1 Les Philistins avaient donc capturé l’Arche de Dieu, ils la transportèrent d’Ében-Ha-Ézer à Ashdod.	1 When the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2 Ils prirent l’Arche de Dieu et la placèrent dans le temple de Dagon à côté de la statue de Dagon.	2 Taking the ark of God, the Philistines put it in the temple of Dagon, setting it down beside Dagon.
3 Le lendemain, lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod se levèrent, tôt le matin, et vinrent au temple de Dagon, ils virent Dagon par terre: il était tombé sur sa face devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Ils relevèrent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.	3 When the people of Ashdod got up the fol owing morning and went to the temple of Dagon, there layDagon face down on the ground before the ark of Yahweh. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place.
4 Le lendemain de bon matin, ils se levèrent et, cette fois encore, Dagon était par terre, sur le nez, devant l’Arche de Yahvé. Le tronc de Dagon était resté en place, mais la tête et les deux mains lui manquaient et gisaient sur le seuil;	4 But when they got up on the fol owing morning, there lay Dagon face down on the ground before the arkof Yahweh, and Dagon's head and two hands lay severed on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left inits place.
5 c’est d’ailleurs pour cela que les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans le temple de Dagon à Ashdod, encore aujourd’hui, ne foulent pas de leurs pieds le seuil de Dagon.	5 This is why the priests of Dagon and the people frequenting Dagon's temple never step on Dagon'sthreshold in Ashdod, even today.
6 La main de Yahvé s’abattit sur les habitants d’Ashdod, il les tourmenta et envoya des tumeurs aussi bien sur Ashdod que sur ses environs.	6 Yahweh oppressed the people of Ashdod; he ravaged them and afflicted them with tumours -- Ashdodand its territory. When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening they said,
7 Lorsque les habitants d’Ashdod virent ce qui leur arrivait, ils dirent: “Il ne faut pas que l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël reste chez nous, car il a eu la main lourde avec nous et notre Dieu Dagon.”	7 'The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, for he is oppressing us and our god Dagon.'
8 Ils firent donc avertir tous les princes des Philistins et les réunirent chez eux. Ils leur dirent: “Qu’allons-nous faire de l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël?” Les autres répondirent: “L’Arche du Dieu d’Israël ira à Gat.” On emmena donc l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël.	8 So they summoned al the Philistine chiefs to them, and said, 'What shal we do with the ark of the Godof Israel?' They decided, 'The ark of the God of Israel shal be taken away to Gath.' So they took the ark of theGod of Israel to Gath.
9 Or, dès qu’on l’eut amenée, la main de Yahvé se fit pesante sur la ville: ce fut une grande panique. Il frappa les habitants, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, et il leur sortit des tumeurs.	9 But after they had taken it there, Yahweh oppressed that town and a great panic broke out; afflicting thepeople of the town from highest to lowest, he brought them out in tumours too.
10 Ils renvoyèrent donc l’Arche de Dieu à Ékron, mais lorsque l’Arche de Dieu arriva à Ékron, les habitants de la ville s’écrièrent: “Ils nous ont amené l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël pour nous faire périr, nous et notre peuple!”	10 They then sent the ark of God to Ekron, but when it came to Ekron the Ekronites shouted, 'They havebrought me the ark of the God of Israel to kil me and my people!'
11 On rassembla donc tous les princes des Philistins: “Renvoyez l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël, dirent-ils, qu’elle retourne d’où elle vient. Sinon nous allons mourir, nous et notre peuple.” Il y avait en effet une terrible panique dans toute la ville, tellement la main de Dieu s’était faite pesante.	11 They summoned al the Philistine chiefs and said, 'Send the ark of the God of Israel away; let it goback to where it belongs and not kill me and my people' -- for there was mortal panic throughout the town; Godwas oppressing them.
12 Ceux qui ne mouraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs, et une grande lamentation montait de la ville jusqu’au ciel.	12 The people who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the wailing from the town rose to the sky.
