They welcomed him, and there he began to reign. |
| 2 Aussitôt connue la nouvelle, le roi Démétrius réunit une armée très puissante et partit en guerre contre lui. | 2 When Demetrius the king heard of it, he assembled a very large army and marched out to meet him in battle. |
| 3 Démétrius envoya à Jonathan des lettres amicales où il lui promettait de le combler d’honneurs. | 3 And Demetrius sent Jonathan a letter in peaceable words to honor him; |
| 4 Il se disait en effet: “Faisons vite la paix avec ces hommes-là avant qu’ils ne la fassent avec Alexandre contre nous, | 4 for he said, "Let us act first to make peace with him * before he makes peace with Alexander against us, |
| 5 car sûrement Jonathan n’a pas oublié tout le mal que nous lui avons fait ainsi qu’à ses frères et à sa nation.” | 5 for he will remember all the wrongs which we did to him and to his brothers and his nation." |
| 6 Il donna même à Jonathan l’autorisation de lever une armée, de fabriquer des armes, de se présenter comme son allié, et il ordonna de lui rendre les otages enfermés dans la Citadelle. | 6 So Demetrius * gave him authority to recruit troops, to equip them with arms, and to become his ally; and he commanded that the hostages in the citadel should be released to him. |
| 7 Jonathan arriva donc à Jérusalem et lut le message devant tout le peuple et devant les hommes de la Citadelle. | 7 Then Jonathan came to Jerusalem and read the letter in the hearing of all the people and of the men in the citadel. |
| 8 Lorsqu’ils entendirent que le roi l’autorisait à lever des troupes, les gens de la Citadelle eurent grand peur. | 8 They were greatly alarmed when they heard that the king had given him authority to recruit troops. |
| 9 Ils rendirent donc les otages à Jonathan qui les rendit à leurs parents. | 9 But the men in the citadel released the hostages to Jonathan, and he returned them to their parents. |
| 10 Jonathan s’installa à Jérusalem et commença à rebâtir et à réparer la ville. | 10 And Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem and began to rebuild and restore the city. |
| 11 Il donna en particulier des instructions aux entrepreneurs de travaux pour reconstruire le rempart et le pourtour du mont Sion avec des pierres de taille, pour que ce soit une défense; c’est ce que l’on fit. | 11 He directed those who were doing the work to build the walls and encircle Mount Zion with squared stones, for better fortification; and they did so. |
| 12 Les étrangers qui occupaient les forteresses construites par Bakidès prirent la fuite: | 12 Then the foreigners who were in the strongholds that Bacchides had built fled; |
| 13 ils abandonnèrent leur poste et s’en retournèrent dans leur pays. | 13 each left his place and departed to his own land. |
| 14 À Beth-Sour cependant, on laissa quelques hommes qui avaient abandonné la Loi et les préceptes, on le considéra comme un lieu de refuge. | 14 Only in Beth-zur did some remain who had forsaken the law and the commandments, for it served as a place of refuge. |
| 15 Le roi Alexandre apprit les promesses que Démétrius avait faites à Jonathan; on lui raconta les guerres et les exploits dans lesquels lui et ses frères s’étaient distingués, ainsi que les épreuves qu’ils avaient endurées. | 15 Now Alexander the king heard of all the promises which Demetrius had sent to Jonathan, and men told him of the battles that Jonathan * and his brothers had fought, of the brave deeds that they had done, and of the troubles that they had endured. |
| 16 Alors le roi s’écria: “Trouverons-nous jamais un homme comme lui? Faisons de lui notre ami et notre allié.” | 16 So he said, "Shall we find another such man? Come now, we will make him our friend and ally." |
| 17 Il lui écrivit donc une lettre ainsi rédigée: | 17 And he wrote a letter and sent it to him, in the following words: |
| 18 “Le roi Alexandre salue son frère Jonathan. | 18 "King Alexander to his brother Jonathan, greeting. |
| 19 On nous a fait savoir que tu es un homme de grande valeur, tu mérites de devenir notre ami. | 19 We have heard about you, that you are a mighty warrior and worthy to be our friend. |
