonti, e il torrente che si spande per mezzo la contrada, dicendo: Perchè i re degli Assiri, venendo, troverebbero essi copia d’acque?	4 So a large number of people were cal ed out to block al the springs and cut off the watercourseflowing through the country. 'Why', they said, 'should the kings of Assyria find plenty of water when they arrive?'
5 Egli prese eziandio animo di ristorar tutte le mura rotte, e le alzò fino alle torri; e di fuori edificò un altro muro. Egli fortificò ancora Millo, nella Città di Davide; e fece far dardi e scudi in gran quantità.	5 Acting with determination, he also repaired al the damaged parts of the wal , built towers on it,constructed a second wal on the outer side, strengthened the Mil o of the City of David and made quantities ofmissiles and shields.
6 Ed ordinò capitani di guerra sopra il popolo, e li adunò appresso di sè nella piazza della porta della città, e li confortò, dicendo:	6 He then appointed generals to command the people, summoned them to him in the square by the citygate and spoke as fol ows to encourage them,
7 Prendete animo, e fortificatevi; non temiate, e non vi spaventate per lo re degli Assiri, nè per tutta la moltitudine che è con lui; perciocchè con noi v’è uno maggiore che con lui.	7 'Be strong and brave; do not be afraid or tremble when you face the king of Assyria and the wholehorde he brings with him, for there are more on our side than on his.
8 Con lui è il braccio della carne; ma con noi è il Signore Iddio nostro, per aiutarci, e per combatter le nostre battaglie. E il popolo si rassicurò in su le parole di Ezechia, re di Giuda	8 He has only human strength, but we have Yahweh our God to help us and fight our battles.' Thepeople took heart at the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9 Dopo questo, Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, essendo sopra Lachis con tutte le forze del suo imperio, mandò i suoi servitori in Gerusalemme ad Ezechia, re di Giuda, ed a tutti i Giudei ch’erano in Gerusalemme per dir loro:	9 Next, Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was then besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent hisrepresentatives to Jerusalem, to Hezekiah king of Judah, and al Judah at Jerusalem, with the fol owingmessage,
10 Così ha detto Sennacherib, re degli Assiri: In che vi confidate voi, per dimorare in Gerusalemme nell’assedio?	10 'Sennacherib king of Assyria says this, "What gives you the confidence to remain in the fortress ofJerusalem?
11 Ezechia non vi seduce egli, per ridurvi a morir di fame e di sete, dicendo: Il Signore Iddio nostro ci salverà dalla mano del re degli Assiri?	11 Isn't Hezekiah deluding you, only to condemn you to die of famine and thirst, when he says: Yahwehour God wil save us from the King of Assyria's clutches?
12 Non ha esso Ezechia tolti via gli alti luoghi, e gli altari di esso Signore, e detto a Giuda e a Gerusalemme: Adorate solo davanti ad un Altare, e fate sopra esso ardere i vostri sacrificii?	12 Isn't Hezekiah the very man who has suppressed his high places and altars, and given the order toJudah and to Jerusalem: You must worship before one altar and on that alone offer incense?
13 Non sapete voi quello che io ed i miei padri abbiam fatto a tutti i popoli de’ paesi? gl’iddii delle genti dei paesi hanno eglino giammai potuto salvare il lor paese dalla mia mano?	13 Don't you know what I and my ancestors have done to al the peoples of the other countries? Havethe national gods of those countries had the slightest success in saving their countries from my clutches?
14 Quale, d’infra tutti gl’iddii di quelle genti che i miei padri hanno distrutte, ha potuto salvare il suo popolo dalla mia mano, che l’Iddio vostro ve ne possa salvare?	14 Of al the gods of those nations whom my ancestors devoted to destruction, which one has been ableto save his people from my clutches, for your god to be able to save you from my clutches?
15 Ora dunque Ezechia non v’inganni, e non vi seduca in questa maniera; e voi non gli prestate fede; perciocchè poichè alcun dio d’alcuna gente, o regno, non ha potuto salvare il suo popolo dalla mia mano, nè dalla mano de’ miei padri, quanto meno vi salverà l’Iddio vostro dalla mia mano?	15 Do not let Hezekiah mislead you. Do not let him delude you like this. Do not believe him, for no godof any nation or kingdom has been able to save his people from me or from my ancestors' clutches. No more wilyour god be able to save you from my clutches." '
16 Ed i servitori di esso dissero ancora molte altre cose contro al Signore Iddio, e contro ad Ezechia, suo servitore.	16 And his representatives said a great deal more, maligning Yahweh God, and his servant Hezekiah.
17 Sennacherib scrisse oltre a ciò lettere, per ischernire il Signore Iddio di Israele, e per parlar contro a lui in questa maniera: Siccome gl’iddii delle genti de’ paesi non hanno salvati i lor popoli dalla mia mano, così anche l’Iddio di Ezechia non salverà il suo.	17 He also wrote a letter to insult Yahweh, God of Israel, maligning him as follows, 'Just as the nationalgods of the other countries could not save their peoples from my clutches, so Hezekiah's god cannot save hispeople from my clutches.'
