1 E lo principe de' sacerdoti lo domandò e disse: or son vere queste cose, (che questi dicono)?	1 Then the high priest said: Are these things so?
2 Allora (Santo Stefano rispose per scusarsi e per mostrare la falsità loro, cioè de' testimonii, e) disse fratelli miei, uditemi; (io dissi e dico ancora che) i glorioso nostro Signore Dio apparve (an'icamente) al nostro padre Abraam, quando era in Mesopotamia, inanzi ch' egli venisse ad abitare in Caran.	2 Who said: Ye men, brethren, and fathers, hear. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charan.
3 E disseli: esci fuori della terra tua e del parentato tuo, e vieni abitare in quella terra che io ti mostrarò.	3 And said to him: Go forth out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
4 Allora Abraam si partì di Caldea, e venne ad abitare in Caran; ma poi che fu morto il suo padre (Tare, Dio) il fece venire (in queste contrade, e) in questa terra in la quale voi abitate.	4 Then he went out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charan. And from thence, after his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein you now dwell.
5 E non gli diede pur uno passo di terra per eredità; ma impromiseli di darla in possessione [a lui, e] al seme suo dopo lui, non avendo egli ancora figliuolo.	5 And he gave him no inheritance in it; no, not the pace of a foot: but he promised to give it him in possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
6 E disseli, che il seme suo (cioè li figliuoli) sarebbe pellegrino in terra straniera, e sarebbeno soggetti in servitù, e male li trattarebbero per spazio di CCCC anni.	6 And God said to him: That his seed should sojourn in a strange country, and that they should bring them under bondage, and treat them evil four hundred years.
7 Ma poi disse che farebbe vendetta di quella gente, alla quale dovevano servire (ed essere da loro afflitti); e poi uscirebbeno (di quella terra e di quella servitù con molta ricchezza) e servirebbeno pur a lui in questo luogo.	7 And the nation which they shall serve will I judge, said the Lord; and after these things they shall go out, and shall serve me in this place.
8 E dietteli poi il testamento della circoncisione; e generò Isaac, e circonciselo l'ottavo dì; e così poi Isaac generò Iacob; e Iacob, li XII patriarchi (suoi fratelli).	8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob; and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
9 E li patriarchi, invidiando Iosef, il venderono in Egitto; ma Dio fu con lui.	9 And the patriarchs, through envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; and God was with him,
10 E liberollo di tutte le sue tribulazioni, e dielli sapienza e grazia nel conspetto di Faraone, re d' Egitto, e sopra tutta la sua casa.	10 And delivered him out of all his tribulations: and he gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharao, the king of Egypt; and he appointed him governor over Egypt, and over all his house.
11 E venendo poi la fame (e la carestia grande) per tutte le contrade d' Egitto e di Canaan, non trovavano li nostri padri che mangiare (nè di che vivere).	11 Now there came a famine upon all Egypt and Chanaan, and great tribulation; and our fathers found no food.
12 E udendo Iacob, che in Egitto si vendeva del grano, mandò li figliuoli a comprarne due volte.	12 But when Jacob had heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent our fathers first:
13 Ma nella seconda volta Iosef ( ch' era quivi signore) si fece conoscere alli fratelli; per questo modo fu manifesta la generazione di Iosef a Faraone.	13 And at the second time, Joseph was known by his brethren, and his kindred was made known to Pharao.
14 E Iosef mandò per Iacob suo padre, e per tutto il parentado suo, che furono per numero LXXV persone.	14 And Joseph sending, called thither Jacob, his father, and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.
15 E quivi discese Iacob, e morì esso e li nostri padri.	15 So Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died, and our fathers.
16 Pognamo che fussero poi translati in Sichem, e posti nel sepolcro, il quale comperò Abraam per prezzo d'argento dalli figliuoli di Emor figliuolo di Sichem.	16 And they were translated into Sichem, and were laid in the sepulchre, that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Hemor, the son of Sichem.
17 Ma approssimandosi il tempo il quale Dio aveva promesso ad Abraam, crebbe il popolo d' Israel nell' Egitto, e moltiplicò molto.	17 And when the time of the promise drew near, which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased, and were multiplied in Egypt,
18 E succedendo (dopo molto tempo) un altro re in Egitto, il quale non sapea chi si fosse Iosef,	18 Till another king arose in Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
19 studiossi (d' opprimere e) d'affliggere li nostri antichi (e la nostra gente), e comandò che uccidessero tutti li fanciulli che nascessono.	19 This same dealing craftily with our race, afflicted our fathers, that they should expose their children, to the end they might not be kept alive.
20 E in quello tempo nacque Moisè, e fu accetto a Dio; e fu nutricato (secretamente) per spazio di tre mesi nella casa del suo padre.	20 At the same time was Moses born, and he was acceptable to God: who was nourished three months in his father's house.
