| 1 Di che priego voi, [io] che son ligato nel Signore, che degnamente andiate nella vocazione, nella qual siete chiamati, | 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, |
| 2 con ogni umilità e mansuetudine, con pazienza, sopportando (e sostenendo) l' uno l'altro con carità, | 2 with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, |
| 3 essendo solliciti di servare l'unità del Spirito con legame di pace. | 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. |
| 4 E siate uno corpo e uno spirito, sì come siete chiamati in una speranza della vostra vocazione. | 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, |
| 5 (Imperò che) uno è il Signore, una è la fede e uno è battesimo. | 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, |
| 6 E uno è Dio; padre di tutti è sopra tutte le cose, e in tutte le cose. | 6 one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. |
| 7 A ciascuno di noi è data grazia, secondo la misura del donamento di Cristo. | 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. |
| 8 Per la qual cosa dice (la scrittura: Cristo) salendo in alto, menò seco coloro ch' erano in cattività presi (cioè tenuti in inferno), e dètte doni alli uomini. | 8 Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." |
| 9 Ma ch' egli salì, che altro è, se non che egli discese in prima alle più basse parti della terra? | 9 (In saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? |
| 10 Quello discese; quello medesimo salìe sopra tutti li cieli, per adempiere tutte le cose. | 10 He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) |
| 11 Elli certamente dètte alquanti che fossero profeti, e alquanti che fossero apostoli, e altri che fossero evangelisti, e altri pastori e dottori, | 11 And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, |
| 12 a compimento de' santi, e per adoperare il (servizio e il) ministerio in edificazione del corpo di Cristo, | 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, |
| 13 insino a tanto che noi [tutti] siamo in unità della fede, e nella cognizione del Figliuolo di Dio corriamo a essere uomo compiuto, e in misura dell' etate e della plenitudine (e del compimento del tempo) di Cristo; | 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; |
| 14 perchè non siamo già piccolini tempestosi, e che non siamo portati dintorno da ogni vento di dottrina con nequizia di uomini, e con ingegni a inganno di errore. | 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. |
| 15 Ma facendo verità, cresciamo in carità per tutte le cose in quel ch' è capo, cioè Cristo. | 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, |
| 16 Dal qual tutto il corpo è congiunto e legato insieme per ogni giuntura dell' aministrazione, ciascuno membro secondo la misura, il quale fa accrescimento del corpo a edificazione in carità. | 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love. |
| 17 E questo dico e testimonio nel Signore, che voi non [andiate] da ora inanzi sì come l'altre genti, che vanno per la vanità del senno loro. | 17 Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; |
| 18 Le quali hanno oscurato l' intendimento, e son alienate della via di Dio, [per l' ignoranza] la qual è in coloro, e per la cecità del loro cuore. | 18 they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart; |
| 19 Li quali, disperandosi, diedono sè medesimi alla sozzura, nella operazione di ogni immundizia, e all' avarizia. | 19 they have become callous and have given themselves up to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of uncleanness. |
| 20 Ma voi non imparaste così Cristo, | 20 You did not so learn Christ!-- |
| 21 se così è che voi udiste lui, e in lui siete ammaestrati, sì come egli è la verità in Iesù, | 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus. |
| 22 di partire voi della prima conversazione, quando vi corrompevate secondo li desiderii dell' errore. | 22 Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, |
| 23 Adunque rinnovatevi del spirito della vostra mente. | 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, |
| 24 E vestitevi di nuovo uomo, il quale è creato secondo Dio in giustizia e in santità di verità. | 24 and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. |
| 25 Per la qual cosa abbandonando la bugia, parlate la verità ciascuno con il prossimo suo; però che noi siamo insieme membra. | 25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, let every one speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. |
| 26 Adiratevi, e non vogliate peccare; il sole non si corichi sopra la vostra ira. | 26 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, |
| 27 Non date luogo al diavolo. | 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. |
| 28 Quel che furava, non furi più; anzi lavori colle sue mani quella cosa che sia buona, che abbia che possa dare a coloro che patiscono necessità. | 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need. |
| 29 E niuna parola [ria] esca della vostra bocca; anzi n' esca quella che sia buona a edificazione della fede, che dia grazia a loro che odono. | 29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear. |
| 30 E non vogliate contristare il Spirito Santo di Dio, nel quale siete segnati per il dì della redenzione. | 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. |
| 31 Ogni amaritudine e ogni ira e isdegno e grido e biastema sia cessata da voi con ogni malizia. | 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, with all malice, |
| 32 Siate insieme benigni e misericordevoli, perdonando uno all' altro insieme, sì come Dio perdonò a noi in Cristo. | 32 and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. |
