| 1 Guai a te, che saccheggi: non sarai tu pur saccheggiato? E a te, che disprezzi, non sarai tu pur disprezzato? Quando avrai finito di saccheggiare, sarai tu saccheggiato: allorché stanco finirai di disprezzare, sarai disprezzato. | 1 Woe to you, destroyer, who yourself have not been destroyed; you treacherous one, with whom none has dealt treacherously! When you have ceased to destroy, you will be destroyed; and when you have made an end of dealing treacherously, you will be dealt with treacherously. |
| 2 Signore abbi pietà di noi; perocché te noi abbiamo aspettato: sii tu nostra fortezza al mattino, e nostra salute al tempo della tribolazione. | 2 O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for thee. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble. |
| 3 Alla voce dell'Angelo fuggirono i popoli; e alzandoti tu le nazioni furon disperse. | 3 At the thunderous noise peoples flee, at the lifting up of thyself nations are scattered; |
| 4 E le vostre spoglie saranno raccolte, come si raccolgono i bruci, quando di essi s'empion le fosse. | 4 and spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; as locusts leap, men leap upon it. |
| 5 E' stato glorificato il Signore, che abita nell'alto: ha ripiena Sionne di equità, e di giustizia. | 5 The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness; |
| 6 E regnerà ne' tuoi tempi la fede: la sapienza, e la scienza son sue ricchezze salutari: e il timor del Signore il suo proprio tesoro. | 6 and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is his treasure. |
| 7 Ecco che que' di fuori in veggendo alzeranno le strida, i nunzj di pace piangeranno amaramente. | 7 Behold, the valiant ones cry without; the envoys of peace weep bitterly. |
| 8 Le strade sono deserte, nissuno più passa pe' sentieri, è rotto il patto; egli a gettate a terra le città; non fa conto degli uomini. | 8 The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceases. Covenants are broken, witnesses are despised, there is no regard for man. |
| 9 La terra è in pianto, ed in abbattimento: il Libano è disonorato, e negletto: il Saron è cangiato in deserto: Basan, ed il Carmelo sono spogliati. | 9 The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is confounded and withers away; Sharon is like a desert; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves. |
| 10 Adesso mi alzerò io, dice il Signore: adesso sarò io esaltato, adesso sarò glorificato. | 10 "Now I will arise," says the LORD, "now I will lift myself up; now I will be exalted. |
| 11 Concepirete focosi disegni, il parto sarà di stoppie: il vostro spirito stesso qual fuoco vi divorerà. | 11 You conceive chaff, you bring forth stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you. |
| 12 E saran questi popoli come la cenere, che rimane dopo un incendio,come fascio di spine saranno arsi dal fuoco. | 12 And the peoples will be as if burned to lime, like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire." |
| 13 Udite voi, che siete lontani, le cose, che io ho fatte, e voi vicini imparate a conoscer la mia possanza. | 13 Hear, you who are far off, what I have done; and you who are near, acknowledge my might. |
| 14 Si sono atterriti in Sionne i peccatori, la paura è entrata addosso agl'ipocriti. Chi di voi potrà abitare con un fuoco divoratore? Chi di voi abiterà tragli ardori sempiterni? | 14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: "Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?" |
| 15 Colui, che cammina nella giustizia, ed è verace nel suo parlare, e abborrisce gli acquisti della calunnia, e dalle sue mani rigetta ogni donativo, e le orecchie si tura, per non ascoltare il sangue, e serra i suoi occhi per non vedere il male. | 15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil, |
| 16 Questi abiterà in luogo altissimo, la sua elevazione sarà sopra una rocca di vivo sasso: è dato a lui il suo pane, le sue acque non mancano giammai. | 16 he will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him, his water will be sure. |
| 17 Gli occhi di lui vedranno il Re nella sua gloria, mireranno da lungi la terra. | 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty; they will behold a land that stretches afar. |
| 18 Il tuo cuore ripenserà a' suoi timori: Dov' è l'uomo di lettere? Dove colui, che pesa le parole della legge? Dove il maestro de' piccoli? | 18 Your mind will muse on the terror: "Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed the tribute? Where is he who counted the towers?" |
| 19 Tu non vedrai un popolo senza verecondia, un popolo di linguaggio oscuro, di cui tu non possi intendere i gerghi di sua lingua, ed il quale è privo di ogni saggezza. | 19 You will see no more the insolent people, the people of an obscure speech which you cannot comprehend, stammering in a tongue which you cannot understand. |
| 20 Volgi lo sguardo a Sionne, città dove celebrasi la nostra solennità: gli occhi tuoi vedranno Gerusalemme, mansione di dovizia, padiglione, cui non potrà farsi cambiar di sito: i suoi chiodi non saranno smossi in eterno, e nissuna' delle sue corde si romperà; | 20 Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be plucked up, nor will any of its cords be broken. |
| 21 Perocché ivi solamente e magnifico il Signore nostro: il letto de' fiumi suoi sarà canale larghissimo, e spazioso: non passerà per esso nave a remi, né alcuna grande trieride lo valicherà. | 21 But there the LORD in majesty will be for us a place of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars can go, nor stately ship can pass. |
| 22 Imperocché il Signore è nostro giudice, il Signore nostro legislatore, il Signore nostro Re: egli ci salverà. | 22 For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our ruler, the LORD is our king; he will save us. |
| 23 Si son allentati i tuoi cordami, e non reggeranno: il tuo albero sarà in tale stato, che non potrai spiegarvi lo stendardo. Allora si stribuiranno le spoglie, e le prede copiose: gli zoppi anderanno a far bottino. | 23 Your tackle hangs loose; it cannot hold the mast firm in its place, or keep the sail spread out. Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided; even the lame will take the prey. |
| 24 E il vicino non dirà: io son fiacco: il popolo, che ivi abiterà, sarà sciolto dalla sua iniquità. | 24 And no inhabitant will say, "I am sick"; the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity. |