18 Quei servitori gridarono ancora ad alta voce, in lingua giudaica, al popolo di Gerusalemme, ch’era in su le mura, per ispaventarlo, e per conturbarlo; per prendere in questa maniera la città.	18 They then shouted loudly in the Judaean language to the people of Jerusalem on the ramparts tofrighten and confuse them, in the hope of capturing the city,
19 E parlarono dell’Iddio di Gerusalemme, come degl’iddii de’ popoli della terra, che sono opera di mani d’uomini.	19 maligning the God of Jerusalem as though he were one of the man-made gods of other peoples inthe world.
20 Allora il re Ezechia, e il profeta Isaia, figliuolo d’Amos, fecero orazione per queste cose, e gridarono verso il cielo.	20 Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed and cried out to Heaven about this,
21 E il Signore mandò un Angelo, il quale distrusse ogni valente uomo, ed ogni capo e capitano ch’era nel campo del re degli Assiri; laonde egli se ne ritornò svergognato al suo paese. Ed essendo entrato nella casa de’ suoi dii, di quelli che erano usciti delle sue interiora, l’uccisero quivi con la spada.	21 and Yahweh sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander and officer in the king ofAssyria's camp. So he had to retire shamefacedly to his own country and when he went into the temple of hisgod, some of his own sons there struck him down with the sword.
22 Così il Signore salvò Ezechia, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, dalla mano di Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, e dalla mano d’ogni altro; e li sollevò d’ogn’intorno.	22 So Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the clutches of Sennacherib kingof Assyria and of everyone else, and gave them peace on every side.
23 E molti portavano offerte al Signore in Gerusalemme, e cose preziose ad Ezechia, re di Giuda. E dopo queste cose, egli fu innalzato appresso tutte le nazioni	23 Many people then brought gifts to Yahweh in Jerusalem and valuable presents to Hezekiah king ofJudah; from then on, all the other nations held him in high esteem.
24 IN que’ giorni, Ezechia infermò fino alla morte; ma egli fece orazione al Signore; ed esso gli parlò, e gli diede un segno.	24 About then Hezekiah fel il and was at the point of death. He prayed to Yahweh, who heard him andgranted him a sign.
25 Ma Ezechia non fu riconoscente del beneficio ricevuto; perciocchè il suo cuore s’innalzò; laonde vi fu indegnazione contro a lui, contro a Giuda, e contro a Gerusalemme.	25 But Hezekiah made no return for the benefit which he had received; he became proud and broughtretribution on himself and on Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Ma pure Ezechia, con gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, si umiliò di ciò che il suo cuore si era innalzato; e per ciò l’indegnazione del Signore non venne sopra loro al tempo d’Ezechia.	26 Then, however, Hezekiah did humble himself in his pride, and so did the inhabitants of Jerusalem; asa result of which, Yahweh's retribution did not overtake them during Hezekiah's lifetime.
27 Ezechia dunque ebbe grandissime ricchezze e gloria; e si fece de’ tesori d’argento, e d’oro, e di pietre preziose, e d’aromati, e di scudi, e d’ogni sorta di cari arredi.	27 Hezekiah enjoyed immense riches and honour. He built himself treasuries for gold, silver, preciousstones, spices, jewels and every kind of desirable object,
28 Fece ancora de’ magazzini per l’entrata del grano, e del vino, e dell’olio; e delle stalle, per ogni sorta di grosso bestiame; e delle mandre presso di quelle.	28 as wel as storehouses for his returns of grain, new wine and olive oil, and stal s for al kinds of cattleand pens for the flocks.
29 Si fece eziandio delle città; ed acquistò molto bestiame, minuto e grosso; perciocchè Iddio gli avea date grandissime ricchezze.	29 He also provided himself with donkeys in addition to his immense wealth of flocks and herds, sinceGod had made him immensely wealthy.
30 Ezechia fu eziandio quello che turò la fonte alta delle acque di Ghihon, e condusse quell’acqua per diritto sotto terra, dall’Occidente alla città di Davide. Ed Ezechia prosperò in tutte le sue opere.	30 It was Hezekiah who stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them straightdown on the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah succeeded in al that he undertook,
31 E in questo stato, essendo lui con gli ambasciatori de’ principi di Babilonia, i quali aveano mandato a lui per informarsi del miracolo ch’era avvenuto in terra, Iddio lo lasciò, per far prova di lui, per conoscer tutto ciò ch’egli avea nel cuor suo.	31 although when the envoys were sent to him by the rulers of Babylon to enquire about theextraordinary thing which had taken place in the country, God left him alone to test him and discover what lay inhis heart.
32 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Ezechia, e le sue pie opere; ecco, queste cose sono scritte nella visione del profeta Isaia, figliuolo di Amos, e nel libro dei re di Giuda, e d’Israele.	32 The rest of the history of Hezekiah, and his deeds of faithful love, are recorded in the Vision of theprophet Isaiah son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
33 Poi Ezechia giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nel più alto delle sepolture de’ figliuoli di Davide. E tutto Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, gli fecero onore alla sua morte. E Manasse, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo	33 Then Hezekiah fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the upper section of the tombs of thesons of David. Al Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem paid him honours at his death. His son Manassehsucceeded him.