21 E poi (che non si potè più celare) fu gittato al fiume; e la figliuola di Faraone lo trovò, e fecelo nutricare, e adottosselo per figliuolo.	21 And when he was exposed, Pharao's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22 E fecelo ammaestrare della scienza (della lingua) dello Egitto, sì che diventò potente (e famoso) in favellare e in opere.	22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians; and he was mighty in his words and in his deeds.
23 E pervenuto che fu a età di quaranta anni, venneli in cuore di visitare i suoi fratelli (giudei) figliuoli d'Israel.	23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.
24 E (in quelle contrade dove elli abitavano andò, e) trovò che uno giudeo riceveva ingiuria da uno d'Egitto; onde (acceso di grande zelo) uccise quello di Egitto.	24 And when he had seen one of them suffer wrong, he defended him; and striking the Egyptian, he avenged him who suffered the injury.
25 E per questo credeite dare a intendere alli suoi fratelli (giudei), che Dio per lui li salvarebbe (e liberarebbe di quella servitù); ma elli ciò non intesero.	25 And he thought that his brethren understood that God by his hand would save them; but they understood it not.
26 E il seguente dì, trovando due giudei accapigliati insieme, procurava di riducerli in pace, e diceva loro pensate che siete fratelli; perchè adunque (vi offendete insieme, e) nocete l' uno all' altro?	26 And the day following, he shewed himself to them when they were at strife; and would have reconciled them in peace, saying: Men, ye are brethren; why hurt you one another?
27 Allora quello, che faceva ingiuria all' altro, rispose minacciandolo, e disse: or chi t' ha fatto principe e giudice sopra di noi?	27 But he that did the injury to his neighbour thrust him away, saying: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge over us?
28 Voimi tu uccidere, come uccidesti ieri quello d'Egitto?	28 What, wilt thou kill me, as thou didst yesterday kill the Egyptian?
29 La quale parola udendo, Moisè (temette molto, vedendosi pubblicato; e) fuggì nelle contrade di Madiam, e quivi, fatto forestiero, (prese mogliere, e) generò due figliuoli.	29 And Moses fled upon this word, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begot two sons.
30 E stato che fu in quelle contrade anni XL, gli apparve Dio nel deserto del monte Sina in fiamma di fuoco nel rubo.	30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the desert of mount Sina, an angel in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 E vedendolo egli (ardere e non consumare) maravigliavasi molto; e accostandosi per vedere meglio, udì una voce (uscire di quello rubo) che (ardeva, e) disse:	31 And Moses seeing it, wondered at the sight. And as he drew near to view it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying:
32 Io sono il Dio de' vostri padri, Dio di Abraam, Dio di Isaac e Dio di Iacob. Onde Moisè, molto stupefatto, non s' ardi d' accostarsi.	32 I am the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses being terrified, durst not behold.
33 Allora li disse Dio (in quella voce): sciogli li calzamenti delli tuoi piedi, perciò che il luogo nel quale tu stai è terra santa.	33 And the Lord said to him: Loose the shoes from thy feet, for the place wherein thou standest, is holy ground.
34 (Sappi che io) ho veduto l' afflizione del popolo mio il quale è in Egitto, e ho udito il loro pianto, e sono sceso per liberarli; vieni adunque, che io ti voglio mandare in Egitto.	34 Seeing I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, and I will send thee into Egypt.
35 Questo Moisè, il quale (quelli giudei, come detto è di sopra) reprobarono dicendo: or chi ? ha fatto giudice sopra di noi? Dio il fece principe e redentore del suo popolo, e apparveli nel rubo (nel deserto, come detto è).	35 This Moses, whom they refused, saying: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge? him God sent to be prince and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36 E trasse il popolo suo (d' Egitto, della servitù di Faraone), facendo segni e (molte) maraviglie nell'Egitto, e nel mare rosso, e nel deserto per spazio di XL anni.	36 He brought them out, doing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the desert forty years.
37 Questo è quello Moisè, il quale (come detto è di sopra) disse alli figliuoli d' Israel: Dio vi mandarà uno profeta de' vostri fratelli; udirete lui, come fate me.	37 This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel: A prophet shall God raise up to you of your own brethren, as myself: him shall you hear.
38 Questi fu..... nella solitudine con l'angelo, il quale gli apparve nel monte Sina, e ricevette le parole della vita (cioè la legge santa), e diella (e predicolla) al popolo da parte di Dio.	38 This is he that was in the church in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on mount Sina, and with our fathers; who received the words of life to give unto us.
