1 Ogni amico dirà; feci amistade. Ma elli è amico per lo nome solo. Or non hai tu tristizia (di cotale amico) di qui alla morte?	1 Every friend saith, I am his friend also: but there is a friend, which is only a friend in name.
2 Il compagno della mensa e l'amico si convertono a nimistade.	2 Is it not a grief unto death, when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy?
3 O presunzione malvagissima! onde se' tu creata di coprire l'arida malizia e lo inganno di colui?	3 O wicked imagination, whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit?
4 Il compagno (nella mensa) nel diletto s' allegrerae coll' amico; e nel tempo della tribulazione fia suo avversario.	4 There is a companion, which rejoiceth in the prosperity of a friend, but in the time of trouble will be against him.
5 Questo compagno (non) si conduole per lo amico, per cagione del ventre; contro allo nimico prenderae lo scudo.	5 There is a companion, which helpeth his friend for the belly, and taketh up the buckler against the enemy.
6 Non ti dimenticare l'amico tuo nell' animo tuo; e non dimenticherai di colui nelle opere tue.	6 Forget not thy friend in thy mind, and be not unmindful of him in thy riches.
7 Non ti consigliare col suocero tuo; di coloro che sono gelosi nascondi il consiglio tuo.	7 Every counsellor extolleth counsel; but there is some that counselleth for himself.
8 Ogni consigliere manifesta il consiglio; ma egli è anco consigliere in sè medesimo.	8 Beware of a counsellor, and know before what need he hath; for he will counsel for himself; lest he cast the lot upon thee,
9 Guarda l'anima tua dallo (reo) consigliere; sappi prima quale sia la sua necessitade; ed elli penserà	9 And say unto thee, Thy way is good: and afterward he stand on the other side, to see what shall befall thee.
10 forse di (non) mettere la pertica nella terra e dirae a te:	10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee: and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee.
11 Buona è la via tua; e staratti dirimpetto per vedere quello che t'avviene.	11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous; neither with a coward in matters of war; nor with a merchant concerning exchange; nor with a buyer of selling; nor with an envious man of thankfulness; nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness; nor with the slothful for any work; nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work; nor with an idle servant of much business: hearken not unto these in any matter of counsel.
12 Con l'uomo irreligioso tratta della santitade, e collo ingiusto della giustizia, e colla femina di quelle cose ch' ella invidia; col pauroso della guerra; col mercatante tratta di passare altrove (per la mercatanzia ch' elli hae); col comperatore tratta della vendita, collo invidioso, di quelle cose che si vogliono donare;	12 But be continually with a godly man, whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord, whose, mind is according to thy mind, and will sorrow with thee, if thou shalt miscarry.
13 collo crudele, della pietade, col disonesto, della onestade, collo lavoratore de' campi, di tutti li tempi;	13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand: for there is no man more faithful unto thee than it.
14 collo operaio che sta per anno, dello compimento dello anno; col pigro servo, di molto lavorare; non credere a costoro in ogni consiglio.	14 For a man's mind is sometime wont to tell him more than seven watchmen, that sit above in an high tower.
15 Ma sii continuo con l' uomo santo; con qualunque tu conoscerai che guardi il timore di Dio,	15 And above all this pray to the most High, that he will direct thy way in truth.
16 e la cui anima è secondo l'anima tua, e che quando vacillerai nelle tenebre, (non) averae compassione di te.	16 Let reason go before every enterprize, and counsel before every action.
17 E ordina teco cuore di buono consiglio; non ti sia alcuna cosa più cara di quello.	17 The countenance is a sign of changing of the heart.
18 L'anima dell' uomo santo annunzia alcuna volta cose vere, più che li sette savi che seggono alti alla vista.	18 Four manner of things appear: good and evil, life and death: but the tongue ruleth over them continually.
19 E in tutte queste cose priega l' Altissimo, che dirizzi la via tua nella veritade.	19 There is one that is wise and teacheth many, and yet is unprofitable to himself.
20 Inanzi a tutte l' opere tue, vera parola vadi dinanzi da te; e proceda stabile consiglio inanzi a ogni atto.	20 There is one that sheweth wisdom in words, and is hated: he shall be destitute of all food.
21 La malvagia parola cambierae il cuore; dello quale quattro parti nascono: bene e male, vita e morte; e la continua lingua sì è loro signoreggiatrice	21 For grace is not given, him from the Lord, because he is deprived of all wisdom.
22 L'uomo savio molti ammaestroe, ed è suave della sua anima.	22 Another is wise to himself; and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth.
23 Colui che parla sofisticamente, sì è odioso; in ogni cosa ingannarae.	23 A wise man instructeth his people; and the fruits of his understanding fail not.
24 Non è a lui data grazia da Dio; ogni sapienza hae fraudata.	24 A wise man shall be filled with blessing; and all they that see him shall count him happy.
25 Il savio è savio dell' anima sua; il frutto del suo senno sì è laudabile.	25 The days of the life of man may be numbered: but the days of Israel are innumerable.
26 L'uomo savio ammaestra il suo popolo, e li frutti del senno suo sono fedeli.	26 A wise man shall inherit glory among his people, and his name shall be perpetual.
27 L'uomo savio si empierae di benedizioni, e coloro che il vederanno, il loderanno.	27 My son, prove thy soul in thy life, and see what is evil for it, and give not that unto it.
28 La vita dell' uomo si è numero di dì; ma li dì (del popolo) d' Israel sono innumerabili.	28 For all things are not profitable for all men, neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing.
29 Il savio nel popolo erediterà onore; il nome suo sarà vivente in eterno.	29 Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing, nor too greedy upon meats:
30 Figliuolo, nella vita tua cerca l'anima tua; e s'ella fia rea, non le dare signoria.	30 For excess of meats bringeth sickness, and surfeiting will turn into choler.
31 Però che tutte le cose non si convengono a ciascuno, e non piace a ciascuna anima ogni generazione.	31 By surfeiting have many perished; but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life.
32 Non essere desideroso in ogni mangiare, e non ti gettare su ciascuna vivanda.
33 In molti mangiari fia infirmitade; il desiderio s' appresserà infino alla collera.
34 Molti morirono per lo soperchio mangiare; e a colui che s'astiene cresce la vita.
