Deuteronomio 29

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Moisés convocó a todo Israel, y le dijo: Ustedes han visto con sus propios ojos lo que el Señor hizo en Egipto al Faraón, a sus servidores y a todo su país:	1 Moses called all Israel together and said to them: 'You have seen everything that Yahweh did beforeyour eyes in Egypt, to Pharaoh, to his servants and to his whole country-
2 Las grandes hazañas que ustedes mismos han presenciado, y aquellos signos y prodigios admirables.	2 the great ordeals which you yourselves witnessed, those signs and the great wonders.
3 Pero hasta el día de hoy, el Señor no les había dado inteligencia para entender, ni ojos para ver, ni oídos para oír.	3 But until today Yahweh has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.
4 Yo los hice caminar por el desierto durante cuarenta años, sin que se les gastara la ropa que llevaban puesta ni las sandalias que tenían en los pies.	4 'I have been leading you for forty years in the desert, yet the clothes which you have been wearinghave not worn out, nor have the sandals on your feet.
5 No fue pan lo que comieron, ni vino u otro licor lo que bebieron, para que ustedes supieran que yo soy el Señor, su Dios.	5 You have had no bread to eat, you have had no wine or fermented liquor to drink, so that you wouldlearn that I, Yahweh, am your God.
6 Al llegar a este lugar, Sijón, rey de Jesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, nos salieron al encuentro para combatir, pero nosotros los derrotamos.	6 'When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to do battleagainst us; we defeated them.
7 Así conquistamos sus territorios y se los dimos en herencia a las tribus de Rubén y de Gad, y a la mitad de la tribu de Manasés.	7 We conquered their country and gave it as heritage to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
8 Por eso, observen fielmente las cláusulas de esta alianza y pónganlas en práctica, para prosperar en todas sus empresas.	8 'Keep the words of this covenant, put them into practice, and you wil thrive in everything you do.
9 Hoy todos ustedes han comparecido ante el Señor, su Dios: los jefes con sus tribus, sus ancianos y sus escribas, todos los hombres de Israel	9 'Al of you are standing here today in the presence of Yahweh your God: your tribal leaders, yourelders, your scribes, al the men of Israel,
10 con sus mujeres y sus hijos, y también los extranjeros que se han incorporado a sus campamentos, desde el leñador hasta el aguatero.	10 with your children and your wives (and the foreigner too who is in your camp, be he your wood-cutteror your water-carrier),
11 Todos están aquí para entrar en la alianza del Señor, tu Dios, esa alianza corroborada con una imprecación, que el Señor, tu Dios, hoy hace contigo,	11 and you are about to pass into the covenant of Yahweh your God, sworn with imprecation, which hehas made with you today,
12 a fin de convertirte en su pueblo y ser tu Dios, como te lo ha prometido y como lo juró a tus padres, a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob.	12 and by which, today, he makes you a nation for himself and he himself becomes a God to you, as hehas promised you, and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
13 Esta alianza, corroborada con una imprecación, no la hago sólo con ustedes.	13 Not only on your behalf am I today making this covenant and pronouncing this solemn curse,
14 La hago con aquel que hoy está aquí con nosotros delante del Señor nuestro Dios, y con aquel que no está.	14 not only on behalf of those standing here with us in the presence of Yahweh our God today, but alsoon behalf of those not here with us today.
15 Ustedes saben muy bien que nosotros estuvimos en Egipto, y que luego pasamos por varias otras naciones.	15 'Yes, you know the people with whom we used to live in Egypt, and those through whose countrieswe have travel ed -- the nations through whom we have passed.
16 Allí vieron los ídolos abominables y los fetiches que ellas tienen, y que no son más que madera y piedra, plata y otro.	16 You have seen their abominations and their idols made of wood and stone, silver and gold, whichwere there.
17 ¡Que no haya entre ustedes ni hombres ni mujer, ni clan ni tribu, cuyo corazón se aparte hoy del Señor, nuestro Dios, para ir a servir a los dioses de esas naciones! ¡Que no haya entre ustedes una raíz que produzca hierbas venenosas o ajenjo!	17 'Let there be no man or woman of you, no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from Yahweh yourGod today, to go and serve the gods of these nations. Among you let there be no root which bears poison orwormwood.
18 Porque si alguien, al oír los términos de esa imprecación, se congratula diciendo: «Todo me irá bien aunque persista en mi obstinación, ya que el terreno regado no tiene más sed»,	18 If, after hearing this imprecation, anyone, blessing himself, should say in his heart, "I shall do wellenough if I fol ow the dictates of my heart; much water drives away thirst,"
19 el Señor no lo perdonará. Al contrario, la ira y los celos del Señor se encenderán contra ese hombre, hasta que cada una de las sanciones enumeradas en este Libro caigan sobre él, y el Señor borre su nombre de la tierra.	19 Yahweh wil not pardon him. The wrath and jealousy of Yahweh wil blaze against such a person;every curse written in this book wil fal on him, and Yahweh will blot his name out under heaven.
20 El Señor lo apartará, para su desgracia, de todas las tribus de Israel, conforme a las sanciones de la alianza consignadas en el libro de esta Ley.	20 Yahweh wil single him out of al the tribes of Israel for misfortune, in accordance with al the cursesof the covenant written in the book of this Law.
21 Y las generaciones futuras –los niños que nacerán después de ustedes y los extranjeros que vendrán de tierras lejanas– verán las calamidades y las enfermedades que el Señor habrá infligido a ese país.	21 'The future generation, that of your children coming after you, and the foreigner arriving from somefar-away land, on seeing the plagues and diseases inflicted on this country by Yahweh, wil exclaim,
22 Y al ver todo su suelo devastado por el azufre y la sal, donde no se siembra ni crece nada ni brota ninguna hierba –como sucedió en la catástrofe de Sodoma y Gomorra, de Admá y Seboím, a las que él Señor destruyó en su ira y su furor–	22 "Sulphur! Salt!-The whole country is burning! No one wil sow, nothing grow, no vegetation springever again! Devastation like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboi m, devastated by Yahweh in hisfurious wrath!"
23 Todas las naciones preguntarán: «¿Por qué el Señor trató así a esta tierra? ¿De dónde procede este enojo tan tremendo?»	23 And al the nations wil exclaim, "Why has Yahweh treated this country like this? Why this great blazeof anger?"
24 Y las mismas naciones responderán: «Porque abandonaron la alianza que el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, hizo con ellos cuando los hizo salir de Egipto.	24 'And people wil say, "Because they deserted the covenant of Yahweh, God of their ancestors, thecovenant which he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt;
25 Fueron a servir a otros dioses y a postrarse delante de ellos, a dioses que no conocían y que él no les había dado en suerte.	25 because they went and served other gods and worshipped them, gods hitherto unknown to them,gods that were no part of their heritage from him:
26 Por eso el Señor se irritó contra este país y atrajo sobre él todas las maldiciones consignadas en este Libro.	26 this is why Yahweh's anger has blazed against this country, afflicting it with al the curses written inthis book.
27 El Señor los arrancó de su suelo, con enojo, furia y gran indignación, y los deportó a otra tierra, como sucede todavía hoy.	27 In anger, in fury, in fierce wrath, Yahweh has torn them from their own country and flung them intoanother country, where they are today."
28 Las cosas ocultas conciernen al Señor, nuestro Dios pero las reveladas son para nosotros y para nuestros hijos, para que practiquemos siempre todas las palabras de esta Ley.	28 Things hidden belong to Yahweh our God, but things revealed are ours and our children's for ever,so that we can put al the words of this Law into practice.'