| 20 C’est pourquoi nous faisons de toi aujourd’hui le grand prêtre de ta nation, et nous te donnons le titre d’Ami du roi - en même temps il lui envoyait le manteau de pourpre et la couronne d’or - ainsi tu seras l’un des nôtres et tu nous garderas ton amitié.” | 20 And so we have appointed you today to be the high priest of your nation; you are to be called the king's friend" (and he sent him a purple robe and a golden crown) "and you are to take our side and keep friendship with us." |
| 21 Voilà comment, au septième mois de l’an 160, pour la fête des Tentes, Jonathan revêtit les habits sacrés; il rassembla des troupes et fabriqua beaucoup d’armes. | 21 So Jonathan put on the holy garments in the seventh month of the one hundred and sixtieth year, * at the feast of tabernacles, and he recruited troops and equipped them with arms in abundance. |
| 22 Démétrius fut très contrarié de tout cela: | 22 When Demetrius heard of these things he was grieved and said, |
| 23 “Qu’avons-nous fait? dit-il, Alexandre a été plus vite que nous pour se gagner l’amitié des Juifs et renforcer sa position. | 23 "What is this that we have done? Alexander has gotten ahead of us in forming a friendship with the Jews to strengthen himself. |
| 24 Moi aussi je vais leur écrire et les persuader en leur offrant des honneurs et des bénéfices, pour qu’ils viennent à mon aide.” | 24 I also will write them words of encouragement and promise them honor and gifts, that I may have their help." |
| 25 Il leur écrivit donc ceci: “Le roi Démétrius salue la nation des Juifs. | 25 So he sent a message to them in the following words: "King Demetrius to the nation of the Jews, greeting. |
| 26 Vous avez respecté les accords passés avec nous et vous nous avez gardé votre amitié au lieu de passer du côté de nos ennemis: nous l’avons appris et nous en sommes très heureux. | 26 Since you have kept your agreement with us and have continued your friendship with us, and have not sided with our enemies, we have heard of it and rejoiced. |
| 27 Restez-nous donc fidèles et nous saurons récompenser ce que vous faites pour nous. | 27 And now continue still to keep faith with us, and we will repay you with good for what you do for us. |
| 28 Nous vous déchargerons de beaucoup d’obligations et nous vous ferons des faveurs. | 28 We will grant you many immunities and give you gifts. |
| 29 Dès aujourd’hui, je dispense tous les Juifs et je leur fais remise des impôts, des droits sur le sel et de la taxe royale. | 29 "And now I free you and exempt all the Jews from payment of tribute and salt tax and crown levies, |
| 30 Le tiers des produits du sol et la moitié des fruits des arbres qui jusqu’ici me revenaient, je cesse de les prélever dès aujourd’hui et pour toujours dans le pays de Juda et les trois districts de la Samarie-Galilée qui lui sont annexés. | 30 and instead of collecting the third of the grain and the half of the fruit of the trees that I should receive, I release them from this day and henceforth. I will not collect them from the land of Judah or from the three districts added to it from Samaria and Galilee, from this day and for all time. |
| 31 Jérusalem sera une ville sainte, dispensée de dîmes et de droits de même que sa banlieue. | 31 And let Jerusalem and her environs, her tithes and her revenues, be holy and free from tax. |
| 32 Je renonce à la possession de la Citadelle de Jérusalem et je la donne au grand prêtre; il choisira lui-même les hommes chargés de la garder. | 32 I release also my control of the citadel in Jerusalem and give it to the high priest, that he may station in it men of his own choice to guard it. |
| 33 Je rends la liberté sans rançon à toute personne d’origine juive emmenée en dehors du pays de Juda et maintenant captive où que ce soit dans mon royaume. Tous seront dispensés d’impôts, même sur les bêtes. | 33 And every one of the Jews taken as a captive from the land of Judah into any part of my kingdom, I set free without payment; and let all officials cancel also the taxes on their cattle. |
