| 2 Il nostro retaggio è passato ai forestieri, le nostre abitazioni agli estranei. | 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to aliens. |
| 3 Noi siam restati come orfani senza padre, le nostre mani come vedove. | 3 We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. |
| 4 Per denaro abbiam bevuto la nostr'acqua, le nostre legna a prezzo abbiam comprate. | 4 We must pay for the water we drink, the wood we get must be bought. |
| 5 Fummo trascinati pel collo, senza che agli sfiniti fosse data requie. | 5 With a yoke on our necks we are hard driven; we are weary, we are given no rest. |
| 6 All'Egitto abbiam porto le mani ed agli Assiri, per aver pane da campare. | 6 We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough. |
| 7 I padri nostri hanno peccato e più non sonoe noi abbiam portato le loro iniquità. | 7 Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities. |
| 8 I mercenari hanno spadroneggiato su di noi, senza che alcuno ci riscattasse dalle loro mani. | 8 Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand. |
| 9 A rischio della vita ci siam procacciato il pane in faccia alla spada nel deserto. | 9 We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. |
| 10 La nostra pelle è risecchita come un forno, davanti all'imperversare della fame. | 10 Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine. |
| 11 Hanno disonorato le donne in Sion, e le vergini nelle città di Giuda. | 11 Women are ravished in Zion, virgins in the towns of Judah. |
| 12 I principi furono appesi per le mani, e non ebbero riverenza alla faccia dei vecchi. | 12 Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. |
| 13 Dei giovanetti abusarono impudicamente, e i ragazzi soccombettero sotto al bastone. | 13 Young men are compelled to grind at the mill; and boys stagger under loads of wood. |
| 14 Gli anziani sparirono dalle porte, e i giovani dai cori festeggianti. | 14 The old men have quit the city gate, the young men their music. |
| 15 È cessata la gioia del nostro cuore, il nostro canto s'è voltato in lamento. | 15 The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning. |
| 16 Il diadema del nostro capo è caduto, sciagurati noi, che abbiamo peccato! | 16 The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! |
| 17 Per questo è contristato il nostro cuore, per questo sono spente le pupille dei nostri occhi: | 17 For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim, |
| 18 pel monte Sion che fu devastato, le volpi transitarono per esso. | 18 for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it. |
| 19 Ma tu, Signore, resterai in eterno, il tuo soglio pel volgere di tutte le generazioni. | 19 But thou, O LORD, dost reign for ever; thy throne endures to all generations. |
| 20 Perchè ti avrai da scordare per sempre di noi, lasciandoci abbandonati per lunga età? | 20 Why dost thou forget us for ever, why dost thou so long forsake us? |
| 21 Convertici a te, Signore, e ritorneremo, ripristina i nostri giorni come da principio, | 21 Restore us to thyself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old! |
| 22 Ma per ora ci hai reietti e discacciati, ti sei fortemente adirato contro di noi.» | 22 Or hast thou utterly rejected us? Art thou exceedingly angry with us? |
