EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Después de esto, Jesús recorría la Galilea; no quería transitar por Judea porque los judíos intentaban matarlo.	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 Se acercaba la fiesta judía de las Chozas,	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 y sus hermanos le dijeron: «No te quedes aquí; ve a Judea, para que también tus discípulos de allí vean las obras que haces.	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 Cuando uno quiere hacerse conocer, no actúa en secreto; ya que tú haces estas cosas, manifiéstate al mundo».	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 Efectivamente, ni sus propios hermanos creían en él.	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 Jesús les dijo: «Mi tiempo no ha llegado todavía, mientras que para ustedes cualquier tiempo es bueno.	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 El mundo no tiene por qué odiarlos a ustedes; me odia a mí, porque atestiguo contra él que sus obras son malas.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 Suban ustedes para la fiesta. Yo no subo a esa fiesta, porque mi tiempo no se ha cumplido todavía».	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 Después de decirles esto, permaneció en Galilea.	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 Sin embargo, cuando sus hermanos subieron para la fiesta, también él subió, pero en secreto, sin hacerse ver.	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 Los judíos lo buscaban durante la fiesta y decían: «¿Dónde está ese?».	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 Jesús era el comentario de la multitud. Unos opinaban: «Es un hombre de bien». Otros, en cambio, decían: «No, engaña al pueblo».	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 Sin embargo, nadie hablaba de él abiertamente, por temor a los judíos.	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 Promediaba ya la celebración de la fiesta, cuando Jesús subió al Templo y comenzó a enseñar.	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 Los judíos, admirados, decían: «¿Cómo conoce las Escrituras sin haber estudiado?».	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 Jesús les respondió: «Mi enseñanza no es mía sino de aquel que me envió.	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 El que quiere hacer la voluntad de Dios conocerá si esta enseñanza es de Dios o si yo hablo por mi cuenta.	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 El que habla por su cuenta busca su propia gloria, pero el que busca la gloria de aquel que lo envió, ese dice la verdad y no hay nada de falso en él.	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 ¿Acaso Moisés no les dio la Ley? Pero ninguno de ustedes la cumple. ¿Por qué quieren matarme?».	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 La multitud respondió: «Estás poseído por el demonio: ¿quién quiere matarte?».	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 Jesús continuó: «Por una sola obra que realicé, ustedes están maravillados.	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 Moisés les dio la circuncisión –aunque ella no viene de Moisés, sino de los patriarcas– y ustedes la practican también en sábado.	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 Si se circuncida a un hombre en sábado para no quebrantar la Ley de Moisés, ¿cómo ustedes se enojan conmigo porque he curado completamente a un hombre en sábado?	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 No juzguen según las apariencias, sino conforme a la justicia».	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 Algunos de Jerusalén decían: «¿No es este aquel a quien querían matar?	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 ¡Y miren como habla abiertamente y nadie le dice nada! ¿Habrán reconocido las autoridades que es verdaderamente el Mesías?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 Pero nosotros sabemos de dónde es este; en cambio, cuando venga el Mesías, nadie sabrá de dónde es».	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 Entonces Jesús, que enseñaba en el Templo, exclamó: «¿Así que ustedes me conocen y saben de dónde soy? Sin embargo, yo no vine por mi propia cuenta; pero el que me envió dice la verdad, y ustedes no lo conocen.	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 Yo sí lo conozco, porque vengo de él y es él el que me envió».	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 Entonces quisieron detenerlo, pero nadie puso las manos sobre él, porque todavía no había llegado su hora.	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 Muchos de la multitud creyeron en él y decían: «Cuando venga el Mesías, ¿podrá hacer más signos de los que hace este hombre?».	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 Llegó a oídos de los fariseos lo que la gente comentaba de él, y enviaron guardias para detenerlo.	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 Después Jesús dijo: «Poco tiempo estaré aún con ustedes y me iré a aquel que me envió	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 Me buscarán y no me encontrarán, porque allí donde yo estoy ustedes no pueden venir».	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 Los judíos comentaban entre ellos: «¿A dónde irá, para que no podamos encontrarlo? ¿Acaso irá a reunirse con los judíos dispersos entre los paganos, para enseñar a los paganos?	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 ¿Qué quiso decir con estas palabras: «Me buscarán y no me encontrarán, y allí donde yo estoy ustedes no pueden venir»?.	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 El último día, el más solemne de la fiesta, Jesús, poniéndose de pie, exclamó: «El que tenga sed, venga a mí; y beba	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 el que cree en mí». Como dice la Escritura: "De su seno brotarán manantiales de agua viva".	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 El se refería al Espíritu que debían recibir los que creyeran en él. Porque el Espíritu no había sido dado todavía, ya que Jesús aún no había sido glorificado.	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Algunos de la multitud que lo habían oído, opinaban: «Este es verdaderamente el Profeta».	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 Otros decían: «Este es el Mesías». Pero otros preguntaban: «¿Acaso el Mesías vendrá de Galilea?	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 ¿No dice la Escritura que el Mesías vendrá del linaje de David y de Belén, el pueblo de donde era David?».	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 Y por causa de él, se produjo una división entre la gente.	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 Algunos querían detenerlo, pero nadie puso las manos sobre él.	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 Los guardias fueron a ver a los sumos sacerdotes y a los fariseos, y estos les preguntaron: «¿Por qué no lo trajeron?».	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 Ellos respondieron: «Nadie habló jamás como este hombre».	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 Los fariseos respondieron: «¿También ustedes se dejaron engañar?	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 ¿Acaso alguno de los jefes o de los fariseos ha creído en él?	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 En cambio, esa gente que no conoce la Ley está maldita».	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 Nicodemo, uno de ellos, que había ido a ver a Jesús, les dijo:	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 «¿Acaso nuestra Ley permite juzgar a un hombre sin escucharlo antes para saber lo que hizo?».	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 Le respondieron: «¿Tú también eres galileo? Examina las Escrituras y verás que de Galilea no surge ningún profeta».	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 Y cada uno regresó a su casa.	53 They al went home,