39 Ma non gli volseno obbedire li nostri padri; anzi lo reprovarono, e di cuore (si rivolsero contra a lui, e) tornorono in Egitto (col desiderio),	39 Whom our fathers would not obey; but thrust him away, and in their hearts turned back into Egypt,
40 dicendo ad Aaron: fa a noi li dii li quali ci vadano inanzi; però che non sappiamo che si sia di questo Moisè il quale ci trasse d'Egitto.	40 Saying to Aaron: Make us gods to go before us. For as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
41 E così feciono uno vitello (d' oro conflatile) al quale feciono sacrificio, e ballaronli e inginocchiaronsi inanzi.	41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Onde Dio (turbato) li lasciò accecare del cuore, sì che servirono (e feciono sacrificio agli idoli e) alla milizia del cielo (cioè al sole e alla luna e alle stelle), come di ciò parla Dio, e lamentasi per la bocca di diversi profeti, dicendo: avetemi voi offerte vittime e ostie, quaranta anni nel deserto, o casa d' Israel?	42 And God turned, and gave them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the books of the prophets: Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years, in the desert, O house of Israel?
43 E avete fatto il tabernacolo di Moloc, e la stella del vostro Dio Remfain; .... e (per questo peccato massimamente dice che Dio li traslatò in Babilonia, (cioè permise che fussono menati pregioni in servitudine del re di Babilonia).	43 And you took unto you the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Rempham, figures which you made to adore them. And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 (E sapete che) Dio fece fare a Moisè lo tabernacolo del testimonio nel deserto con li nostri padri, e disseli che il facesse secondo la forma la quale gli aveva monstrata, (quando stette in contemplazione in sul monte Sina a ricevere la legge).	44 The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the desert, as God ordained for them, speaking to Moses, that he should make it according to the form which he had seen.
45 E poi li nostri (antichi) padri (li quali dopo succedettero) lo recarono in queste contrade nelle quali abitavano genti pagane, le quali Dio (esterminò e) cacciò dalla faccia loro, (e durò) insino alli tempi di David.	45 Which also our fathers receiving, brought in with Jesus, into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David.
46 Il quale trovò grazia appo Iddio, e domandò di trovare il tabernacolo a Dio di Iacob.	46 Who found grace before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 E poi Salomone (suo figliuolo) edificò a Dio il tempio.	47 But Solomon built him a house.
48 Non che Dio (eccelso) abiti in luogo fatto con mano, come elli mostra per il profeta, quando dice:	48 Yet the most High dwelleth not in houses made by hands, as the prophet saith:
49 il cielo è mia sedia, e la terra è scabello delli miei piedi. Che casa adunque a me edificarete? O che luogo mi farete per riposare? dice Iddio.	49 Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool. What house will you build me? saith the Lord; or what is the place of my resting?
50 Or non ha fatto la mia mano tutte queste cose?	50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
51 (E poi che per lo predetto modo Stefano s' ebbe scusato, e mostrato ch' egli aveva reverenza a Dio e a Moisè e al tabernacolo e al tempio, sì che concludeva che li testimonii erano falsi, sì gli cominciò a riprendere per grande zelo, e disse:) o uomini di dura cervice, con cuore e orecchi non circoncisi (e immondi), voi sempre avete contrastato al Spirito Santo, come feciono ancora li vostri (antichi) padri.	51 You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you also.
52 Quale profeta campò, che li vostri padri non perseguitasseno? (Anzi sappiate ch' ) elli uccisono quelli li quali profetavano dell' avvenimento di Cristo, il quale voi traditori e omicidiali uccideste.	52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them who foretold of the coming of the Just One; of whom you have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53 E così (prima) receveste la legge in disposizione delli angeli, e non la voleste osservare.	53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54 Le quali parole quelli udendo, tutti si rodeano di cuore, e stridevano colli denti in contra di lui.	54 Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him.
55 Ed essendo (Stefano) pieno di Spirito Santo, (intendendo e) risguardando in cielo, vide la gloria di Dio, e Iesù stare dalla sua mano diritta; e (per grande fervore incominciò a gridare, e) disse: ecco che io veggo li cieli aperti, e il Figliuolo dell' uomo (cioè Cristo) stare alla mano diritta (della virtù) di Dio.	55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
56 La quale parola li giudei udendo, (e riputandola blasfemia), sì gridarono contra a lui, e turaronsi le orecchie, e con impeto li corsono addosso (con le pietre).	56 And they crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him.
57 E cacciandolo fuori della città, sì lo lapidavano; e li (predetti falsi) testimonii poseno le loro vestimenta a piedi d'uno giovene che avea nome Saulo.	57 And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul.
58 E lapidavano Stefano, chiamante e dicente: Signore (mio) Iesù, ricevi il spirito mio.	58 And they stoned Stephen, invoking, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
59 E inginocchiandosi, gridò (e orò) con grande voce, e disse: pregoti, Signore, che tu non reputi loro questa mia morte a peccato, (però che non sanno quello che si fanno). E dette queste parole, rendette i spirito a Dio. E Saulo (come detto è, guardava le vestimenta delli lapidatori, ed) era consenziente a questa morte.	59 And falling on his knees, he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord. And Saul was consenting to his death.
