| 1 Fu riferito intanto ad Oloferne, comandante supremo dell'esercito di Assur, che gli Israeliti si preparavano alla guerra e avevano bloccato i passi montani, avevano fortificato tutte le sommità dei monti e avevano disposto ostacoli nelle pianure. | 1 When Holofernes, the general of the Assyrian army, heard that the people of Israel had prepared for war and had closed the passes in the hills and fortified all the high hilltops and set up barricades in the plains, |
| 2 Egli montò in gran furore e convocò tutti i capi di Moab e gli strateghi di Ammon e tutti i satrapi delle regioni marittime, | 2 he was very angry. So he called together all the princes of Moab and the commanders of Ammon and all the governors of the coastland, |
| 3 e disse loro: "Spiegatemi un po', voi figli di Canaan, che popolo è questo che dimora sui monti e come sono le città che egli abita, quanti sono gli effettivi del suo esercito, dove risiede la loro forza e il loro vigore, chi si è messo alla loro testa come re e condottiero del loro esercito | 3 and said to them, "Tell me, you Canaanites, what people is this that lives in the hill country? What cities do they inhabit? How large is their army, and in what does their power or strength consist? Who rules over them as king, leading their army? |
4 e perché hanno rifiutato di venire incontro a me a differenza di tutte le popolazioni dell'occidente".
| 4 And why have they alone, of all who live in the west, refused to come out and meet me?" |
| 5 Gli rispose Achior, condottiero di tutti gli Ammoniti: "Ascolti bene il mio signore la risposta dalle labbra del suo servo: io riferirò la verità sul conto di questo popolo, che sta su queste montagne vicino al luogo ove risiedi, né uscirà menzogna dalla bocca del suo servo. | 5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites, said to him, "Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth about this people that dwells in the nearby mountain district. No falsehood shall come from your servant's mouth. |
| 6 Questo popolo si compone di discendenti dei Caldei. | 6 This people is descended from the Chaldeans. |
| 7 Essi si trasferirono dapprima nella Mesopotamia, perché non vollero seguire gli dèi dei loro padri che si trovavano nel paese dei Caldei. | 7 At one time they lived in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers who were in Chaldea. |
| 8 Essi avevano abbandonato la tradizione dei loro padri e avevano adorato il Dio del cielo, quel Dio che essi avevano conosciuto; perciò li avevano scacciati dalla presenza dei loro dèi ed essi si erano rifugiati in Mesopotamia e furono là per molto tempo. | 8 For they had left the ways of their ancestors, and they worshiped the God of heaven, the God they had come to know; hence they drove them out from the presence of their gods; and they fled to Mesopotamia, and lived there for a long time. |
| 9 Ma il loro Dio comandò loro di uscire dal paese che li ospitava e venire nel paese di Canaan. Qui infatti si stabilirono e si arricchirono di oro e di argento e di bestiame in gran numero. | 9 Then their God commanded them to leave the place where they were living and go to the land of Canaan. There they settled, and prospered, with much gold and silver and very many cattle. |
| 10 Poi scesero in Egitto, perché la fame aveva invaso tutto il paese di Canaan, e vi rimasero come stranieri finché trovarono da vivere. Là divennero anche una moltitudine imponente, tanto che non si poteva contare la loro discendenza. | 10 When a famine spread over Canaan they went down to Egypt and lived there as long as they had food; and there they became a great multitude-- so great that they could not be counted. |
| 11 Ma si alzò contro di loro il re dell'Egitto che li sfruttò nella preparazione dei mattoni e perciò furono umiliati e trattati come schiavi. | 11 So the king of Egypt became hostile to them; he took advantage of them and set them to making bricks, and humbled them and made slaves of them. |
| 12 Essi alzarono suppliche al loro Dio e questi percosse tutto il paese d'Egitto con castighi ai quali non c'era rimedio. Perciò gli Egiziani li mandarono via dal loro paese. | 12 Then they cried out to their God, and he afflicted the whole land of Egypt with incurable plagues; and so the Egyptians drove them out of their sight. |
| 13 Dio asciugò il Mare Rosso davanti a loro | 13 Then God dried up the Red Sea before them, |
| 14 e li guidò per la via del Sinai e di Cadesbarne; essi eliminarono quanti risiedevano nel deserto. | 14 and he led them by the way of Sinai and Kadesh-barnea, and drove out all the people of the wilderness. |
| 15 Poi dimorarono nel paese degli Amorrei e sterminarono con la loro forza gli abitanti di Esebon; quindi passarono il Giordano e si insediarono in tutte quelle montagne. | 15 So they lived in the land of the Amorites, and by their might destroyed all the inhabitants of Heshbon; and crossing over the Jordan they took possession of all the hill country. |
| 16 Scacciarono davanti a loro il Cananeo, il Perizzita, il Gebuseo, Sichem e tutti i Gergesei e abitarono nel loro territorio per molti anni. | 16 And they drove out before them the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the Shechemites and all the Gergesites, and lived there a long time. |
| 17 In realtà fin quando non peccavano contro il loro Dio erano nella prosperità, perché il Dio che è con loro odia il male. | 17 As long as they did not sin against their God they prospered, for the God who hates iniquity is with them. |
| 18 Quando invece si allontanarono dagli ordinamenti che egli aveva loro imposti, furono terribilmente sconfitti in molte guerre e condotti prigionieri in paese straniero, il tempio del loro Dio fu raso al suolo e le loro città caddero in potere dei loro nemici. | 18 But when they departed from the way which he had appointed for them, they were utterly defeated in many battles and were led away captive to a foreign country; the temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were captured by their enemies. |
| 19 Ora appunto, riconciliati con il loro Dio, hanno fatto ritorno dai luoghi dove erano stati dispersi, hanno ripreso possesso di Gerusalemme, dove è il loro santuario, e si sono stabiliti sulle montagne, che prima erano deserte. | 19 But now they have returned to their God, and have come back from the places to which they were scattered, and have occupied Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled in the hill country, because it was uninhabited. |
| 20 Ora, mio sovrano e signore, se vi è qualche aberrazione in questo popolo perché ha peccato contro il suo Dio, se cioè ci accorgiamo che c'è in mezzo a loro questo inciampo, avanziamo e diamo loro battaglia. | 20 Now therefore, my master and lord, if there is any unwitting error in this people and they sin against their God and we find out their offense, then we will go up and defeat them. |
| 21 Se invece non c'è alcuna trasgressione nella loro gente, il mio signore passi oltre, perché il Signore, che è il loro Dio, non si faccia loro scudo e noi diveniamo oggetto di scherno davanti a tutta la terra". | 21 But if there is no transgression in their nation, then let my lord pass them by; for their Lord will defend them, and their God will protect them, and we shall be put to shame before the whole world." |
| 22 Ecco, appena Achior cessò di pronunziare queste parole, tutta la turba che circondava la tenda e stazionava intorno, alzò un mormorio, mentre gli ufficiali di Oloferne e tutti gli abitanti della costa e i Moabiti proponevano di ucciderlo. | 22 When Achior had finished saying this, all the men standing around the tent began to complain; Holofernes' officers and all the men from the seacoast and from Moab insisted that he must be put to death. |
| 23 "Non avremo certo paura degli Israeliti, dicevano; vedete che è un popolo nel quale non ci sono esercito né forze armate per un valido schieramento. | 23 "For," they said, "we will not be afraid of the Israelites; they are a people with no strength or power for making war. |
| 24 Dunque avanziamo presto e saranno pascolo di tutto il tuo esercito, o sovrano Oloferne". | 24 Therefore let us go up, Lord Holofernes, and they will be devoured by your vast army." |