| 34 Je veux que toutes les fêtes, les sabbats, les nouvelles lunes, les jours fixés par la Loi et les trois jours qui précèdent et qui suivent, soient des jours où l’on remettra les dettes et les droits d’octroi pour tous les Juifs de mon royaume. | 34 "And all the feasts and sabbaths and new moons and appointed days, and the three days before a feast and the three after a feast -- let them all be days of immunity and release for all the Jews who are in my kingdom. |
| 35 Durant ces jours personne ne pourra exiger un paiement ou inquiéter un Juif pour quelque affaire que ce soit. | 35 No one shall have authority to exact anything from them or annoy any of them about any matter. |
| 36 Les armées royales recruteront parmi les Juifs jusqu’à 30 000 soldats qui recevront la même solde que les autres troupes du roi. | 36 "Let Jews be enrolled in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men, and let the maintenance be given them that is due to all the forces of the king. |
| 37 On en placera dans les forteresses royales les plus importantes, ainsi que dans les emplois de confiance du royaume. Ceux qui veilleront sur eux et leurs chefs sortiront de leurs rangs et vivront selon leur Loi, comme le roi en a donné l’ordre pour tout le pays de Juda. | 37 Let some of them be stationed in the great strongholds of the king, and let some of them be put in positions of trust in the kingdom. Let their officers and leaders be of their own number, and let them live by their own laws, just as the king has commanded in the land of Judah. |
| 38 Les trois districts qui ont été rattachés à la Judée aux dépens de la province de Samarie, seront annexés à la Judée; on les regardera comme relevant d’un seul homme, n’obéissant à personne d’autre que le grand prêtre. | 38 "As for the three districts that have been added to Judea from the country of Samaria, let them be so annexed to Judea that they are considered to be under one ruler and obey no other authority but the high priest. |
| 39 Je donne la ville de Ptolémaïs et le territoire qui s’y rattache au Temple de Jérusalem pour assurer les dépenses nécessitées par le culte. | 39 Ptolemais and the land adjoining it I have given as a gift to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet the necessary expenses of the sanctuary. |
| 40 Personnellement je donnerai chaque année 15 000 pièces d’argent; on les prendra sur la part qui revient au roi dans des lieux à désigner. | 40 I also grant fifteen thousand shekels of silver yearly out of the king's revenues from appropriate places. |
| 41 Les fonctionnaires donneront désormais pour les travaux du Temple, tout le surplus qu’ils n’ont pas versé, comme dans les années précédentes. | 41 And all the additional funds which the government officials have not paid as they did in the first years, * they shall give from now on for the service of the temple. * |
| 42 On prélevait autrefois chaque année sur les comptes et revenus du Temple 5 000 pièces d’argent; désormais cette redevance est abandonnée au profit des prêtres qui font le service liturgique. | 42 Moreover, the five thousand shekels of silver which my officials * have received every year from the income of the services of the temple, this too is canceled, because it belongs to the priests who minister there. |
| 43 Si quelqu’un est poursuivi pour une dette envers le trésor royal ou pour toute autre dette, et s’il se réfugie dans Jérusalem ou dans ses limites, il sera libre ainsi que tous les biens qu’il possède dans mon royaume. | 43 And whoever takes refuge at the temple in Jerusalem, or in any of its precincts, because he owes money to the king or has any debt, let him be released and receive back all his property in my kingdom. |
| 44 Les dépenses nécessitées par les travaux de construction ou de restauration du Temple seront prélevées sur le compte du roi. | 44 "Let the cost of rebuilding and restoring the structures of the sanctuary be paid from the revenues of the king. |
