2 Samuel 18

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 David pasó revista a sus tropas y puso al frente de ellas jefes de mil y cien hombres.	1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.
2 Luego dio a la tropa la señal de partida: un tercio iba a las órdenes de Joab, un tercio a las órdenes de Abisai, hijo de Seruiá y hermano de Joab, y el otro tercio a las órdenes de Itai, el de Gat. El rey dijo a la tropa: «Yo también saldré con ustedes».	2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'
3 Pero la tropa respondió: «Tú no vendrás con nosotros. Porque si tenemos que huir, eso no le importaría a nadie; y aunque muriera la mitad de nosotros, tampoco nos tendrían en cuenta. Tú, en cambio, vales ahora por diez mil de nosotros. Es mejor que estés pronto a socorrernos desde la ciudad».	3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'
4 El rey les dijo: «Haré lo que les parezca bien». Y permaneció al lado de la Puerta, mientras toda la tropa salía en grupos de cien y mil hombres.	4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.
5 El rey hizo esta recomendación a Joab, Abisai e Itai: «Trátenme con cuidado al joven Absalón».	5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.
6 La tropa salió al campo abierto para enfrentarse con Israel, y se entabló batalla en el bosque de Efraím.	6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.
7 Allí el ejército de Israel cayó derrotado ante los servidores de David, y aquel día el desastre fue tan grande, que hubo veinte mil bajas.	7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.
8 Desde allí el combate se extendió a toda la región, y el bosque devoró aquel día más gente que la espada.	8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.
9 De pronto, Absalón se encontró frente a los servidores de David. Iba montado en un mulo, y este se metió bajo el tupido ramaje de una gran encina, de manera que la cabeza de Absalón quedó enganchada en la encina. Así él quedó colgado entre el cielo y la tierra, mientras el mulo seguía de largo por debajo de él.	9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.
10 Al verlo, un hombre avisó a Joab: «¡Acabo de ver a Absalón colgado de una encina!».	10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'
11 Joab replicó al hombre que le dio la noticia: «Y si lo viste, ¿por qué no lo dejaste tendido allí mismo? ¡Yo ahora te hubiera dado diez siclos de plata y un cinturón!».	11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'
12 Pero el hombre dijo a Joab: «Aunque pudiera pesar en la palma de mi mano mil siclos de plata, no atentaría contra el hijo del rey. Porque en presencia nuestra el rey les impartió esta orden, a ti, a Abisai y a Itai: «¡Cuídenme bien al joven Absalón!».	12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."
13 Y si yo hubiera atentado alevosamente contra su vida, como al rey no se le oculta nada, tú te habrías puesto contra mí».	13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'
14 Entonces Joab replicó: «No voy a perder más tiempo contigo». Y tomando en su mano tres dardos, los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, que estaba todavía vivo en medio de la encina.	14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.
15 Luego diez jóvenes, los escuderos de Joab, rodearon a Absalón y lo acabaron de matar.	15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.
16 Joab hizo sonar el cuerno y la tropa dejó de perseguir a Israel, porque Joab la retuvo.	16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.
17 Luego tomaron a Absalón, lo arrojaron en un gran pozo, en plena foresta, y pusieron encima un enorme montón de piedras. Mientras tanto, todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su carpa.	17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.
18 Absalón se había erigido en vida una piedra conmemorativa, que está en el valle del Rey. Porque él decía: «Yo no tengo un hijo para perpetuar mi nombre». A esa estela la había llamado con su nombre, y se la llama «Monumento de Absalón» hasta el día de hoy.	18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.
19 Ajimáas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: «¡Iré corriendo a llevar al rey la buena noticia de que el Señor le ha hecho justicia, librándolo de sus enemigos!».	19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'
20 Joab le respondió: «Hoy no serás portador de buenas noticias. Otro día sí lo serás, pero hoy no vas a llevar una buena noticia, porque ha muerto el hijo del rey».	20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'
21 Luego Joab dijo a un cusita: «Ve a informar al rey de lo que has visto». El cusita se postró delante de Joab y salió corriendo.	21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.
22 Ajimáas volvió a decir a Joab: «Pase lo que pase, yo también iré corriendo detrás del cusita». Joab replicó: «¿Para qué vas a correr, hijo mío? Esa buena noticia no te reportará nada bueno».	22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'
23 Pero él insistió: «¡Pase lo que pase, iré corriendo!». Entonces Joab le dijo: «Está bien, corre». Ajimáas fue corriendo por el camino del Distrito y se adelantó al cusita.	23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.
24 David estaba sentado entre las dos puertas. El centinela, que había subido a la azotea de la Puerta, encima de la muralla, alzó los ojos y vio a un hombre que corría solo.	24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.
25 El centinela lanzó un grito y avisó al rey. El rey dijo: «Si está solo, trae una buena noticia». Mientras el hombre se iba acercando,	25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'
26 el centinela divisó a otro que venía corriendo y gritó al portero: «¡Otro hombre viene corriendo solo!». El rey comentó: «Ese también trae una buena noticia».	26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'
27 Luego el centinela dijo: «Por la manera de correr, me parece que el primero es Ajimáas, hijo de Sadoc». Entonces el rey dijo: «Es una buena persona: seguro que viene con buenas noticias».	27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'
28 Cuando Ajimáas se acercó, dijo al rey: «¡Paz!». Y postrándose ante el rey con el rostro en tierra, añadió: «¡Bendito sea el Señor, tu Dios, que ha reprimido a los hombres que alzaron su mano contra el rey, mi señor!».	28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'
29 El rey preguntó: «¿Está bien él joven Absalón?». Ajimaás respondió: «Cuando me envió Joab, el servidor del rey, vi un gran tumulto, pero no sé de qué se trataba».	29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'
30 El rey le ordenó: «Retírate y quédate allí». El se retiró y se quedó de pie.	30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.
31 En seguida llegó el cusita y dijo: «¡Que mi señor, el rey, se entere de la buena noticia! El Señor hoy te ha hecho justicia, librándote de todos los que se sublevaron contra ti».	31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'
32 El rey preguntó al cusita: «¿Está bien el joven Absalón?». El cusita respondió: «¡Que tengan suerte de ese joven los enemigos de mi señor, el rey, y todos los rebeldes que buscan tu desgracia!».	32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'
