| 1 Non essere avventato nel parlare e il tuo cuore non abbia furia di proferir parole davanti a Dio. Dio è nel cielo e tu sei sulla terra, perciò sian pochi i tuoi discorsi. | 1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God; to draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know that they are doing evil. |
| 2 Dai molti affanni vengono i sogni e nei molti discorsi si trova la stoltezza. | 2 Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven, and you upon earth; therefore let your words be few. |
| 3 Se hai fatto a Dio qualche voto, non ritardarne l'adempimento, perchè a lui dispiace la bugiarda e stolta promessa. Tu mantieni quanto hai promesso con voto; | 3 For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with many words. |
| 4 perchè è molto meglio non far voti, che, fatto il voto, non adempire quanto si è promesso. | 4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it; for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. |
| 5 Non permettere alla tua bocca di renderti colpevole, e non dire dinanzi all'angelo: « Non ci fu avvertenza », chè Dio, sdegnato per le tue parole, non distrugga tutte le opere delle tue mani. | 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. |
| 6 Dove ci sono molti sogni, vi son moltissime vanità e chiacchiere senza numero; ma tu temi Dio. | 6 Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake; why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands? |
| 7 Se vedrai oppressi i miserabili e violato il diritto e la giustizia a rovescio nel paese, non ti meravigliare di ciò, perchè chi sta in alto ci ha un altro più alto di lui, e sopra questi ve ne sono altri ancora più in alto, | 7 For when dreams increase, empty words grow many: but do you fear God. |
| 8 e di più v'è il re che comanda a tutta la terra a lui soggetta. | 8 If you see in a province the poor oppressed and justice and right violently taken away, do not be amazed at the matter; for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. |
| 9 L'avaro non sarà mai sazio di danaro, e chi ama le ricchezze non ne caverà alcun frutto. Anche questo è vanità. | 9 But in all, a king is an advantage to a land with cultivated fields. |
| 10 Dove son molte ricchezze, vi sono anche molti a mangiarle, e che utile ne ha il padrone, oltre quello di starle a guardare coi propri occhi? | 10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money; nor he who loves wealth, with gain: this also is vanity. |
| 11 Dolce è il sonno del lavoratore, poco o molto ch'ei mangi; ma la sazietà non lascia dormire il ricco. | 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them; and what gain has their owner but to see them with his eyes? |
| 12 C'è anche un altro disgraziatissimo guaio che io ho visto sotto il sole: le ricchezze accumulate a rovina del loro padrone. | 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let him sleep. |
| 13 Se ne vanno in fumo per terribile sventura; egli ha messo al mondo un figlio che sarà in estrema miseria; | 13 There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, |
| 14 come nudo è uscito dal seno della madre, così nudo vi ritornerà, e di tutte le sue fatiche non porterà seco niente. | 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture; and he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. |
| 15 Miseria certo degna di compassione! Come venne, così partirà. E che gli giova l'essersi affaticato per del vento? | 15 As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil, which he may carry away in his hand. |
| 16 Per tutti i giorni della sua vita egli mangiò tra le tenebre, tra molti affanni, nell'angustia, nella tristezza. | 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go; and what gain has he that he toiled for the wind, |
| 17 Quindi mi sembra bene che uno mangi e beva e goda con gioia i frutti della sua fatica, che ha sopportata sotto il sole per tutti i giorni della sua vita, assegnatigli da Dio. E questa è la sua sorte. | 17 and spent all his days in darkness and grief, in much vexation and sickness and resentment? |
| 18 Or quando Dio dà a un uomo ricchezze e beni, gli dà anche facoltà di mangiarne, di goderne la sua parte, di gioire del frutto del suo lavoro: questo è dono di Dio. | 18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and to be fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life which God has given him, for this is his lot. |
| 19 Allora egli non si ricorderà troppo dei giorni della sua vita, perchè Dio gl'inonda il cuore di gioia. | 19 Every man also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and find enjoyment in his toil--this is the gift of God. |
| 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. |