| 45 On prélèvera encore sur le compte du roi l’argent nécessaire pour reconstruire les murs de Jérusalem, fortifier son enceinte et relever les remparts des villes de Judée.” | 45 And let the cost of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and fortifying it round about, and the cost of rebuilding the walls in Judea, also be paid from the revenues of the king." |
| 46 Lorsque Jonathan et le peuple entendirent ces paroles, ils ne les crurent pas et refusèrent de leur accorder confiance: ils se rappelaient trop bien le mal que Démétrius avait fait à Israël et comment il les avait opprimés. | 46 When Jonathan and the people heard these words, they did not believe or accept them, because they remembered the great wrongs which Demetrius * had done in Israel and how he had greatly oppressed them. |
| 47 Ils choisirent le parti d’Alexandre car ils y voyaient plus d’avantages et ils furent ses fidèles alliés. | 47 They favored Alexander, because he had been the first to speak peaceable words to them, and they remained his allies all his days. |
| 48 Le roi Alexandre rassembla alors une grande armée et s’avança contre Démétrius; | 48 Now Alexander the king assembled large forces and encamped opposite Demetrius. |
| 49 les deux rois engagèrent la bataille et l’armée de Démétrius tourna le dos. Alexandre la poursuivit et prit l’avantage sur elle. | 49 The two kings met in battle, and the army of Demetrius fled, and Alexander * pursued him and defeated them. |
| 50 Il combattit énergiquement jusqu’au coucher du soleil, et Démétrius fut tué ce même jour. | 50 He pressed the battle strongly until the sun set, and Demetrius fell on that day. |
| 51 Alors Alexandre envoya au roi d’Égypte, Ptolémée, des ambassadeurs pour lui dire: | 51 Then Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt with the following message: |
| 52 “Je suis revenu dans mon royaume et je me suis assis sur le trône de mes pères. Je me suis emparé du pouvoir, j’ai écrasé Démétrius et j’ai pris possession de mon pays. | 52 "Since I have returned to my kingdom and have taken my seat on the throne of my fathers, and established my rule -- for I crushed Demetrius and gained control of our country; |
| 53 En effet, je lui ai livré bataille et il ont été écrasés par nous, lui et son armée. Maintenant que je suis monté sur son trône royal, | 53 I met him in battle, and he and his army were crushed by us, and we have taken our seat on the throne of his kingdom-- |
| 54 faisons ensemble un traité d’amitié. Donne-moi ta fille comme épouse, je serai ton gendre et je te ferai comme à elle des cadeaux dignes de toi.” | 54 now therefore let us establish friendship with one another; give me now your daughter as my wife, and I will become your son-in-law, and will make gifts to you and to her in keeping with your position." |
| 55 Le roi Ptolémée répondit ainsi: “Que le jour où tu es rentré dans le pays de tes pères et où tu as occupé le trône royal soit béni! | 55 Ptolemy the king replied and said, "Happy was the day on which you returned to the land of your fathers and took your seat on the throne of their kingdom. |
| 56 Je vais faire pour toi ce que tu m’as demandé, mais viens à ma rencontre à Ptolémaïs pour que nous nous voyions l’un l’autre, et ensuite je serai ton beau-père comme tu l’as dit.” | 56 And now I will do for you as you wrote, but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we may see one another, and I will become your father-in-law, as you have said." |
| 57 Ptolémée partit d’Égypte avec sa fille Cléopâtre, il arriva à Ptolémaïs en l’an 162. | 57 So Ptolemy set out from Egypt, he and Cleopatra his daughter, and came to Ptolemais in the one hundred and sixty-second year. * |
| 58 Le roi Alexandre vint à la rencontre de Ptolémée qui lui donna sa fille Cléopâtre, et l’on célébra le mariage à Ptolémaïs avec beaucoup de solennité, comme il convient à des rois. | 58 Alexander the king met him, and Ptolemy * gave him Cleopatra his daughter in marriage, and celebrated her wedding at Ptolemais with great pomp, as kings do. |
| 59 Le roi Alexandre écrivit à Jonathan de venir le retrouver, | 59 Then Alexander the king wrote to Jonathan to come to meet him. |
