1 Quando le mosche muoiono, sì perdono la (loro) soavità dell' unguento. Più degna cosa è la sapienza, che la piccola gloria di stoltizia, la quale dura alcuno tempo.	1 Dying flies ruin the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a brief and limited foolishness.
2 Il cuore del savio sta nella mano diritta, e quello dello stolto sta nella mano manca.	2 The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a foolish man is in his left hand.
3 Da che lo stolto passa per la via, perchè egli è insipido, e' crede che ogni uomo sia stolto.	3 Moreover, as a foolish man is walking along the way, even though he himself is unwise, he considers everyone to be foolish.
4 Non lasciare il tuo luogo, perchè ti vegna adosso ardire di persona che abbia signoria; però cho castigamento ti fa partire da molti gravi peccati.	4 If the spirit of one who holds authority rises over you, do not leave your place, because attentiveness will cause the greatest sins to cease.
5 Anche è un (altro grande) male che io vidi sotto il sole, che usciva per errore dalla faccia del principe;	5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, proceeding from the presence of a prince, as if by mistake:
6 cioè che lo stolto era posto in grande stato; e li ricchi (di sapienza) seggono alli piedi delli stolti.	6 a foolish man appointed to a high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath him.
7 E vidi li servi andare a cavallo, e li prìncipi (e li signori) andavano a piedi, come fanti di coloro, sopra la terra.	7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking on the ground like servants.
8 Chi cava la fossa, alcuna volta sì vi cade dentro; chi disfa le siepi sarà morso dal serpente.	8 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it. And whoever tears apart a hedge, a snake will bite him.
9 Chi trascina pietre, (tra loro) vi perisce dentro; e chi spezza legne (alcuna volta v' incappa dentro, che) è percosso da esse.	9 Whoever carries away stones will be harmed by them. And whoever cuts down trees will be wounded by them.
10 Se gli ferri si rintuzzeranno, (male taglieranno poi), e s' egli saranno poi bolsi, con grande fatica si dirizzeranno; e dopo lo scaltrimento viene. la sapienza.	10 If the iron is dull, and if it was not that way before, but has been made dull by much labor, then it will be sharpened. And wisdom will follow after diligence.
11 Chi dice villania dietro altrui, fa come la serpe che morde di nascoso.	11 Whoever slanders in secret is nothing less than a snake that bites silently.
12 Le parole della bocca del savio fanno l'uomo grazioso; e quelle degli stolti sì gli fanno precipitare.	12 Words from the mouth of a wise man are graceful, but the lips of a foolish man will throw him down with violence.
13 Imperò ch' egli cominciarono a favellare stoltizia, e restano con pessimo errore.	13 At the beginning of his words is foolishness, and at the end of his talk is a most grievous error.
14 Onde lo stolto pure semina molte parole. Non sa l'uomo che andò dinanzi, e che viene di dietro; or chi gli puote insegnare?	14 The fool multiplies his words. A man does not know what has been before him, and who is able to reveal to him what will be in the future after him?
15 E però la fatica loro sì (gli) farà affliggere coloro che non sanno ire per cittadi (sono di grossa natura).	15 The hardship of the foolish will afflict those who do not know to go into the city.
16 Guai alla terra, dove il fanciullo è re (e per signore), e dove li suoi prìncipi mangiano per tempo la mattina.	16 Woe to you, the land whose king is a boy, and whose princes consume in the morning.
17 Beata è quella terra, dove il re sia bene costumato, e gli baroni suoi mangino all' ora debita, e non per lussuria, ma per bisogno di vita.	17 Blessed is the land whose king is noble, and whose princes eat at the proper time, for refreshment and not for self-indulgence.
18 Per pigrizia s' infracida il legname del tetto; e per la infermità delle mani pioverà in casa.	18 By laziness, a framework shall be brought down, and by the weakness of hands, a house shall collapse through.
19 E ridendo fanno il pane e il vino per mangiare e per bere; ogni cosa ubidisce alla pecunia.	19 While laughing, they make bread and wine, so that the living may feast. And all things are obedient to money.
20 Non dire villania del re di nascoso, e non biastemare il ricco nella camera tua, (abbiendo speranza che non sia loro ridetto); però che li uccelli, che volano, tutti ridiranno la voce tua, e gridaranno.	20 You should not slander the king, even in your thoughts, and you should not speak evil of a wealthy man, even in your private chamber. For even the birds of the air will carry your voice, and whatever has wings will announce your opinion.
