| 1 « Ascolta dunque, o Giobbe, le mie parole, e poni mente a tutti i miei discorsi. | 1 "But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. |
| 2 Ecco, ho aperta la mia bocca, la mia lingua già parla sotto il mio palato, | 2 Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. |
| 3 i miei discorsi verranno da un cuore schietto, e le mie labbra proferiranno la pura verità. | 3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. |
| 4 Lo Spirito di Dio mi ha fatto, e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi ha dato la vita. | 4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. |
| 5 Se puoi, rispondimi, e stai pronto a contraddirmi. | 5 Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. |
| 6 Ecco, Dio ha fatto me come te, e anch'io sono stato formato del medesimo fango: | 6 Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was formed from a piece of clay. |
| 7 quindi ciò che v'ha di mirabile in me non ti spaventi, e la mia eloquenza non ti sia grave. | 7 Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. |
| 8 Tu dunque hai detto in mia presenza, ed io ho ben sentito il suono delle tue parole: | 8 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words. |
| 9 Io sono puro e senza peccato, sono immacolato, e in me non v'è iniquità. | 9 You say, 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me. |
| 10 Egli ha trovato dei pretesti contro di me, e mi ha considerato come suo nemico. | 10 Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy; |
| 11 Ha posto i miei piedi nei ceppi, ha spiate tutte le mie vie. | 11 he puts my feet in the stocks, and watches all my paths.' |
| 12 In questo però tu non hai ragione, ed io ti risponderò che Dio è più grande dell'uomo. | 12 "Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you. God is greater than man. |
| 13 Tu te la rendi contro Dio, perchè egli non ha risposto a tutte le tue parole? | 13 Why do you contend against him, saying, 'He will answer none of my words'? |
| 14 Dio parla una volta sola, e non ripete una seconda volta ciò che ha detto. | 14 For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. |
| 15 Nei sogni, nelle visioni notturne, quando il sonno discende sopra gli uomini ed essi dormono nel loro letto, | 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while they slumber on their beds, |
| 16 allora egli apre agli uomini le orecchie, li istruisce e insegna loro la scienza, | 16 then he opens the ears of men, and terrifies them with warnings, |
| 17 per distogliere l'uomo da quello che fa e liberarlo dalla superbia, | 17 that he may turn man aside from his deed, and cut off pride from man; |
| 18 per salvare la sua anima dalla corruzione e la sua vita dalla spada. | 18 he keeps back his soul from the Pit, his life from perishing by the sword. |
| 19 Lo riprende pure per mezzo del dolore sul suo letto, e fa imputridire tutte le sue ossa. | 19 "Man is also chastened with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones; |
| 20 In questo stato egli ha in orrore il pane, e l'anima sua anche il cibo prima tanto desiderato. | 20 so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite dainty food. |
| 21 La sua carne si va consumando e le ossa, prima coperte, appaion nude. | 21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and his bones which were not seen stick out. |
| 22 La sua anima si avvicina alla corruzione, e la sua vita agli apportatori della morte. | 22 His soul draws near the Pit, and his life to those who bring death. |
| 23 Se parlerà in suo favore un angelo, uno delle migliaia destinati ad annunziare all'uomo il dovere, | 23 If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him; |
| 24 Egli ne avrà pietà e dirà: Liberalo, affinchè non scenda nella corruzione: ho trovato motivi d'essergli propizio: | 24 and he is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down into the Pit, I have found a ransom; |
| 25 sia sua carne è stata consunta dai supplizi: si torni ai giorni della sua giovinezza. | 25 let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor'; |
| 26 Egli pregherà Dio, e Dio gli sarà propizio; egli vedrà con gioia la sua faccia, e Dio renderà all'uomo la sua giustizia: | 26 then man prays to God, and he accepts him, he comes into his presence with joy. He recounts to men his salvation, |
| 27 egli si volgerà agli uomini e dirà: Peccai, veramente mancai, e non sono stato punito secondo il mio merito. | 27 and he sings before men, and says: 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, and it was not requited to me. |
| 28 È libererà l'anima sua dal cader nella morte, per vivere e vedere la luce. | 28 He has redeemed my soul from going down into the Pit, and my life shall see the light.' |
| 29 Ecco, Dio fa tutte queste cose per tre volte con ciascuno, | 29 "Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, |
| 30 affine di richiamare le anime degli uomini dalla corruzione e irraggiarle colla luce dei viventi. | 30 to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may see the light of life. |
| 31 Sta' attento, o Giobbe, sfammi a sentire, e taci mentre io parlo. | 31 Give heed, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. |
| 32 Se poi hai qualche cosa da dire, rispondimi e parla, perchè io voglio che tu comparisca giusto. | 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. |
| 33 Ma se non hai nulla, ascoltami, e taci; chè io t'insegnerò la sapienza ». | 33 If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom." |