| 60 Jonathan se rendit donc à Ptolémaïs en grand cortège. Il rencontra les deux rois, il leur donna ainsi qu’à leurs amis de l’argent et de l’or, il distribua de nombreux cadeaux et acquit leur faveur. | 60 So he went with pomp to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friends silver and gold and many gifts, and found favor with them. |
| 61 Des renégats, la peste d’Israël, étaient venus en groupe pour se plaindre de lui, mais le roi ne leur prêta aucune attention. | 61 A group of pestilent men from Israel, lawless men, gathered together against him to accuse him; but the king paid no attention to them. |
| 62 Il ordonna même de faire changer ses habits à Jonathan pour l’habiller de pourpre, ce que l’on fit. | 62 The king gave orders to take off Jonathan's garments and to clothe him in purple, and they did so. |
| 63 Le roi le fit ensuite asseoir près de lui et il dit à ses ministres: “Allez avec lui en ville et proclamez bien ceci: Que personne ne vienne se plaindre de lui pour quelque affaire que ce soit et que personne ne lui cherche d’ennui pour aucune raison.” | 63 The king also seated him at his side; and he said to his officers, "Go forth with him into the middle of the city and proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him about any matter, and let no one annoy him for any reason." |
| 64 Quand ses accusateurs virent les honneurs qu’on lui rendait et la pourpre royale sur ses épaules, quand ils entendirent la proclamation qui était faite, ils prirent tous la fuite. | 64 And when his accusers saw the honor that was paid him, in accordance with the proclamation, and saw him clothed in purple, they all fled. |
| 65 Le roi lui fit l’honneur de le compter parmi ses premiers Amis et il l’institua grand chef et gouverneur, | 65 Thus the king honored him and enrolled him among his chief friends, and made him general and governor of the province. |
| 66 après quoi Jonathan revint tout joyeux à Jérusalem, sain et sauf. | 66 And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness. |
| 67 En l’an 165, Démétrius fils de Démétrius arriva de Crète au pays de ses pères. | 67 In the one hundred and sixty-fifth year * Demetrius the son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his fathers. |
| 68 Quand le roi Alexandre l’apprit, il fut très contrarié et il rentra à Antioche. | 68 When Alexander the king heard of it, he was greatly grieved and returned to Antioch. |
| 69 Démétrius confirma Apollonius dans la charge de gouverneur de Cœlé-Syrie, et celui-ci rassembla une puissante armée. Il fit dresser son camp à Jamnia et envoya dire ceci au grand prêtre Jonathan: | 69 And Demetrius appointed Apollonius the governor of Coelesyria, and he assembled a large force and encamped against Jamnia. Then he sent the following message to Jonathan the high priest: |
| 70 “Veux-tu être le seul à prendre parti contre nous? Ne vois-tu pas qu’on se moque de moi et qu’on m’insulte à cause de toi? Pourquoi veux-tu commander seul sans nous dans tes montagnes? | 70 "You are the only one to rise up against us, and I have become a laughingstock and reproach because of you. Why do you assume authority against us in the hill country? |
| 71 Si tu es si confiant dans ton armée, descends donc vers nous dans la plaine, et là nous nous mesurerons, car j’ai avec moi l’armée des villes. | 71 If you now have confidence in your forces, come down to the plain to meet us, and let us match strength with each other there, for I have with me the power of the cities. |
| 72 Renseigne-toi et tu sauras qui je suis et qui sont ceux qui sont avec moi; on me dit que vous ne pourrez pas nous résister puisque par deux fois tes pères ont été mis en fuite dans leur propre pays. | 72 Ask and learn who I am and who the others are that are helping us. Men will tell you that you cannot stand before us, for your fathers were twice put to flight in their own land. |
| 73 Maintenant tu ne pourras pas tenir devant ma cavalerie et une armée si puissante, dans cette plaine où il n’y a ni rocher, ni pierre, ni chemin, pour s’enfuir.” | 73 And now you will not be able to withstand my cavalry and such an army in the plain, where there is no stone or pebble, or place to flee." |
| 74 Lorsque Jonathan entendit les paroles d’Apollonius, il fut très secoué. Il recruta 10 000 hommes et partit de Jérusalem; son frère Simon vint le rejoindre et lui prêter main-forte. | 74 When Jonathan heard the words of Apollonius, his spirit was aroused. He chose ten thousand men and set out from Jerusalem, and Simon his brother met him to help him. |
| 75 Il établit son camp en face de Joppé; les gens de la ville lui fermèrent leurs portes, car il y avait dans Joppé une garnison d’Apollonius. On attaqua la ville: | 75 He encamped before Joppa, but the men of the city closed its gates, for Apollonius had a garrison in Joppa. |
| 76 pris de peur, les habitants de Joppé ouvrirent les portes et Jonathan se rendit maître de la ville. | 76 So they fought against it, and the men of the city became afraid and opened the gates, and Jonathan gained possession of Joppa. |
| 77 Quand Apollonius apprit cela, il équipa 3 000 cavaliers et une nombreuse infanterie et il prit la direction d’Azotos comme s’il voulait traverser le pays. Il s’enfonçait ainsi dans la plaine, confiant dans l’importance de sa cavalerie. | 77 When Apollonius heard of it, he mustered three thousand cavalry and a large army, and went to Azotus as though he were going farther. At the same time he advanced into the plain, for he had a large troop of cavalry and put confidence in it. |
| 78 Jonathan le poursuivit en direction d’Azotos et les deux armées engagèrent la bataille. | 78 Jonathan * pursued him to Azotus, and the armies engaged in battle. |
| 79 Apollonius avait laissé 1 000 cavaliers cachés derrière lui, | 79 Now Apollonius had secretly left a thousand cavalry behind them. |
| 80 mais Jonathan apprit l’existence de cette embuscade dans son dos. Les cavaliers entourèrent son armée et lancèrent sur elle leurs flèches depuis le matin jusqu’au soir. | 80 Jonathan learned that there was an ambush behind him, for they surrounded his army and shot arrows at his men from early morning till late afternoon. |
| 81 L’armée résista comme Jonathan en avait donné l’ordre, pendant que les chevaux de l’ennemi se fatiguaient. | 81 But his men stood fast, as Jonathan commanded, and the enemy's * horses grew tired. |
| 82 Une fois la cavalerie épuisée, Simon lança ses troupes à l’attaque des bataillons. Les ennemis furent enfoncés et s’enfuirent | 82 Then Simon brought forward his force and engaged the phalanx in battle (for the cavalry was exhausted); they were overwhelmed by him and fled, |

| 84 Mais Jonathan incendia Azotos et les villes des environs; il ramassa tout sur le terrain et brûla le temple de Dagon avec tous ceux qui s’y étaient réfugiés. | 84 But Jonathan burned Azotus and the surrounding towns and plundered them; and the temple of Dagon, and those who had taken refuge in it he burned with fire. |
| 85 Le nombre de ceux qui étaient tombés sous l’épée ou avaient été brûlés atteignait les 8 000. | 85 The number of those who fell by the sword, with those burned alive, came to eight thousand men. |
| 86 Jonathan partit de là et dressa son camp près d’Ascalon; les habitants de cette ville sortirent à sa rencontre et le reçurent avec beaucoup d’égards. | 86 Then Jonathan departed from there and encamped against Askalon, and the men of the city came out to meet him with great pomp. |
| 87 Jonathan revint ensuite à Jérusalem avec ses compagnons ramenant un immense butin. | 87 And Jonathan and those with him returned to Jerusalem with much booty. |
| 88 Lorsque le roi Alexandre apprit cela, il accorda de nombreux honneurs à Jonathan. | 88 When Alexander the king heard of these things, he honored Jonathan still more; |
| 89 Il lui envoya une agrafe d’or comme cela se fait pour les parents des rois, et il lui donna en propriété Akaron avec tous ses environs. | 89 and he sent to him a golden buckle, such as it is the custom to give to the kinsmen of kings. He also gave him Ekron and all its environs as his possession. |
